  1. Hey look, a game thread!

    Peeping right… Peeping left…
    Are they really gone?
    Peeping again…
Yes, it looks like they’re gone.
So we can talk about basketball? About the Knicks?
    Maybe, I’m not so sure…
    Come on let’s try…

It sure seems that Thibs’ PG depth chart is well established.

Do another one of the rookies have some burn today in addition to Sims?

    No Cade Cunningham: fuck!

    Question:
have someone here read one of Richard Lu’s NBA Season Preview books? Are they worth it?

Let’s Go Knicks! (Yes, even in preseason games)

    P.S.
Thanks Knew Your Knicks, I need to be reminded every day that this year team is Plague free: hooray!

  2. ah, mmmmmmmm, that new fresh thread smell…

needed to re-up my league pass, yay, that’s done so now:

    I got a color tv
    so I can see
    the Knicks play basketball

    oh yeah :)

real happy to welcome mike and clyde back in to my home…man, how lucky are we…

  3. olay waiting for the game, 2 hopefully non controversial thoughts:

1). neat tune, but oh my lord, after 3 years now of league pass – if I never hear the star spangled banner again, I’d be very cool with that…

2). I forgot the second thing while I was typing the first…

  4. You can’t stop Taj, he’s an elite iso scorer. You can only hope to contain him.

The way Porzingis looks tonight Jason Kidd is the early favorite for coach of the year. He’s playing excellent center on both sides of the court. He looks fresher, thicker, stronger, and happier. The Knicks would be contenders with this version of Porzingis at Center.

this is why we love you, Strat.

  6. For future reference, anyone know what radio station carries the Knicks around here when the Rangers are playing at the same time? I was running errands tonight and couldn’t find it.

(And now that I’m home, I can only watch highlights on Twitter. Sigh.)

  7. Not sure if Sims was bringing the ball down but not a thing he should do.

Toppin looks twice as fast this year on the floor but his airballs look the same.

  8. I’m looking forward to the time when Sims has the “duck down, prep for the dunk, gather, mull it over for a sec, set up, do some math in his head, then rise up straight into the arms of three defenders” beaten out of him by our coaches.

  9. I mean, play the kids does not equal play Knox. But yeah, doesn’t look great.

Also not great, Charlotte down 77-33. Whatever, it’s preseason.

  10. Longtime lurker, first time poster.

I don’t want to continue the Gruden discussion but it brought up another issue for me. I would love to participate in the Knicks discussion here but the reason I have not joined before is the ick factor from the user names that reference genitalia (THCJ) and sexual acts (TNFH). I really don’t want to have a conversation about those with people either at work or at home who might see me engaging with the site. So if you can see why Gruden’s remarks make him unqualified for a management position in the USA, I hope you can also see why people would be very turned off by any screenshot of the comments from this site. Hopefully these two users will voluntarily change their display names to something less offensive but if not maybe a policy change would help.

  11. Knox with a good outlet pass, Obi with the dunk…

Two consecutive games where Knox is… useful?

  12. Obi is really good at transition dunks.

I wish I could come up with something else he’s really good at.

  13. Who am I kidding, I am watching USA – Costa Rica right now.

    GO USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    2-1

    Great goal from Weah

  14. So are coaches going to wear sweatsuits forevermore in the association? Seems like a sub-optimal development.

Hmm… gotta give W credit here. His logic is sound.

Of course, W’s own name evokes a man who got us into an unwinnable 20 year war that killed thousands. You had 26 letters to choose from, how did you manage to pick the one letter that’s offensive? ;)

  16. Yeah this team looks way worse on defense without a center who can play something other than drop coverage (luckily we have two when healthy)

  17. If this game stays close, I fear we aren’t gonna see much of Deuce and Grimes.

I mean, our unbeaten preseason is at stake here!

  18. d-mar: If this game stays close, I fear we aren’t gonna see much of Deuce and Grimes.
I mean, our unbeaten preseason is at stake here!

It’s not just Thibs, the Bulls played ALL of their 4 best players (Lonzo, Lavine, DeRozan, Vucevic) for more than 30 mins, to win against CLE by 1pt !?

  19. Hubert: Hmm… gotta give W credit here. His logic is sound.

Of course, W’s own name evokes a man who got us into an unwinnable 20 year war that killed thousands. You had 26 letters to choose from, how did you manage to pick the one letter that’s offensive? ;)

At least he didn’t pick Q ha

  20. I admire Thibs’ dedication to not letting Obi and Randle share the floor for a single solitary second

  21. A disappointing Barrett was able to turn the ball over two times in the same offensive possession…

  22. C’mon people, if you’re on the big screen, smile and wave, and let the mobile out of the way.

  23. Owen: He very much is related. His son.

Cool, didn’t knew that. I thought he’d be liberian, like his father… who is “only” the president of the country. LOL

  24. Good move by Obi.

Cyber, the USA team is wonderfully diverse and should be much much better than the previous version, which failed to qualify. We have guys in Pulisic, McKennie, and Reyna playing real minutes at the very highest levels of European soccer and a lot of other real talent.

Well, E and Z didn’t seem right so it was 1/24 but point taken. I was thinking (W)in but the association with the former president is unavoidable. How about K for Knicks? Gosh, making this change sure is easy…

Nice, i wish you luck for the WC. But don’t want to cross paths with you guys as Portugal somehow has a (very) hard time against USA every time.

  27. K – It’s a fair point but we are an autonomous collective here. Fwiw TNFH has said many times he hates his username (I don’t know why he doesn’t change it) and THCJ mysteriously alluded to what it meant and said it wasn’t genitalia, as I recall. But I may be wrong about that. Either way, there is tolerance for some fruity language on the website and this would hardly be the only website where people have some scandalous usernames.

    I like this Randle better

  28. Cyber, I watched that game in 2002 in the basement of Nevada Smith’s in the East Village completely hammered and it was the best sporting experience of my life.

  29. Owen, i didn’t enjoy it at all. :P
And then in Brazil, a draw i think, but we were behind if i remember it well. Also that draw sent USA to the knockout stage and sent Portugal home.

  30. W, K, whatever works best for you…please, keep posting more…I think you may have something truly interesting to share…

    immerse yourself and worry later…

we can always use an extra poster whom may have a unique perspective to share…

start easy with team observations or analysis, and then go for it…

  31. Taj was like, “Okay, I’ll come back this year, but I’m gonna get my pointzzzzzzzzz.”

  32. It’s like I always say: Taj Gibson is an unstoppable offensive force. We should build our whole attack around him.

  33. Alan:
It’s like I always say: Taj Gibson is an unstoppable offensive force. We should build our whole attack around him.

Haha! He might get some minutes backing up Julius when Noel and Mitch come back…especially if he keeps making threes.

  34. Our record stand pristine and friday we can go for a spotless preseason,
still I’m always a bit unsatisfied when no one of the youngsters play well and tonight they were barely enough (RJ), mediocre (Toppin), bad (Jericho) or worse (IQ)… but Amir’s defense was a surprise.

It will be hard to strip minutes from Taj, Noel and Mitch are better be ready to fight for playing time.
Plus, it was only one game but I already miss Kemba…

  35. Such a weird game. Knicks slept walk through the first 2 and a half quarters and then Thibs said, “you motherfuckers better give me effort or I’ll go Liam Neeson on your ass!” Simms changed the game with his D which is why having a rim protector like Noel or Mitch is so key to Knicks D/success.

Randle looked very sharp second half.

  36. Z-man:
    I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a team losing by 68 before…

From what I kind find, this Heat-Cavs game from 1991 is the worst loss in NBA history, Cavs won by 68.

A while back, during the dark years of Isiah Thomas, I went to a Knicks game against I think Dallas. We were losing like 100-40 at halftime but I don’t know what the final score was because I left at halftime.

  37. It’s hard to give full effort when you know the opponent is much weaker than us, but at the last minute they put in the extra effort, went on a run, got the W and enjoyed the crowd (a small taste of what’s to come). It was an OK game.

  38. Damn it, had to do a quick errand, and missed the Deuce-Grimes one minute of play!

Can’t believe I watched 46 minutes of game and missed the one thing I was hoping to catch.

  39. Katz:

Tom Thibodeau ends his postgame press conference with one statement:

“I’m just a laid back dude.”

    Thibs the comedian!

  40. Raven: Damn it, had to do a quick errand, and missed the Deuce-Grimes one minute of play!
Can’t believe I watched 46 minutes of game and missed the one thing I was hoping to catch.

LOL. 16 seconds was with McBride dribbling the clock out. ;)

  41. It’s pretty awesome that ever since last season League Pass shows MSG pre and post game shows. Doesn’t look like they do it for any other teams either, hope this continues throughout this season.

  42. vincoug: A while back, during the dark years of Isiah Thomas, I went to a Knicks game against I think Dallas. We were losing like 100-40 at halftime but I don’t know what the final score was because I left at halftime.

Maybe you’re referring to the Dec 21, 2004 game. 75-36 at halftime… oof!

  43. Owen: Nets no longer offering Kyrie a contract extension

That makes sense, right? Would you commit hundreds of millions to a guy you don’t even know if he’ll show up for work?

  44. Dame is probably super happy right now, the Blazers are 0-3 in the preseason. He played 2 games, which they lost by 14 and… 45 points !?

  45. If you’re going to equate my dopey username with Jon Gruden being a bigoted piece of human garbage at least have the decency to do it when I’m not at The Taj Gibson (Preseason) Game

  46. I couldn’t watch the game. From the box score Taj and Jericho Sims played a total of 37 minute. Can someone please tell me who played the other 11 minutes at center?

  47. Aamir Simms played with Julius for some reason in the 2nd half. Played some decent defense at least

  48. Was it Amir Simms? He’s pretty short for a center, but from the comments above, did pretty well on defense.

  49. Thanks very much. I wasn’t thinking of him as a center but I guess he did pretty well

  50. I really haven’t watched much preseason, but through 3 games Obi & point-IQ’s boxscores are not too impressive.

  51. Quicks shot should start falling eventually so not that worried about him. 14 assists to 0 TO’s is also pretty good even for preseason

  52. Yeah, wouldn’t surprise me that IQ is trying REALLY hard to be a good point guard, and it’s messing with his free-flowing scoring mentality a bit.

He’s definitely not controlling the game the way a good point guard can (yet), but he is racking up a boatload of assists.

  53. Pg is the most difficult position to play, it takes a lot of mental focus that can otherwise go towards scoring efficiently. IQ might be fine, but he might not. It’s a small sample, but I feel less good about IQ than I did after preseason game 1.

Also, I’m pretty sure he has 3 TOs (still a good ratio)

  54. I want to give Knox enough minutes this season to see if he’s actually a good shooter. He’s probably too bad at everything else tho

  55. ***at the last minute they put in the extra effort, went on a run, got the W***

What did they get him on, war crimes?

  56. evian didn’t look too bad to me on D…

his best DPBM to date has been 0.7 last year, I think he can get to over 1.0 this year…

taj definitely hustles and mostly plays smart, but, can’t wait to get mitch and or nerlens back there guarding the rim and messing with the other team…

it’ll be interesting if we get to see kemba, rose, evian, julius and mitch out there playing together…

we have a pretty decent 1 thru 8, quik and obi contributing will be like found money…

  57. Nice to see Julius burying 3’s again….I agree with BBA that it looks for real.

Taj has always been a rock-solid player. He’s evolved from an old-school crafty low-post PF to a small-ball C, which at this stage in his career is perfect for him. In a way, he keeps Obi, Nerlens and Mitch honest…but also can fill in for extended minutes without much of an overall drop-off except for rim protection. He just might be the best third-string big in the league.

  58. Even if his numbers maybe can drop a bit this year, I’m very happy that we have Julius inked for years and that his extension was made without the usual “Knicks Drama” we were accustomed for so long.

He’s a workaholic, looks like a good family guy and wants to play in New York.

Does he make me mad sometimes with his twirling turnovers or his bulldozing offensive fouls?
Yes, but I’m glad he’s one of us.

  59. Taj is the ultimate professional and his array of old-fashioned moves is nice to watch,
I hope he can pass some of them to Mitch or Jericho, with his indispensable defensive savvy.

    P.S.
I split my post in two because I feel personally offended that a thread centered around an arrogant bigot millionaire have more posts than a game thread, even in pre-season.
Now it’s 133 to 132: take this Gruden!

  60. On the one hand, it’s disappointing that we struggled so much against the Pistons b-team, that the kids mostly didn’t play well (or in some cases barely played at all), and that Thibs felt he had to put the starters back in near the end.

On the other, every team in the association is gonna have nights where they can’t help playing down to the level of the competition, and Randle got to remind us why he is both our best player and one of the better players in the league overall.

And Taj’s crafty old man game is a delight.

  61. Guys – I hate to say it but I don’t think a big Julius regression is coming. He is just so much better now than he was a couple years ago. His handle (and balance) are just so amazing for a man his size. There was a play last night where he drove hard to his off-hand (right), then behind the back to his left, directly into a stepback from the elbow – all net. I mean, that is elite guard ballhandling stuff, except he’s 6’9″ 250lbs. I dunno – I feel reasonably comfortable that he has a top3 handle of dudes who play the 4. Who else is there? Lebron, KD, and…?

  62. You never know, maybe if Detroit had played their kids they would have done worse. They do probably have a lot to learn

  63. On the other, every team in the association is gonna have nights where they can’t help playing down to the level of the competition,

Agreed, if this was a regular season game we would took the win and shout “next one!”, but still, in a meaningless game some small details were a little disappointing.

  64. Frank: Julius (…) I dunno – I feel reasonably comfortable that he has a top3 handle of dudes who play the 4. Who else is there? Lebron, KD, and…?

…maybe in the mix, Giannis, Tatum, Draymond, Bam, Zion, Blake.

  65. One thing that’s confirmed, at least for me, is that this team is really deep.
Even yesterday we got contribution from a lot of guys, including unexpected ones like Knox and Amir.

At full strenght this is an adaptable and flexible roster, closer to a real “Big 15” than last year alleged one.

  66. I am not presently sure whether Taj has a 1st Teamor 2nd Team All NBA ceiling. It’s a hard one. Third Team is the floor though.

  67. [warning: all of this “analysis” comes from a guy who has only seen highlights and read this game thread because my stupid cable company is stupid]

The other thing — which I assume we’ll have to carry into the new thread — is whether this is just what the team looks like on the nights where one point guard or the other is out. IQ’s assist numbers have been pretty good this preseason, but y’all keep saying he doesn’t really look like a point guard yet. And Rose is better suited these days as a change of pace offensive hub than as a playmaker for the starters. So on the inevitable nights where Rose needs rest and/or Kemba is nursing an injury, we may be back to the old four yards and a cloud of Julius Randle dust offense again.

  68. Speaking of Randle and Melo, I’ve always thought of Randle as the anti-Melo. He always thinks he has to improve instead of thinking he’s great, he wants to be coached and he’s happy to pass the ball. Melo was none of those things.

  69. Speaking of Randle and Melo, I’ve always thought of Randle as the anti-Melo. He always thinks he has to improve instead of thinking he’s great, he wants to be coached and he’s happy to pass the ball. Melo was none of those things.

And yet Randle in many ways is exactly what we wanted Smallball Power Forward Melo to be.

  70. I agree, it is what we wanted Melo to be. But he never was what we wanted. Maybe he’s an über-Melo instead of an anti- Melo.

  71. Alan: IQ’s assist numbers have been pretty good this preseason, but y’all keep saying he doesn’t really look like a point guard yet.

EYE TEST: I’m definitely in the IQ can be an all star camp, but he has looked a bit “off” — especially last night. Yes, his handle looks better, and he’s looking for and hitting guys inside for easy hoops, but his own scoring is suffering. I also think he’s working doubly hard on defense and so may be overplaying at times. I still think he’ll get it together, but I see frustration there. As many mentioned, Thibs went nuts on him for some mistake last night. I didn’t see exactly why.

EDIT: Nevertheless, we are deeeeep. Burks looks ready to go. Taj obv. Fournier (to me) looks like a smart player on both ends. Our excitement is justified.

  72. cybersoze: …maybe in the mix, Giannis, Tatum, Draymond, Bam, Zion, Blake.

I don’t think any of those guys has the handle that Julius has. Maybe Tatum but he’s really a small-ball 4, plays 3 most of the time (Julius outweighs him by like 40 lbs). Giannis’s handle is not that advanced – he’s just 3-4″ taller and way longer. The other guys? No way Giannis, Draymond, Bam, Zion, or Blake could realistically do the move that Julius did in a game…
