Worried it’s going to be OJ Anderson, three yards and a cloud of dust style….

And I don’t mean just outfielders, but cut-off men too. If a second baseman or shortstop can throw accurately to first base, why can’t he throw home accurately?

Purely anecdotal, but as a 8 time slow-pitch softball champion, I can say relay throws to home are harder because home plate is behind you on a relay. When you field a grounder, you’re just turning a few degrees to your left to throw. Even a grounder to your right, it’s not a big angle.

But when you’re running out towards the OF for a relay, even if you catch it on the side, your head is making a (somewhat) 180 degree pivot. You’re also less sure of your place on the field. When you get a grounder hit to you, you could probably close your eyes and point to first pretty accurately based on how many steps you had to take in X direction.

That said I had a pretty good record throwing people out at the plate, both as an OF and a relay thrower. Pretty much because it was more important at the level I played at to make an accurate throw than a strong one. I’m guessing MLB isn’t as lenient.

Of course you prefer to have outfielders with strong arms, and they’re still out there— Pete Crow-Armstrong, Ronald Acuna, Oneil Cruz, and others. But overall the big booming throw from the outfield has been in decline for a while now.
