The alternatives are not very good offensive players that are competent on defense. They are mediocre offensive players that are bad on defense. The best lineup may still be with Frank at PG.

Trey Burke is by far our best offensive PG. After an horrific start to the season, he’s regressing to the mean, i.e. efficient scoring (his TS% in November is up over 57%) good-to-great mid-range shooting (his % on long 2’s is up to 45% after a terrible start), a high ast-to ratio, and an ability to get to the rim. His 3pt% is at a career low right now so that should also regress to the mean and lift his TS% over .600. So the alternative is a very good offensive PG who is terrible on D. And the stats say that Burke right now is the lesser of two evils by far. the +/- numbers paint an especially very ugly picture for Frank.

And there is little statistical evidence to suggest that Frank is playing well defensively. His DBPM is -1.1 (bad) his DRtg is 115 (horrific), his DWS are 0.2 (same as Timmy and Hezonja, lower than Kanter) and his steal rate, while 2nd on the team, is lower that Mudiay’s.

Andre Roberson never had even close to a negative DBPM. Dejounte Murray’s was 3.4 in his 2nd year.

Frank is statistically one of the worst rotation players in the league right now. But keep squinting!

I think he is playable as a backup, or on a starting set with other players who are strong scorers, but it definitely would help if he did better.

Question: is a player that is #1 in the league in defense but dead last in the league in offense playable on a winning team in this day and age? I’m thinking the answer is no, which doesn’t bode well for Frank, who is simply the latter at this point (as he needs to basically double his offensive productivity just to be as bad as Andre Roberson).

In fairness, the Magic have been scoring pretty heavy lately. Over 100 in the last 10 games, and 8 of those 10 were 110+…….2 being against us, but that’s beside the point.

As bad as Frank is on offense at PG, he’s totally useless on offense at the wing. He’s too bad on offense to play unless the rest of the team is stacked with offense, but he’s one of our few good defenders. It’s quite a dilemma.

I don’t think it’s a dilemma. He’s a 20 year old with potential on a terrible team. You play him 25-30 minutes a game.

IMO, Klay Thompson is simultaneously underrated and overrated. He’s way more valuable than the box score models give him credit for. His role on that team is to create space, score efficiently, and play lock down defense. He’s great at that. However, he’s great in his role on offense because he’s playing with several great playmakers and scorers and gets to play off them. He wouldn’t be as effective as a #1 or even #2 option on another team.

His shooting slump this year is just noise.
