Also yes to Simmons on a vet min. He’s got as much upside as anyone you can get in the vet min for a 14th man. And as high a floor — defensive specialist minutes eater.

I don’t mean to suggest any member of our SL roster may not be useful in a future year, Rama, just in this year’s playoffs.

This last vet min we sign is going to our 10th man, not our 14th.

While I understand and somewhat agree with hubert’s point, my understanding is that if Kolek is indeed unplayable and not worth waiting on, his roster spot can be freed up via trade (might have to attach something) and another vet’s min guy can be brought in. Same with Simmons himself, doesn’t seem all that hard to dump a minimum salary on a team with cap space…or a need?

Hey, Huk is a legitimate third center (for what that’s worth). And Dadier isn’t likely to contribute much this year, but he’s not flotsam and jetsam. I think we’ll see him playing in 2026-27.

Kolek, yikes. One good half does not wipe away all those terrible passes and TOs, or the bad shooting. I’m fine calling him and the rest flotsam and jetsam, but only this year. Diawara could be something.

When my 14th man

We’re talking about our 10th man, though. We still only have 9 NBA players (one of whom is Jordan Clarkson) to go along with our summer league flotsam and jetsam. So there’s a good case to be made for higher floor, lower ceiling (like Shamet or Wright). Using our last chip on a guy whose mental health might not be an ideal fit for our current pressure cooker is a massive risk.

Somehow all those summer videos of Simmons shooting 3s had me thinking he occasionally took 3s in his early years but he’s attempted 36 3s in his career and none since February 2023. If we sign him the other guys should put a bunch of money in a pot that goes to the first of Mitch or Ben to make a 3

Yeah I was looking at his career trends expecting to see a major dropoff after the Atlanta series but he’s kinda always been like this.

The only cliff is in free throw rate, which makes sense since his entire mental issue is supposedly a fear of taking free throws.

For those on the negative side of the Simmons argument, here’s some ammo from the Clippers blogosphere.

One sentence in there made me a believer:

“Sadly, Ben’s trend line with the Clippers repeated itself in the playoffs. He gave the Clippers legitimately helpful minutes in the first three games, playing solid defense on Jokic, providing pace on offense, and assisting on the glass.”

When my 14th man/back up point/forward/center can play ‘solid defense’ on the best player in the game (Jokic), I’ll roll the dice if I get a chance.
