Ron Harper was my favorite player in the NBA back then (even little Donnie knew in his heart to look outside of the Knick’s universe for happiness). I don’t remember him almost being a Knick. But that’s probably because I was distracted by girls at the time.

I was at Game 4 in ‘94. They won. That was fun.

OJ ruined game 5. Lock him up.

(Rolando won game 4 against the Hornets in the 2nd round in ‘93. That was a huge shot that enabled the Knicks to win that series quickly to prepare for the Bulls (ha).)

He did dominate Hakeem on the boards and averaged over 4 blocks per game in the series at least. The 1993 Knicks team is the one that should've won it all, they were all healthy during the playoffs. The 1994 team was running on fumes by the end of the playoffs. Starks plus Smith took a couple of rounds to get into playing shape after missing much of the final 2 months of the regular season, Oak was playing with a broken toe in the Finals and Ewing was nowhere near as athletic as he was even the prior year when he was great in the entire playoffs.

Don't get me started on the 1997 team.....

Just in case that came across as harsh, I will say this in defense of Ewing's performance: the Knicks played 25 out of a possible 26 playoff games, with all 3 longer series going to 7 games in utterly grueling fashion. Ewing played more minutes than anyone during that run, averaging 41.3 mpg for the playoffs and 44.0 mpg in the finals. He left it all on the floor and just came up a bit short against a formidable foe. I don't feel even one ounce of resentment towards him, and actually feel bad for him because he deserved better teammates than management gave him.

I was at both Game 3 and Game 5. My feeling at the time and to this day is that the Knicks were royally fucked by the 2-3-2 format. When teams are evenly matched, as those two teams were, it is a given that the series is going to go 6 or 7 games. Winning 3 in a row to close the series out in 5, even at home, would result in a gentleman's sweep (my preferrred definition) which implies that one team was definitely much better than the other. So even if we had won game 3, assuming that we would have gone on to win games 4 and 5 is a stretch.

Even so, the bottom line is that we needed to win a game 6 or game 7 on the road and didn't get it done. The main reason we didn't get it done is that Patrick Ewing and his .390 TS% was thoroughly outplayed by Hakeem Olajuwan for the entire series. This was especially true in Game 6, when Ewing went 6-20 for 17 points in 45 minutes. Ewing was tremendous in Game 5, but that was pretty much it.

As to Rolando Blackman, the main wondering at the time was whether Riley should have given him minutes in Game 7 when Starks was going 2-18. But Blackman was totally shot on defense...and Riley wasn't gonna take a chance. Alas...to this day, I still am resigned to feeling that the better team won, and it was because their HOF center was just better than our HOF center and because we didn't have a home game in game 6. And of course, now they went back to 2-2-1-1-1...lolKnicks!

I just did something very ill advised: I watched an abridged version of the 4Q in Houston, game 6.

I love Patrick Ewing but man, he was dominated so hard. He was 6-20 in that game. And Olajuwon played a large chunk of the 4Q with 5 fouls but Patrick just sat there taking jump shots. It was painful.

Never do what I just did.
