Feels like a really impressive job by KP’s agent…
KP was almost certainly going to opt in and hope for an extension with a trade partner given the market out there.
Now he gets traded to a championship level team who gave up their heart and soul to get him. He can probably write whatever number he wants on his own extension offer, sign it, and give it to Brad Stevens for bookkeeping.

Say what you will about Michael Winger — writ large he is doing what he should be doing, but I don’t see any poker player at all in him — just getting whatever is offered and sending people out the door without trying to “win” any of the deals.

The WAS pick has protections out to 2026. It may never convey as such, but it is still has some speculative value and is something that can be held over WAS’s head since it impedes their ability to trade picks until then.

Beyond that, it is interesting how WAS is totally tearing it down to the studs without getting much back beyond cap relief. One would think that a more savvy GM could have netted more in return for KP than they got, as well as Beal. Not a single first rounder in the mix for a team that seems committed to rebuilding? That seems like a fire sale to the extreme…

As to the Celts, I think a healthy KP makes them better and opens up the floor for Brown, Tatum, and White; while subtracting Smart shifts the leadership vacuum to a less volatile group at the cost of some of the best defense in the league. I don’t get the talk about Smart entering his decline phase, he just turned 29…and his contract seemed more than reasonable. It is a weird transition as they are definitely losing toughness and leadership, and if KP gets hurt and their other injury-prone players (Brogdan, RWIII) start breaking down, not to mention Al Horford being 37, they may be an early playoff exit, especially if the Knicks and Miami beef things up. But they still have some ammo to further upgrade their rotation, and some open roster spots.

Given that Washington is rebuilding, we may never get the protected first rounder they owe us. I’d consider taking number 35 this year and a future second to give the future first round pick back to Washington. Basically we would be trading our rights to two future seconds to one this year and one in the future.

The article I read about the trade incorrectly left out Tyus Jones, so I stand corrected. He’s a pretty nice little player, though he does have just one year remaining on his contract. Maybe Washington will look to flip him for another more long-term kind of piece.

Smart is a perfect fit with Morant in Memphis, but Tyus Jones was also a perfect backup for Morant, in the sense that he could easily lead the team whenever Morant was hurt (they have performed very well whenever Morant has been hurt in the regular season). So now, that role will be Smart’s. I don’t know if he’s up to it.

Wow, can’t believe the Celts dealt Smart….

I’m stunned. It seems to go against everything the Celtics seemed to have been built around. That said, I do think it’s fair to note that Smart is likely to be hitting a major decline somewhat soon.

It kind of makes sense for Washington; they get Tyus Jones, who is a nice pick up for a rebuilding team, Gallinari, Mike Muscala, and the 35th pick in this year’s draft for Porzingis, who they didn’t want to keep. This seems good for them. From Boston’s point of view they send out Gallinari, Muscala and Smart and get back KP (who opts in as part of the deal) and two first round picks, number 25 this year and the Warriors top four protected pick next year. That seems great for Boston. I think Smart is good but declining and they still have Brogden, White and Pritchard. Just trading Smart for KP would probably be a decent deal for Boston but they go first rounders too. I don’t really understand it for Memphis. They traded Tyus Jones and two first round picks for Smart. They do have to replace Jones, especially while Morant is suspended, but it seems like they may have overpaid for Smart.

Edit: this post crossed with some of the posts above. I think Jones, who is young (21) and apparently well worth his two year $30m contract is a great pickup for Washington

They gave up three years of control of Marcus Smart on a cheap deal for one year of Porzingis on a not so cheap deal.

Washington got very little in exchange for Porzingis: #35 pick this year, Muscala, and Gallinari. Peanuts.
