I was looking at minutes per game averages for our bench guys over their careers.

Precious last year averaged 24 minutes a game with us. Some of that was bc he started some games but this year so far he’s averaging only 14. Some of that could be because he was injured and Thibs wasn’t going to immediately play him 20 minutes the first game back. But before he was a knock he had seasons where he averaged 20 off the bench for Toronto. Now it’s 14.

Payne averaged like 18 last year for Philly and had 2 seasons with the subs where he averaged over 20. Right now it’s under 15.

Same with Shamet.

These are veteran players who have averaged 18 to 20 off the bench for good playoff caliber teams yet Thibs can’t be bothered to play them more than 14 a game?

It’s fucking ridiculous.

Long-term, I see only two viable alternatives: a) play KAT at the 4. or b) trade one of KAT or Brunson (obviously KAT.)

We knew we had two weak links on defense. The hope was we could make up for enough of it to still have a top 10 defense to go along with an elite offense, but right now it seems like we have more issues with the defense than just Brunson/Towns. It’s not OG and maybe not just the players. Some of this is on Thibs.

We suspected for awhile that Mitch’s return would answer some questions. Hopefully he’s only about 3-4 weeks away from a return. Then we’ll have the rest of the season to evaluate how the Towns/Mitch combo works. If we don’t like it, there could be a major shakeup.

My preference would be to try to find a 3&D+ PF that fits with Towns, with good length, that can help inside and keep the spacing. Then we move OG and Bridges down a slot and Hart to the bench.

I know. I know. It won’t be easy to find. But if Mitch looks good, even if the fit is not ideal here, his value will improve.

I don't know, ess-dog. Partly because I was convinced reading your post that you were talking about your daughter's coach (figured it out as I got further along because of big brain). But also no professional athlete, unless they're on their last legs, is okay with getting low playing time. I'm sure Sims and Payne are incorrectly thinking they deserve more (well maybe not Sims, partly because it's not clear what he's thinking, and maybe not Payne because after last night's game he'd be right!).

Anyway, you have to HAVE substitution patterns to have players be annoyed about them.
