Now, I’d be interested to hear a record they could make with some top notch singers and songwriters involved, but that’s not really what they do.

Yeah, exactly. That is where I expected them to go after seeing them balling out with no real singers or songs. They were like Pirandello's six characters in search of an author. But, yeah, I guess “radio single” just isn’t what they are looking for. Still, I thought I was looking at the future of my musical interests, and now I don’t really think of them much at all.

I'm not going back to the US Open because I've only been once and we got incredibly lucky.

A friend invited my wife and me for a weekday night, main court, Ashe stadium. And you never know what you're going to see.

So we got to see the final meeting of Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras. It was a duel for the ages, nobody broke serve, and it went until about 1 or 2am.

Epic and wonderful and I'm SO GLAD we didn't sign Ben Simmons.

In general the best music these days is far removed from the mainstream. Occasionally you'll hear an interesting song or artist break through, but most of what makes it into mainstream culture is complete garbage. I'm looking at the top 100 singles chart right now and YIKES. There are like six Morgan Wallen songs in the top 20 and another 5-6 rather dire K-pop songs. Not good times on the pop charts.

Most of the best music that gets made today either gets sent to the indie rock hinterlands or gets branded as "Americana" and doesn't make it onto mainstream country playlists. I have enjoyed this year's albums by Big Thief, FKA Twigs, Panda Bear, Jason Isbell, Ichiko Aoba, Turnstile, and Alex G off the top of my head, and the Pulp and Stereolab albums are both strong comeback efforts from legacy 90's bands. I could think of more.

There were plenty of good records that came out last year too, but same thing. Very few that made even a tiny dent in the mainstream.

Vulfpeck isn't really a "songwriting" kind of act. Their calling card is their incredible ensemble playing. They're like a jam band but with a stratospheric level of musicianship that blows the doors off of pretty much any crusty hippie jam band. They're also not really interested in making albums. YouTube is their platform, and they've ridden that to some pretty insane heights-- sold out MSG with no record label and no management.

Now, I'd be interested to hear a record they could make with some top notch singers and songwriters involved, but that's not really what they do.

I saw Wulfpeck at a small club in LA, like, 10 years ago, and thought “wow, what a great bunch if young musicians, it’s going to be amazing when they write a good song.” Then the song never came and I lost track of them.

Kind of the same with Alabama Shakes, though I saw them at a bigger venue and they already had a good album. But I feel that they haven’t produced at their ceiling either.

So I agree with Ess. But I am also Ess’s age and never cared for pop music much even when I was young. I like Lionel Ritchie a lot more now than I did then.

Cypress Hill are probably great live, the venue doesn't matter much. ;) I'm from a time when around here we had concerts in high schools, so the bands performed there to rebel against the system while... in the system. It was funny! :)

I have the same problem with time, Geo, it seems like time is always faster than me. LOL

I thought the Jets and Fields in particular looked very good yesterday. IMO they were the better team.
