Not here to compare them as players or their Knicks legacies but for fans of my age the equivalent of Willis Reed is obviously Patrick Ewing. Ewing was always very complimentary to the legendary Knicks champions as was Reed towards Ewing.

RIP Willis. As a youngster in ‘72, I didn’t want the Knicks to win the finals because he couldn’t play. Foolish in the hindsight of me as an adult, but why I root for this team 50 years later was because of Willis.

Doesn’t really matter if the Knicks play the Cavs or Sixers; doesn’t really matter if the Rangers play the Devils or Hurricanes. Pretty dead time in the schedules; if this was NBA or NHL 2K23, I’d autoplay all the remaining games and just start up the playoffs.

I’d assume at least a black band on the uniform, if not a “19” patch, for Willis’s passing, but Dolan’s such a tool, who knows?

Unfortunately I wasn’t alive during the championship years but I know how much Willis Reed meant to the city and the fans. Sad to hear about his passing.

As my late father sold Willis a few cars, I was lucky enough to get to know him in the late ’60s. Besides being the bedrock of those Knicks’ teams, he was just a great guy. Years after he retired, I ran into him. He recognized me and asked about my father. RIP Captain.
