Boston? You mean the team that supported three hall of famers with Kendrick Perkins and Rajon Rondo? Who was the weak link in that starting 5? That team was built perfectly.

Go look at Perkins and Rondos numbers from the year before and tell me they weren’t going into that year with stars and scrubs.

Miami pulled it off, yes. They had a player considered by many to be the GOAT, an outstanding coach, and got lucky AF with their “scrubs”. That’s an extremely hard model to duplicate.

So, you’re saying it worked? Sounds like the two times teams tried it, it worked.

The Knicks are going in with Mitch, a top 5 pick, and some decent young players. I don’t see it being too different than either of those two. Arguably better, since Mitch and the 5 pick will be there after.

Yes but he was on the floor with other Knicks. It’s not that he is good on defense, but the team around you matters when assessing your impact on defense. If he is surrounded by decent defenders then the overall numbers when he’s on the floor will be better than when he was on the Knick’s

He might still be unplayable against the Rockets and the Warriors, but does that mean he’s simply unplayable all the time against all the other teams, who are not quite literally some of the best offenses we’ve ever seen in the history of the league? How many Centers are even playable against the Warriors or against Harden anyway, the guy who destroyed Rudy freaking Gobert in the playoffs last season?

All I’m saying is that the pendulum has swung too far on this one, from praising his production to arguing that everything he does is empty calories in every single game.

I’m not arguing that he might have been a plus this game, I’m arguing that he’s likely to not be a plus over 7 games, and that if he is a plus in any individual game it’s because the other team simply failed to take advantage of the worst defensive player in the league.

Kanter has a -1.74 PIPM, good for 412th in the league, and a -1.78 RAPM, good for 60th among NBA centers.

His offense is likely overrated (negative OPIPM and ORAPM, actually) because he’s a complete black hole who doesn’t create and who completely fucks your spacing up. When he was on the Knicks this year, opposing PPP was 1.169, which would lead the league in PPP by a fair margin. The Warriors would be second at 1.124.

When Enes Kanter is on the floor teams on average play better offense than the Golden State Warriors. That’s by definition unplayable unless you’re one of the greatest offensive players of all time.

I don’t mean to accuse you of saying that Nurk is overrated–I just think a lot of people actually underrate him. He’s the second best player on that team by a wide margin. Kanter is not a suitable replacement in any sense.

If you truly think his rebounding made no difference in the game today, you’re crazy. I’ve never said he’s better than Nurkic too, or even that he’s on the same level, just that people are overrating the impact the switch from Nurkic to Kanter has had on this Blazers team, turning a OKC team that can’t shoot and has been stumbling for weeks into the hands down favorite against the 3rd seed in the West.

Yeah, I never said he was great you know? Just that this reputation of being unplayable that follows Kanter wherever he goes is bullshit. Even if he was the literal worst defender in NBA history, there’s still a lot of value in what he does bring to a team, and today was a good example, example, not proof, of it.

Nurkic is actually really really good (every metric agrees on this). And Kanter is very overrated by box score metrics because they don’t capture just how horrible–how truly, soul-rendingly bad–he is on the defensive end. I thought that at the very least that the members of this board wouldn’t take the double-doubles seriously if only given that we’ve had to endure his defensive lapses for well over a year. This is the guy who Billy Donovan (“can’t play Kanter”) had to take out against Houston because he was targeted literally every possession. If he’s succeeding, it’s only because the other team is too dumb to take advantage. He’s the definition of basketball empty calories.

I don’t think the point is that Enes is great or anything…because he’s not.

I think the point is that there’s something screwy when fans of the worst team of the league term a guy who can get you a double-double on almost any night “unplayable” while simultaneously losing their minds about a guy who plays the same position who, I believe, got 4 or fewer rebounds in 24 games this season and didn’t score a single point from beyond 19 feet in today’s NBA.
