In his rookie year Fields was playing for D'Antoni in a system that suited him well. He was getting a lot of wide open looks and scoring in transition. Then when they started guarding him he showed he couldn't get a shot off quick enough and didn't have the speed or handle to create a shot on his own. So he became almost useless on offense. Then the injuries sort of killed him in Toronto. He was good statistically as a rookie due to conditions. He was not a good basketball player.

Landry Fields' rookie year with the Knicks was just a massive outlier of a year in terms of his three point shooting. He was a mediocre three point shooter for Stanford and then shot .393 with the Knicks, despite having a knuckleball jump shot and a stroke that didn't look very repeatable. He rattled a bunch of them in as a rookie, but it wasn't sustainable.

He shot .337 from 3PT as a senior at Stanford, and was a career 67% free throw shooter in college. There was just no way that .393 3PT% as a Knick rookie was anything other than a mirage. Eventually he turned into a pumpkin.

The Knicks screwed with Fields’ shot and basically ruined his career.

Yes, he arrived with an awkward, slow release, but it worked: He shot threes pretty well his first year. Then we “rehauled” his shot the following summer and that was that.

I wouldn't call it infamous, as Owen was comparing their slashing style of play, not the overall quality of production. Fields had an excellent rookie year and was never really the same thereafter. Cue Z-man to tell me that Fields was always bad and I just don't know anything about basketball.

Of course, discrediting excellent rookie years is a big part of what we do here. And ignoring terrible rookie years in the spirit of "untapped potential" is the other side of that coin.
