I really enjoyed the first season of Winning Time, but this current one (which I’ve seen in its entirety thanks to screeners) did much less for me, other than Adrien Brody as Pat Riley.

Pretty good casting overall, the guy who plays Magic is very good.

If you want intensely smart but dangerous, you cast Jason Clarke. He’s the guy who water-boarded the suspects in Zero-Dark-Thirty and he’s the guy who’s out to get Oppenheimer in the boring finale. He also looks just like my 2 year old daughter, who also has anger issues. So, though I haven’t watched Winning Time, I can see why Jerry West might be a bit offended by the portrayal, especially if all he did was look at the guy’s headshot and resume.

Only thing I would critique is during season 1 they made up a bunch of final scores during the regular season. That whole road trip during Christmas time was mostly false. I can understand taking liberties with stories and exaggerating them for entertainment but considering they’re retelling an actual season where the results can be looked up in 5 seconds on your phone I thought that was a bit much making up fake results just to enhance their narrative.

I still love the show though and hope it gets picked up for a 3rd season.

Westhead’s character definitely struck me as exaggerated, maybe even unbelievable…but then I looked it up and the guy really did quote Shakespeare in the locker room.

Seems like the show’s critics are upset that a dramatization of true events is taking some creative liberties. Not sure what dramatization of true events passes that test.

The actor who plays Jerry West in Winning Time is fucking great.

If anyone should maybe be upset with how they’re portrayed on the show it should be Paul Westhead although I freaking love Jason Segal.

Winning time is pretty entertaining, it’s pretty caricature-ish so not to be taken ultra seriously but as someone who lived through that era and remembers the folks well it’s accurate enough. Unless you ask Jerry West.
