If RJ is now being used as a replacement for a point guard on offense, I’m not surprised his efficiency is down. This is likely because he’s getting so many assists. He’s going to get a lot of defensive attention and could be looking to pass first and then to score if he can’t make a good pass. The quality of the shot opportunities will go down because there isn’t someone else creating opportunities for him and because he’ll have to try to get a shot off even if the other team’s defense is closing off opportunities.

RJ has been all over the place as a Raptor, just an odd duck of a player. Started off as an efficient off-ball player, playing lots of minutes at power forward. His average shot distance went way down, assisted baskets way up, efficiency way up.

Now he’s the dominant on-ball guy on the team, average shot distance is the highest of his career, his assisted basket percentage is back where it was in his Knick days, and his scoring efficiency is way down, back to Knick levels, but he’s had this huge spike in his assist rate. Tonight he had 15 assists and 1 turnover against the Celtics, but shot 10 for 27.

He’s a confounding player. The playmaking is impressive, but he’s got to be at like a 90 TS+ and eFG+ after this game. Right back to where he was in New York. Shrug emoticon.

The only thing i can think of is that because we only needed 2 pts DFS thought Brunson would try to penetrate to go for one of those typical pull-up jumpers he usually takes, and he was trying to be prepared for it. But he clearly gave him too much room for the 3P and when he reacted it was too late.
The crazy thing is that they just had success doubling Brunson for the last, like, five possessions, but they single cover him with the game on the line?!? What in the whaaaaaaaa!?
