We will be a handful for opponents every night and should have a winning record. I’m not sure that we are a top-5 team in the East again, but we should be a blast to watch and root for.

When I look around I see a lot of teams I expect to improve more than the Knicks due to significant injuries last year, very young high quality recent draft picks that should improve, quality players added this year etc..

Okay, but we’ll improve by having Hart available for 50 extra games. And by not having Fournier or Cam Reddish in the lineup for 30ish games.

Those are no different than missing guys due to injury.

We were much better than our 47 win record said.

Brunson missed 10 of the 25 games Hart played and we still managed a 50 win pace.

First you need to determine what our record should’ve been based on our end of season rotation, then adjust for the changes other teams made.

He had a career high 2p%, 3p%, FT% and TS% for NY. Some of those numbers look too high to think they can possibly be sustained. He also had a team leading on/off of +10.3 among rotation players.

He had a +12.8 on/off when he was in Portland, so it was actually lower in NY.

His 2p% of .601 last year was only marginally lower despite taking 2 more shots per 36.

Regardless, the effect size is minimal because he takes so few shots.

I’m thinking in terms of the entire league. I’m also thinking more in terms of record (under/over) and not just ranking.

Okay, but we’re talking about ranking & specifically whether we’ll make thr playoffs, or at least should be favored to do so, or if we’ll be fighting for the play-in.

Charlotte had key players out last year and drafted high. They may not threaten us in the standings, but they will be a lot better than they were last year.

There are young teams with more internal upside.

Orlando, Detroit, Indiana, Houston, San Antonio, and OKC will be better (OKC could be a lot better).

Minnesota will be tougher with a healthy Towns all season.

I like the Cavs off season.

Dallas has a better team and won’t be tanking games.

New Orleans could have heathier season with Zion and Ingram playing more games.

The Lakers will have a full season with the team that played well down the stretch.

Portland and Washington are the two teams that should take a significant step back, but whoever gets Lillard will probably be better (Miami?).

We’ll see what happens with the 76ers and Clippers.

I think we are going to have tough time winning 47 games this year unless someone takes a serious step forward or we make another move either now or before the deadline.

Knicks were on a 48 win pace post-Cam and pre-Hart, which is pretty much where they ended up.

And despite shooting 50% from 3, Hart shot so few 3s it likely didn’t make too much of a difference.

Hart took fewer 3PAs (52) than Cam (56) & Rose (63). Less than 50% of Deuce (134) & Fournier (114).

IMO, there are way too many moving parts to try to get a wins contribution based on their record pre Hart and post Hart. It would take a very serious analysis of the entire league. It’s simpler to look at the obvious. He had a career high 2p%, 3p%, FT% and TS% for NY. Some of those numbers look too high to think they can possibly be sustained. He also had a team leading on/off of +10.3 among rotation players. So beyond the positive impact we were all seeing, that’s another data point that suggests he was playing especially well in every other way too.

Hart played over his head. Expect his return to more average shooting to be a net negative. You don’t need to go beyond that. How much is hard to quantify, but it will be negative.
