Owen, sorry to hear that. With the obligatory "this is not legal advice" caveat, my impression is renters absolutely have rights in that situation. Landlords have a duty to keep their premises habitable and safe, so if there's evidence their negligence led to a fire, well, that's pretty clear evidence they did not do that.

The remedy here would be a suit for damages, which is not my area of expertise (these occur outside of housing court) but the claim is pretty straightforward: your friend is entitled to recover any losses resulting from the fire, plus the possibility of punitive damages.

"I would love to see a good paper on how much age matters vs NBA experience. How do the growth curves differ for guys who spend 2-3 years in college?

I don’t believe RJ has any projection left physically. And he has played a crapload of NBA minutes. I don’t see why a light switch will go on after 6000 minutes. But it could happen and I hope it will."

I don't see anyway to eliminate major bias from such a study. How can you possibly tell how RJ would have fared if he had stayed in college for 3-4 years, or how Jimmy Butler would have done in the NBA at age 19? Or Brunson, for that matter.

Even if there was a way to control for specific player types, the nature of both the way the NBA game is played and of the draft pool itself has changed so dramatically over the past decade or so. Offenses and defenses are so geared towards positionless basketball and three point shooting that it may take longer to acclimate and find a niche.

I think that strat's points about RJ are very reasonable. Because he possesses neither elite athleticism or skills, his improvement path would be more incremental than involving a big leap.

I agree that he isn't likely to get much bigger, stronger, faster, etc. But can he improve his handle? 3pt shooting? FT shooting? Finishing? Decision-making? Defensive technique? Will having better players like Brunson around him help?

Personally, I am not sure what his ceiling is, but I am no longer concerned about his floor.

I'm more worried about RJ's defense, this season he's been kind of bad on that side. We need a defensive stopper for this team to make some sense.
I was thinking of going to the Grizz game, we could meet at that time, or at a bar for the Portland game. When I'm in town my schedule is fairly flexible though, so I can really do any date, so long as I'm around. For Christmastime I won't be around come January, so for me it would have to be before the 28th or so, unless we wanted to do multiple KB meetups (which would be great!)

Also, I'm going to the Knicks Sixers game on Christmas :)

Jalen has been amazing. I have a lot of confidence in that contract right now. He has been, by far, our best player, and at a very reasonable price. I honestly don’t know why people aren’t more excited about him.

On a separate note, TNFH, I know someone who lives in that building that caught fire in Midtown over the weekend and I will just say let’s hope for the sake of tenants rights that the NY Post doesn’t dig too deep.

Do you have any advice for a renter displaced by a fire caused by landlord negligence? Do people have any rights that are relevant in that kind of situation?

All legal advice will get you at least one beer at the meetup. And I would vote for something in January. Holidays don’t work that well on my end.
