Pop is amazing.

I think the strategy is pretty clear.

You can score efficiently with great players that do great things or you can score efficiently with good players that get more great shots (hopefully you have both).

To get great shots you have to find selfless players that are willing passers, that move without the ball, that set good picks, that play within the system, and that make good pass and shot selection decisions etc... If put together a team with those qualities that buys in, you'll get more high quality shots of the type your players prefer (including role players) than the average team.

This is kind of why I've been down on our player selection. We've been focusing our attention on shot creators. You need a few guys like that, but unless they are great players they won't accomplish much. You need team oriented high basketball IQ ball movers and decision makers.

This Spurs team is such a great weird oddball team. On paper they should stink. This is a team with an offense built around Lamarcus Aldridge, Demar Derozan and Rudy Gay. They shoot fewer threes than any team in the league. Somehow it's the #7 offense in the NBA.

I don't know how Popovich got that team to win 48 games but it's a very impressive achievement. They have a really good chance to knock off a #2 seed.

Ah yes, always want to pay the greatest forward of all time like $38M a year to be a secondary playmaker in his mid-thirties.

Last season, LeBron and the Cavs needed some atrocious refereeing to get past Oladipo and the Pacers, got stretched to seven games by a Boston team whose best players were Al Horford and a 20-year-old rookie, then got manhandled by the Warriors. Add in LeBron deciding to just stop playing defense a few years ago and the metaphysical certainty that he will not be the first athlete to beat Father Time, and the reality is that Magic and Co. were absolutely right.

The idea that you can compete for a title by surrounding LeBron with shooters has clearly passed its sell-buy date. If LeBron really wants to win a title in LA, he's going to have to make the same sacrifices for the team that Bosh and Love made for him.
