I’m still of the opinion that a lot of modern athletes are using something. It may not be on some official list of illegal substances because the authorities haven’t figured what it is or how to test for it yet, but it’s out there. When Steve Nash won his first of two undeserved MVP awards, LeBron James was probably the best player in the basketball.

Since then, I have become legally aged to drink alcohol in the U.S., graduated from three different institutions, fallen ass-backwards into a career, moved like four times, bought a house, gotten smartly married and stupidly divorced, and wasted an uncountable number of hours on Knickerblogger.net. And LeBron James is currently sitting at 13th in BPM during an injury-riddled season.

Who has had a career arc like Butler’s, where he peaks in his mid-30s? Sam Cassell is the only person who really comes to mind, but he wasn’t a perennial all-star BEFORE his peak like Butler’s been.

I believe the name you’re looking for here is Steve Nash, who leapt from All-Star to MVP level in his 30’s and had a better stretch from 30-37 than he did from 23-29.
