looks like you need to be a PBS donator to watch it now, but there was a great doc (Nebraska: A Celebration of Words and Music) featuring artists playing songs and Warren Zanes talking through his book: Deliver Me from Nowhere…PBS thing came out last august…

i wasn’t that much a fan at the time of Nebraska, seemed really dark to me…

i was young, forgivable error…

at one point i found the Outtakes from Nebraska and fell in love with Pink Cadillac…

for some reason reminds me of stevie ray vaughan’s: pride and joy…just a simple and perfectly constructed and played song…

there’s a version of Born in the USA on Nebraska…

The Jimmy Webb/Glen Campbell singles (Z-Man mentioned two of them) are great songs and great records. “Galveston” is another brilliant record. By the time of “Rhinestone Cowboy” his records had started to get pretty cheesy, but the Jimmy Webb-written ones are ace.

He was a top session player before he was a recording artist, one of the main guitarists in the Wrecking Crew. I was asked to join his touring band in the aughts, not long before his dementia got quite bad and he had to retire. If
I didn’t have other commitments I would have done it.

Born in the USA was one of my formative albums, but it’s actually super weird when you go back and listen to it. It’s kind of a synth-folk Lynchian collection of ballads and rockers. Utterly bizarre. Don’t listen to him much now, but I like Nebraska and The River most these days.

For a while my youngest daughter had a fixation with Kokomo by the Beach Boys. Love the band, hate the song. She still cues it up just to get a rise out of me.

No. It was Rhinestone Cowboy and Country Boy that she used to play A LOT. (I assume those were his “cross-over” songs. I don’t know the rest of his catalogue at all, except for Southern Nights which sounds like an outtake from Honkey Chateau).

Glen was (by my standards) a heck of a guitarist. None of those hits were reflective of that.

Funny how tastes differ. I like a decent amount of Springsteen stuff, but think Hungry Heart is pretty schlocky and never had much use for his dragged-out story songs from Born to Run. I actually like his ballads best, starting with Meeting Across the River. My favorite intro song to a movie ever is Streets of Philadelphia, the entire opening scene blew me away.

My 17 year old went through a Glen Campbell phase. She’d have her headphones on in the back and I’d see her smiling to herself and moving her lips quietly, and I’d say “are you listening to Rhinestone Cowboy again??” and she’d nod guiltily. I liked to imagine that of the 400,000,000 people in America, she was the only black teenaged girl listening to that song at that moment. I’m pretty sure she was.

But unlike Uptown Girl, Rhinestone Cowboy has a bit of charm to it, and I kind of liked it when she played it out loud.

Now all she listens to is Kendrick. I have to admit, I miss the Glen Campbell days…
