We are not a contender right now (see Vegas, Las), and while I am somewhat optimistic about the potential for internal growth I would bet heavily* against us getting there unless we acquire a new best player.

I am fairly certain Leon Rose agrees with this assessment and thus will not let this roster, plus or minus a few tweaks, hit the second apron. I bet** there will be a consolidation trade, and I bet*** Leon’s first choice is for that trade to bring in our new best player.

Just keep all that in mind when you’re nitpicking the back-to-back 9 BPM guy to death. There’s gonna be a trade. You should hope it’s for someone really good.

We’re starting off in a place that’s pretty decent, and I think pretty much everybody (maybe except E) is excited for the season.

It’s a pretty natural progression to then wonder about how we might get to true title contention. In my opinion, we’re not a true title contender. Which is fine! We’ve been warmed over dog shit for 20 years, so this is a massive improvement.

I don’t know about y’all, but I’d like to really like truly contend at some point in the future, and I just don’t see that happening if we’re not willing to make more aggressive moves than bringing in Donte DiVincenzo and such. That’s a fine move in and of itself, he’s not a bad player, I am not against making marginal improvements to an already good team.

Audentes fortuna luvat is all I’m saying. Maybe Joel Embiid ain’t the guy but at some point you gotta go big if you want to go beyond the mezzanine.

Think dicussing intricate details of on a SWAT analysis on a hypothetical situation is sort of silly. Embiid is not available, we don’t know the asking price or what the market will bear.

Last year it’s likely that Leon was expecting the DAL pick to convey when he traded our (lottery-proctected) 2023 first for Josh Hart. Didn’t work out, but still. Looking at the Dallas roster, I think it’s very possible that the DAL pick conveys this year somewhere in the teens, possibly at the end of the lottery. It’s pretty clear to me that we weren’t getting the 5th seed or winning a playoff series without that trade. Will that have made us more attractive to star demanding a trade after this year, including possibly Embiid? Or Doncic? Especially if this team as is makes more noise?

I actually brought up guys like Giannis, Curry, Dirk, and Kawhi as well. The whole point I made is that there is still a chance to land high-end to superstar-level talent in the draft without abjectly tanking. So of Jokic and Butler would still have been taken outside the “arbitrary” lottery, it kind of suggests the same. Either way, I agree that it wasn’t a sound strategy to count on it happening, but it wasn’t back then either! Development is very hard to predict outside of the very top players like LeBron, AD, Duncan, Luka, etc. That hasn’t changed all that much.

One think I found out when I researched this was that Boston gave up what turned out to be the #6 pick in the 2009 draft to Minny as part of the Garnett trade, which Minny used to draft the immortal Jonny Flynn…one pick ahead of Steph!
