Donnie, we all know that’s true, but in this case, the offer was obscenely above anything that the Hawks would have matched. Here’s an article to refresh your recollection:

The Knicks appear to have severely outbid the competition for Hardaway. According to ESPN’s Kevin Arnovitz, the Hawks’ intended offer was, well, much lower.

Likewise, ESPN’s Zach Lowe, who called the contract “ludicrous,” reported the Hawks were planning to offer a much lower deal.

“The Hawks were willing to offer Hardaway a four-year deal in the $48 million range, league sources said,” Lowe wrote. “The Knicks blew that out of the water with a four-year, $71 million monstrosity .”

The thing about the THJ signing is that Mills totaly bidded against himself. No team would have offered him even close to that amount.

I think he was a restricted free agent, so Mills had to outbid whatever Atlanta valued him at. Restricted free agency always results in an overpay.

The thing about the THJ signing is that Mills totaly bidded against himself. No team would have offered him even close to that amount. It left me feeling that the guy had very little grasp of either the salary cap or player valuation.

It’s also hard to know how much say Mills had during the Jacksonian Era. Or during the Isiah era. He certainly wasn’t a firewall, to say the least.

At the end of the day, it’s just glorious to not have the shitty-ass FO’s reputation stinking up even the better years. Leon just keeps his mouth shut and keeps incrementally improving the team and getting results on the court. That could change, but for now, it’s a welcome change from the decades of clown show that preceded him

THJ averaged 17-3-3 with a ~56% TS for the four years Mills signed him to, and he was very durable during that time.

It wasn’t a good contract and Mills wasn’t a good GM, but it wouldn’t have been one of Phil Jackson’s 5-10 worst moves. It was just kind of blandly mediocre.

Now that I have thought about it for a moment, minus some goofy draft day reshuffling acts, Leon Rose has effectively been the monkey sitting at a desk eating a banana with the franchise safely in No Trade/Autodraft mode. And look at the results: he’s not in the worst POBO in franchise history discussion at all!

The problem with Mills (and Isiah, and Jackson, and Layden) is that a monkey sitting at a desk eating a banana during all the decision-making meetings would have had a better success rate just by virtue of doing nothing. If the team had just been out on No Trade/Autodraft mode for those 20 years, the team would have been so much better.

The exits of Melo and Porzingis were not easy to manage. I’m pretty sure a monkey would have ended up giving Kristaps the supermax he was looking for and we wouldn’t be where we are today.
