There’s no actual proof that the virus is airborne. Let’s not spread fake-ish news.

I mean there’s no actual proof of anything at this early stage. Here is what NHS of England states:

Because it’s a new illness, we do not know exactly how coronavirus spreads from person to person. Similar viruses are spread in cough droplets.

So everything is conjecture, everything is fake news. We shouldn’t pay attention to the CDC or WHO since nothing is proven. Is that what you’re arguing?

The CDC states that surface to hand to face is “not thought to be the main way the virus spreads”. Clearly for this to be a “pandemic” like WHO terms it, someone coughing or sneezing into another person’s mouth, nose, or eyeballs is not the main path. That leaves inhaling the droplets in the air (“breathing in air”) as the main transmission which is what Osterholm stated and I wrote. CDC mentioned this as the other method of transmission. How is that “fake or even fake-ish news”? Or how is that “spreading misinformation” like Frank accused me of? That’s consistent with and implied by the CDC statements though they never stated it outright.

The CDC never talked about whether droplets hang in the air for an unknown period of time in a circumscribed area where the carrier coughed, sneezed or exhaled. It’s true this is where I’m speculating and I indicated as much. It’s just not logical to me that this could be a pandemic unless this were true and the primary transmission mechanism is indeed through the inhalation of droplets and not through surface to hand to face. BTW the NHS has stated that flu droplets could hang in the air for up to 2-3 hours and the flu and common cold are listed as airborne illnesses on many sites.

But i do find it funny how major crises get refracted through sports and celebrity. Like with the Mike Piazza home run or a million other examples.

I think love is inherently irrational, with guys like frank, boban etc I think that has some kind of innate weirdness, underdog, hard working guy that you can really relate to and hope to also get to something in your life..

and this my friends is the true essence of fandom 🙂

for me that’s in the promise/hope/potential of our young guys – although maybe a little less sympathetic and huggable character, that definitely includes mitch and RJ too…i wanna have those same feeling for kevin, it’s just really hard to do…heck, last year it was really hard for me to root strongly for frank…my affection for him really just started growing this past summer in the world championships…

This may be a semantic issue. Osterholm says the main transmission path is “breathing in air” which is what I wrote. Osterholm and CDC agree that transmission via surface to hand to face is not the main path. Inhaling droplets in air is technically different from an airborne virus.

I don’t think all those people at Biogen conference contracted the virus by carriers sneezing or coughing into their noses, mouths or eyeballs. Some might have contracted it by a carrier coughing/sneezing standing near them and they then breathed in the air right away. To me, though, most probable is that droplets remain suspended in air for some period of time and people breathe them in; it doesn’t have to happen right away with the carrier standing right next to you.

This is from a study in 2018 concerning the common flu virus:

Researchers say it may be possible to spread the virus simply by breathing. Until now, it was thought that people picked up a flu virus when they touched contaminated surfaces or inhaled droplets in the air ejected by an infected person’s coughs or sneezes. But the new study finds coughs and sneezes may not be necessary to saturate the air with flu virus. People with flu generate infectious aerosols [droplets that stay suspended in the air for a long time] even when they are not coughing…. nearly half (48 percent) of the airborne samples captured in the air around flu patients who were just breathing — not coughing or sneezing — contained detectable influenza virus. What’s more, when patients did sneeze, that didn’t seem to add much to the viral count in the samples.
