WAR didn’t exist (I don’t think) back when I last followed the sport. Does Ohtani’s WAR include his pitching production? Since nobody else does what he does is he even scored on the same scale, or does he get Simone Biles treatment?

No, he ranked 8th out of all players at all positions in MLB. Not 8th out of all catchers. Top 10 defensive player in all of baseball. Had the 8th highest defensive WAR out of any baseball player. He ranked second among catchers behind Alejandro Kirk.

Kirk was a top 30 position player in baseball despite relatively pedestrian batting stats, that’s how impactful catcher defense is.

Elite catcher defense is worth a lot of runs.

I’m not sure how being 8th in a 30 team league qualifies as elite. You must be used to grading on a curve.

Judge lead the league in walks and runs scored. Also set the AL record for most IBB in a season.

Thanks BPL. I have noticed that Judge walks a lot (not surprisingly teams avoid pitching to him), and it’s definitely a good thing. I don’t know the numbers but I expect he scores a lot of runs too because he’s on base so much.

Malcolm Brogdon talking like he expects to make the roster and play a role. My thing is, if his body is right, he’s the best backup PG on the roster by a wide margin.

If Brogdon is healthy, and unless we get something unexpectedly good for Kolek (e.g. a decent future second round pick), I would keep Kolek and ditch Shamet and all the other vets’ minimum scrubs. Brogdon is a very good player. If he’s healthy.

I know people have said differently but my understanding was that Raleigh’s defensive numbers were down quite a bit this year from last years elite levels. Still excellent but not otherworldly

Raleigh won the Platinum Glove in 2024, which is the award given to the best defensive player in all of MLB. And he deserved it. Led MLB in defensive WAR that year.

He wasn’t quite as good this year, but was still 8th in MLB in defensive WAR. This is how he gets close to Judge in overall WAR despite the 45 point gap in wRC+.

Elite catcher defense is worth a lot of runs.

Its actuality .458/.691! Judge’s OBP/SLG. Raleigh’s is .201 lower.

Not to worry. As much as I liked Dart’s debut, if Dabol keeps using him as the illegitimate love child of Charley Tolar and Tom Rathman, he’ll have PTSD before the bye week. He took some beating today and not the fault of the pass rush.
