I know it’s the middle of the night gor most of you, but maybe you’ll read this in the morning. I looked at the sports news and, even though I am definitely not a Pacers fan, I think they’re getting a raw deal in the press. Look at the Athletic headline: “Tyrese Haliburton clutch shot sinks Thunder as Pacers steal NBA Finals Game 1”. The use of “steal” souls imply that something illegitimate happed, like a phantom foul or something. But nothing of the sort happened. The Pacers just won a close game. They also call the victory improbable in the text. I think this language reflects the writers judgement that OKC was a much better team that deserved to win (and, by extension, the East is such a lousy conference and its champion doesn’t deserve to win. For the honor of the Eastern conference I hope the Pacers prove that attitude wrong.

Why is everybody going crazy about Kidd?

Marc Stein reported the Knicks were interested in Kidd first, before Begley reported later in the day that the Knicks were interested in Udoka, Kidd, and Chris Finch.

The Sacramento Kings are beefing up their coaching staff. Mike Woodson is now associate head coach, reporting to head coach Doug Christie, and Mike Miller, our one time interim head coach, is now a King’s assistant coach. They also added an assistant coach who had been the head coach of Cleveland’s G league team. Scott Perry clearly values a deep and quality coaching staff. I’m not sure Knick’s management values that enough.

In the last 15 seconds of regulation in the NBA playoffs, shooters are 4-27 from the field. Tyrese Haliburton, however, is 5-5.

The thing about Haliburton’s “clutchness” is that the Pacers would probably still be in the finals even if he went 0-5. Two were in an elimination game 5, one was in a game 2 in a series they had already poached home court in, one was in game 1 of a series they proceeded to put away early. The Hali shots just made it all go faster.
