Geo, it was me that started these names, just to have a simple name to answer to people. It's hard to come up with names, because when i said "team tank" and "team win trades", there was people against those names too. I'm running out of ideas, maybe teams "plan is great", "plan is ok", "plan is a disaster", "we have no plan"? :D

What do the optimists see as the realistic path for this team to become as good as the 90’s Knicks? Lay it out there, and let’s discuss how likely it is.

To be the 90s Knicks we need only one star (Ewing) and very good role players. We already have the latter, and we're well positioned to grab the former. What we can't do is trade for 2 stars, and that's why Donovan Mitchell wasn't the right star for us. And Booker isn't too. We need a 2-way star, i don't know who that is yet, but if we can grab one you'll see we'll instantly be the 90s Knicks. We're one move away. Of course, if the goal is championship or bust, then yeah, we're in a bad position unless one of our young guys can become a Top25 player. But to be the 90s Knicks and be a borderline contender that can get there with some luck, we're ok.

The terrible place of playing winning basketball over the last 154 games…

You know Thibs desperately wanted to win enough games at the end of last season for no benefit to the future of the Knicks so he could say that they had a winning record over the past two seasons. It was kind of hilarious how badly he wanted to be able to say that he had a winning record as the coach of the Knicks.

The terrible place of playing winning basketball over the last 154 games…

We’re 78-76 over the last 154 games. I guess that’s technically “winning basketball” but it’s nothing to write home about.

This team is not going to turn into the 90’s Knicks. It just isn’t, and we all know this. It’s not pessimistic to not believe something that is ridiculous.

There is no contradiction in those quotes.

In the first one, I am expressing a willingness to embrace our low ceiling and enjoy a team that’s “competitive and entertaining.”

In the second, I am saying anyone who thinks we have more potential than that is crazy.

There is no 50 win core here. Just because I’m willing to accept a 45 win core doesn’t mean Leon’s doing well.

The same person who said this less than a month ago about our situation:

"Space Invader says:
September 5, 2022 at 10:22
Some radical acceptance is required, Alan, to see the silver lining. But it is there.

We need to accept two more seasons of Rose, Randle, and Evan getting in the way of IQ, Obi, and Grimes.

But this plan has potential if we’re patient.

I have given Thibs grief over his strategy and tactics but I have always given him credit for his player development skills. There’s no reason to think minutes = development. Each of the three kids I mentioned has an entrenched veteran they need to displace in order to earn playing time and make money. And they have a coach who invests time and wisdom in their improvement. They also have a very strong professional culture to work in and develop the right habits. It may frustrate us not to see them play more, but I think they are all in great position to develop.

The other silver lining is that this team is actually quite good. So while we wait for the veterans to go away, we’ll likely be entertained with good basketball. The lack of high-end talent gives us a low ceiling in the playoffs but the depth, the defense, and the consistency will translate to regular season success. I haven’t ventured to guess yet but on the day the prediction thread comes out I’m definitely going to be in the upper 40’s.

So yeah, if you radically accept that there is no magic elixir in the next two years, I think you can see that we’re set up well to be competitive and entertaining for those two years. And we should be in good position once they’re up.

It is critical, though, that Rose be patient. There are no shortcuts here, and offering the farm for a ten game improvement is not the way to go."

...today says this:

"Anyone who cant see this team is fucked for the foreseeable future is kidding themselves....There is nothing to be optimistic about. We are in a terrible position. To augur otherwise is insane."

Is this all about Grimes walking around in a boot? Beyond that, doesn't seem that much has changed...
