2014-15 Game Thread: Knicks @ Hawks

It’s 2015. Everyone has access to the internet. So when the Associated Press goes out of their way to write:

New York has the inside track to the most ping-pong balls in the lottery since the tiebreaker with the Timberwolves goes in the Knicks’ favor if they finish the season tied.

then that is not cool. That is not how it works. If two teams end the season with the same record, they split the ping pong balls evenly (so it would go from one team having a 25% chance at the #1 pick and the other team having a 20% chance to both teams having a 22.5% chance). But then, right after the season ends, the NBA flips coins to break ties to determine draft order outside of the three picks (which are decided by the ping pong balls). The coin flip will determine who is “officially” the #1 team in the draft and who is “officially” the #2 team in the draft. This matters because the #1 team can not fall lower than #4 in the draft while the #2 team can fall to #5 (under the rare occasion where the first three picks, which are the only picks actually determined by the lottery, all go to teams later in the draft, like, say, the Nuggets, the Magic and the Lakers).

Anyhow, the Knicks take on the Hawks, who rested their starters the other day but will be playing them all today (except the injured Paul Millsap). The Hawks are actually only 7-6 in their last 13 games, so this might be a slightly scary game (the last game of the season will be downright terrifying, as the Knicks can easily beat the Pistons).

  1. Come on guys, this should be easy. Please, please, don’t pull some tortoise/hare/san antonio shit on us tonight.

  2. Once I learned Atlanta was playing their starters, I figured I could safely ignore this game. Only to discover, to my genuine horror, that we’re not down by 30 yet.

  3. This team is awesome. You know they’re not even locked up for the second worst record? Philly can still tie them.

  4. Timmy knows what we’re rooting for. For him to score as many points as possible.

  5. What are you taking THJ out for, Fish? Let’s see if he can go for 20 in the quarter!

  6. If Ledo doesn’t play the rest of this game, I will be displeased. He is awesome for tanking.

  7. Seriously, we need to trade THJ for IQ reasons alone, let alone that he stinks except when we want him to be himself.

  8. This is a disgusting performance by perhaps the dumbest franchise in professional sports.

  9. You think Atlanta is letting us win to fuck with our lottery odds, thereby ensuring we miss out on that franchise player we’re all drooling over? Helping Minny get the best player of the draft and keep him out west, thereby ensuring that the East remains terrible? I’m freaking out man.

  10. You know they’re not even locked up for the second worst record? Philly can still tie them.

Imagine the Miami-Philly game on Wednesday if Miami’s trying to keep their 1-10 pick and Philly is trying to tie the Knicks… The final score may be 29-28.

  11. I can’t even imagine the frame of mind that allows you to do something that you intellectually know is wrong for some idealistic goal of always playing at 100% when there is no actual upside to it. Anyone that thinks light stuffing a couple of games for the greater good is somehow going to create a bad long term attitude and hurt the franchise is nuts. We are throwing away a better chance for a franchise player.

  12. And it bears repeating; in recent memory we went on a meaningless end of season 3 game win streak that fucked us in the draft.

  13. I still can’t believe we’re going to blame the players (well, player) here. I’d love to be in the room when you as a coach or GM tell the players that they need to lose on purpose.

  14. Hey, Larkin made a shot. Trade him, he’s clearly an idiot. No Knick should attempt to put the ball in the basket, to do otherwise is pure stupidity.

  15. I don’t understand why the Knicks don’t just foul Korver everytime down the court. Let him rack up 50 points in a quarter with a parade to the line, then we can’t lose. It’s brilliant, but Fisher is probably too stupid to do anything that intelligent.

  16. I am seriously taking some solace in the knowledge that we all knew that this would happen. This is the Knicks. Expect the dumbest thing to happen to happen, and happen in some surprisingly foolish way.

  17. If Larkin doesn’t airball these two free throws, he should be fined and suspended for behavior detrimental to the team.

  18. I still can’t believe we’re going to blame the players (well, player) here. I’d love to be in the room when you as a coach or GM tell the players that they need to lose on purpose.

Haven’t you ever been involved in anything in life where something was so obvious everyone in the room already knew that unspeakable truth without anyone actually having to say it?

    That’s the way tanking works.

If you can’t figure out how critical it is for the Knicks to maximize their chances of getting a franchise changing player this year and avoiding dropping out of the top 4, then you probably left school too soon to come to the NBA. The only guys playing all out right now should be the guys desperate for an NBA contract next year. I’m watching this game and it looks like the Hawks are giving less effort. They know the game does not matter to them, so they can go easy and avoid getting hurt. The Knicks have a massive incentive to lie down and they are paying like it’s game 7 of the NBA final. I’d say what I really think of that, but I’d have to use a politically incorrect term.

  19. Hopefully, Fisher spends halftime showing guys tape of Towns. That aught to inspire them to do the exact opposite of what their entire lives have been about.

  20. I believe Milwaukee is locked into their playoff seed, so maybe they won’t give a shit about their game with Philly. It’s a close game at the moment.

  21. Yo, team, I know I sucked all season, but I scored 14 points against a disinterested Hawks team at the end of the year. I can get a contract?

I don’t know who is to blame, but this is some ridiculously stupid bullshit.

  22. Haven’t you ever been involved in anything in life where everyone in the room knew some unspeakable truth without anyone actually having to say it?

Hey, don’t get me wrong, I would MUCH prefer we were down 20 at this point. And I ABSOLUTELY want them to lose this game and the next. No questions. I just think expecting the players (who have played their way to an outstanding 16-64 record to this point) is unreasonable.

  23. @31 +++++++++++++++

Didn’t Gang Green do the exact stupid thing? Jet 16 Titans 11 in week 15 and Jets 37 Dolphins 24 in week 17. A perfect cap to a horrible season. Is this a disease of some sort?

  24. I just think expecting the players (who have played their way to an outstanding 16-64 record to this point) is unreasonable.

But we’ve seen it happen before. Mark Madsen taking seven threes in nine minutes in a game (after not taking a three all season) is essentially exactly what we’re asking for here.

  25. But we’ve seen it happen. Mark Madsen taking seven threes in nine minutes in a game (after not taking a three all season) is essentially exactly what we’re asking for here.

Sure it happens. That doesn’t make it a reasonable expectation though. I’d be on board with it, for sure. I’m just saying that expecting it, and being so angry when it doesn’t happen, is entirely unreasonable.

  26. Didn’t Gang Green do the exact stupid thing? Jet 16 Titans 11 in week 15

When they tackled the Titan player just a couple of yards shy of the game-winning TD…wow.

  27. Maybe Fisher will turn it around in the locker room. Maybe he’ll start the 2nd with Cole at PG. That would help.

  28. Maybe Fisher will turn it around in the locker room. Maybe he’ll start the 2nd with Cole at PG. That would help.

Cole would just reinvent the Point Center.

  29. When they tackled the Titan player just a couple of yards shy of the game-winning TD…wow.

I can see Cole chucking a full court prayer that wins a game at the buzzer . It’ll happen. I can feel it.

  30. Oh well, whatever. It is what it is. They’re a cursed franchise. Now we just have to hope for some ping pong ball luck.

  31. I was talking about that earlier DRed. I don’t think anyone saw the first Paul Blart. Who knows why they made a second one.

  32. Well, maybe we can trade THJ in the offseason since he is obviously a closer at the end of the season now.

  33. Paul Blart Mall Cop actually took in $180 million. But the real key is that it was cheap to make. Essentially it’s just pay Kevin James and go. So the sequel will likely make a lot of money.

  34. Does anyone else think that it’s funny that Clyde keeps referring to “Karver” as in “The Hawks are looking for Karver from 3.”

  35. I turned the game on and saw the Hawks tie it up. About 30 seconds later, the Knicks are up by 9.

Stop NY stop NY stop NY stop!!!

  36. It reminds me of that line from Coupling.

“I am Sally Harper (in this place, put the Knicks). There is nothing in the world so good that I can’t screw it up.” Lead cut to three so Lance Thomas hits a three, they steal the ball and hit another three. Hilarious.

  37. I love Clyde and all, but first he counts off 3 seconds on a slow motion replay, and then asks whether the Knicks should foul when Atlanta is only down 2. I think he’s starting to lose it a little.

  38. No we don’t hate Galloway. He can turn into something. Hardaway sucks so when he suck-ceeds it is just making it worse. Hardaway will not amount to a good NBA player ever.

  39. It would be hard to believe it we hadn’t drafted Danilo Gallinari instead of Westbrook or K Love by winning 3 idiotic games down the stretch 7 years ago. Now it’s just insane. We never fucking learn.

  40. I’m sure we will all be looking back fondly at the last couple days for about another 15 years after we miss out on a career all-star by one pick.

  41. Well there is a bright side…we can now go back to rooting for the Knicks to win!

Not yet. They still need to lose one game to avoid tying Philly, too!

  42. Seriously, though, this was pretty predictable and doesn’t really change the odds all that much. It would be much worse if the lottery wasn’t weighed as it is. We’ll never know whether these losses changed the ultimate outcome unless we get the 5th pick, and even so, we’ll never know whether that would have been the 4th or 1st. It’s just not worth stressing about, especially when there is no clear can’t miss franchise player in the draft, e.g. LeBron.

  43. Who knows? Maybe getting Winslow at 5 or 6 will be the best thing for this team.
If we could nab Marc Gasol, slide Melo to the 4, dig up a few guards and then voila!

  44. we should have been a little more smart. our last two wins can hinder our franchise for a decade. not a sure thing but having a better chance to draft towns vs getting any other player in the draft could be a life changer

  45. Finishing last was important, not so we could get first, but so we would fall no further than fourth. In my opinion there are only four players who could be future stars: Towns, Okafor, Russel, and Mudiay. The talent level drops off big time after that, and you are offered an array of role players.

We may look back at this win and say it’s no big deal, but if we get fifth or later we will have missed a major opportunity to get a cornerstone in this draft. Yes, the draft doesn’t guarantee anything; but every move in the nba is based on odds, and the odds of finding a cheap star that you can build around are better if you get a top pick. I just hope that we didn’t just shoot ourselves in the foot the same way we did during those lean D’Antoni years.

  46. Who knows? Maybe getting Winslow at 5 or 6 will be the best thing for this team.
If we could nab Marc Gasol, slide Melo to the 4, dig up a few guards and then voila!

    We’re not nabbing Marc Gasol.

  47. Yeah, I mean, of course, things might still turn out well. But hell, they could have the 10th worst record and things could turn out well, also. The issue is giving yourself the best possible chance at things turning out well. Obviously there’s no guarantee either way. It’s all about putting yourself in the best possible position for things to work.

  48. Who knows? Maybe getting Winslow at 5 or 6 will be the best thing for this team.

    *tightens noose around neck*

  49. One thing that’s amazing about this idiotic franchise is that you can see the idiocy coming from miles away. I mean, every single one of us KNEW there was going to be some pointless winning streak that boned us in terms of draft position, and here it is, right on schedule. It is uncanny the way this franchise fucks up every single thing it does.

  50. Hey that’s not fair. He’s a good prospect. But I’d pick WCS there

It was less displeasure with a particular pick than it was the inevitable rationalization that we as Knicks fans would all have to undergo. Stockholm Syndrome is our thing.

  51. I am too young (22) to have seen much of any of the Ewing-era Knicks (especially because I wasn’t into sports when I was young) so I’ve basically grown up with Knicks starting with Isiah onward. Imagine how damaged I am by watching nothing but shit for ten years straight–when you stare into the Knicks, the Knicks also stare back into you.

  52. Sorry for your childhood Alecto.

OT remember when everyone was roasting the Warriors for not giving up Klay for K Love. Ha

  53. The Knicks will still have a top 3 pick in the draft. No doubt in my mind behind that, and I always believed in my heart of hearts that we will pick 1st

  54. OT remember when everyone was roasting the Warriors for not giving up Klay for K Love. Ha

To be fair I think Klay made a leap this season that you rarely see– all of his numbers are up across the board and he’s getting to the line in ways you wouldn’t predict he’d ever be able to before this season. Love was the far safer dice roll of the two but hey Steve Kerr is definitely a happy camper after taking that risk.

  55. I’d really love to see this interview:

“Yeah we had the 1-seed all wrapped up for the playoffs and so we just wanted to come out tonight and play spoiler for the lotto. We all really had to pull together to lose this one to the Knicks.”

  56. i think Silver should color code the ping pong balls we have to split w/ the sixers so it will be especially hilarious when the inevitable happens.

  57. OT remember when everyone was roasting the Warriors for not giving up Klay for K Love. Ha

Remember when Klay scored 9 points on 17 FGA?

How about when he scored 11 points on 19 true shot attempts with 4 TO?

I’d take Klay over any player currently on the Knicks, but I’m thinking more like

  58. LOL, really Jowles cherry picking bad games now? You are better than that. Klay is a two way rising star.

  59. He’s pointing out that him having a very good game tonight does not mean anything in and of itself, as after all, when he had bad games (like the ones he cited), you wouldn’t say, “I guess the Warriors should have made that deal,” right?

But in any event, yes, Thompson has had himself a hell of a season. The Warriors look amazing. I’m glad for our old friend, David Lee!

  60. Gallo’s averaging 7 threes per game since the All-Star Break, making 40% of them. It’d be nice if he was actually back to normal.

  61. I’d take Klay over any player currently on the Knicks, but I’m thinking more like

Every day I wake up, look at the mirror and wish I had Jowles IQ, mixed with my gentle side (pretty serious here).

PS: since Jowles got to Rip City, almost everyone and their mom got injured on the Blazers (Batum tonight). Knicks jinxing by proxy?

  62. Horrible win tonight, huh? But I kinda felt a little bit of pride. They played well. I keep on disliking THJ for body language reasons and for a distinct lack of interest on his behalf about everything that is not a shot, but I actually liked what I saw. I hoped (nope, I was damn sure!) we would have lost, but still I can’t be mad at this team, not tonight.

The Orlando game, instead, keeps haunting me.

  63. Agreed Brian. All in all, though, we’re probably in the position we should be in. My main points are 1) we couldn’t have done much more, tank-wise, I mean, look at the roster! and 2) this particular draft and the nature of the NBA lottery make it hard to get too crazy about what might have been. What if we get the #1 pick, draft Okafor or Towns, and then Lyles or Looney becomes the HOF player while our pick becomes a fringe all-star or worse?

  64. Also, the schedule didn’t look good tank-wise two weeks ago vs. Minny, so its not really that surprising that we caught them. Now if we win vs. Detroit and tie Philly, that’s another story!

  65. Sadly, this Detroit game looks like a sure win. Our guys have fire in them, while Detroit, well…

  66. He’s pointing out that him having a very good game tonight does not mean anything in and of itself, as after all, when he had bad games (like the ones he cited), you wouldn’t say, “I guess the Warriors should have made that deal,” right?

I mean hes had a great season. The man has had multiple 25 point quarters this year. Also i was never in that K Love camp so i was against that deal from the GS standpoint from the beginning. I was just saying that it looks like the consensus of “GS is dumb for not pulling the trigger” talk before the season was historically dead wrong.

  67. If you do something dumb and it works out well for you, was it a dumb thing to do?

My mind is blown. I dont know.
