I rewatched the History of the NY Knicks video from 1989 (on YouTube - my VHS copy is in a box somewhere). My favorite part is the montage showing each core player’s journey to the Garden - Willis, Dick Barnett, Cazzie, Clyde and Bill Bradley. And Red takes over as coach. Then the music changes to snares and GM Eddie Donovan’s trade to get Dave DeBusschere pops up and then everything comes together. Those images used to haunt me, because I thought they were the closest thing to a title that I would ever experience. I was born a year too late. Now, what Leon Rose did can sit alongside that old montage. He built this team in the same methodical fashion and found the right coach when he needed to. I am still in shock.
