There were ten of us in the synthesizer “section” but that was just a small part of the whole orchestra, which I’m sure was well over 100 people. We were seated directly in front of the French horn section, and there were like ten of them alone! There was a full string section, woodwinds, brass, percussion.

It was in a giant orchestra soundstage, the John Williams Music Building on the Sony lot in Culver City. Airplane hangar-sized room. The technical aspect of it alone was stunning. They had headphones for every member of the orchestra, so probably like 150 sets of headphones or more. Insane complicated microphone setup. Everybody is getting paid union scale and we went into overtime, so I can’t even imagine the expense that gets racked up doing a session like this. They rented probably like $300K worth of synthesizers. It was really an experience that I won’t forget.

wow, that sounds like industrial sized music…were you all playing at like the same time…

how many total folks, and how big an area did it take to fit everyone?

something like that must be intense to coordinate and make happen…

were there 10 total folks playing synthesizers?

that sounds incredible…wall of sound…

It was all new compositions although some of them did incorporate the iconic Axel F melody. I had never done one of those big orchestral soundstage sessions so it was a really cool experience.

JK- that is absolutely so cool! Beverly Hills cop is one of my favorite movies of the 80’s (im 48), and even my kids have heard Axel F. Can’t wait to see the new movie and hear your work. This blog is full of some cool dudes.
