2021-22 Game Thread: Knicks vs. Nuggets

The Knicks host the hobbling Nuggets to the Garden, as the Nuggets are missing a whole lot of guys, but luckily still have the reigning NBA MVP in Nikola Jokic and so once again, the Knicks won’t have the best player on the court (which seems to be happen a lot with the Knicks).

Still, the Knicks are mostly healthy (Noel might even play!) so I think that the Knicks can definitely win this one and get back over .500.

IS 56 WINS STILL IN PLAY? Well, if they’re under .500, that would be unlikely, so let’s hope that they pull this one out.

As part of our all-poll content…

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

Let’s go, Knicks!

I wouldn’t make that trade because it essentially makes us the Chicago Bulls…a team that probably has a hard ceiling as a conference finalist. I’d rather grow organically and sign a free agent in a couple of years that didn’t cost us the farm. Dame’s a great player, but there’s a reason why a team like Portland could never get over the top. He needs better players around him than what we would be able to acquire with his salary where it is, and we would no longer have the assets to acquire those players. It would just be a different version of the Melo trade.

As painful as it would be, I think I’d even throw ptmilo into that package if it would get the trade done.

As much as I like Dame (and he’s usually in my Must Watch top-3 with Jokic and Curry)
I’m on the fence and want to know the assets cost before plunging blindly in a trade,
for me there’s a limit to what I’m willing to pay for him.

He’s having a horrible year (age or motivations?), he’s never been a good defender even if he’s healthier than Kemba and his contract is massive.

P.S. I voted no, Randle is in my trade package more than some of the young guns…

Voted yes, because Dame is one of my favorite players in the league. And one perfectly built for the bright lights of NY. What i think is a problem, it’s the money. He makes a lot of money and we probably would need to send a player we wanted to keep for the money to work, leaving us with a very thin roster.

I’d we give up half our team and draft assets to get Dame, don’t we basically become Blazers East?

d-mar:
I’d we give up half our team and draft assets to get Dame, don’t we basically become Blazers East?

Yup!

d-mar: I’d we give up half our team and draft assets to get Dame, don’t we basically become Blazers East?

Yeah, so maybe it’s a no. But i voted on the first impulse. LOL

I vote hard no. There’s no realistic trade that would work for us plus Dame is 31 and currently having the worst season of his career.

I suppose it’s a fair question whether topping out in the ECFs is a good enough ceiling. Because anyone should be able to see that we are not winning a title or anything close to it if our best player is Damian Lillard.

They couldn’t get over the top because the greatest team ever was at the top. They made the western conference finals in 2019.

Also, the Melo trade would have been a good trade if Melo was as good as Lillard and played the most important position in the league like Lillard.

And the

***Not your best work…***

That’s because my best work is amazing, like Lillard’s.

Only thing that makes me hesitate is Lillards age.

On the asset we would lose IQ, Obi and RJ but RJ is bad and IQ/Obi should be replaceable. We would still have enough 1st round picks.

I lean towards no but wouldnt hate it if we went that route.

That was classic Randle dribble until 2 seconds left, then pass out to some unlucky teammate who has to further destroy their % with a quick heave at the buzzer.

Raven:

Yes, Julius, we see you.

cybersoze: Like CP3?

“Usually”, but there are things that age well, like court vision and shooting. Dame has hice range, but I dont consider him as great of a shooter, and he is more of a shoot-first than a distributor. Time will tell…

Defense has been pretty good, but the offense looks like some really talented guys coming together for the first time in a pickup game at the local Y.

Raven:

It’s to the point where I can’t even tell what they are trying to do.

Nerlens’s missed FT is on the Italian announcer, he mentioned that Noel was 10-10 for the season before the second shot.

I don’t know what a foul is anymore…burks just got a call that wasn’t a call five minutes ago

Max:

Yup. Breen and Clyde jinxed him on our end, too. 😉

BigBlueAL:
Another uninspiring 1st quarter.

Down by 5 > Down by 18

Whether CP3, Jokic, LeBron, having a player with elite court vision and passing skills is such a trememdous factor in running an offense. Who’s the last player we had with anything close to that level?

At MSG. Defense looked good, not much you can do about Jokic. Need to hit a few more shots.

Z-man: Whether CP3, Jokic, LeBron, having a player with elite court vision and passing skills is such a trememdous factor in running an offense. Who’s the last player we had with anything close to that level?

What about point-Julius? LOL

Down 5 against Denver General Hospital.
No matter what, Kemba in Kemba out, our starters always lose the first quarter…

There really are very few NBA players you can choose to leave as wide open as we seem to purposely leave a lotta guys

NBATV is shitting the bed so I can’t watch the game at the moment so I’m box score watching instead. How the hell are Mitch and Obi a combined 0-7? And who the hell is Zeke Nnaji?

They are ruining my over/under on Jokic. The Nuggets don’t need to play him to win against the Knicks. 😛

Z-man:
Run the scrubs out there with Kemba.

With the very “loud” total-benching of Kemba, this option is, well, complicated.

cybersoze:
Burks the starter looks to be a worse player than Burks the backup

I wasn’t sure Burks touched the ball in the first quarter. Hard to be good when you never get a pass. He was certainly 0-0 in the quarter.

Jokic casually shooting a midrange jumper over Mitch is not a good look for us.

To my eye, there is not even an offense to speak of.

Either one of our guys makes a good solo move, or we’re running back on D. Very strange. Not … a … single … good … pass.

Z-man: Not a great game for the Mitch fan club…

Keep cool, he now specializes on 2nd half play, like in the Bulls game.

Jokic with 17 PTS at the half, i placed the over/under at 40.5, meaning he’ll make 24 or more points in the 2nd half. I hope not, but i’m fearing he will. He scores in a way that looks effortless.

Hoping Mitch has a good second half. The worry over the lad continues to grow. He just doesn’t jump any more. I thought he had transcendent potential when he came in, with springs for legs. If he’s just another lumbering 7-footer, what’s the point.

And there he is with a layup, but no lift…

Ha. I have to rag on Mitch more often…

Edit: Okay, I’ll give that to Cyber with the carrot, not the stick…

Z-man: Mitch was 0-4 in the box score and now he’s 2-5…are we in a wormhole?

I have the staticians on speed dial also! 😀

Randle dribbled the ball straight into the Nuggets hands on that play. It was like a handoff

I didn’t get any votes for mayor which is BS. But neither
did Hahn. That would’ve been a flagrant foul.

Raven: I don’t think I can call out Randle enough in this game.

Randle plays better when he’s playing for a new contract.

Early Bird:
Randle dribbled the ball straight into the Nuggets hands on that play. It was like a handoff

What good does Randle think will happen when he does that? Does he think he’s going to split the defenders. Is he simply hoping for a foul?

Every time I think they have hit rock bottom they find a way to do something even dumber…

Do this (just for fun): IQ, DRose, Burks, RJ, Obi (at the 5 on Jokic).

And run.

Mitch & Noel keeping leaving Jokic open… he’s the MVP guys maybe try defending him.

I guess the narrative needs to shift to: If we start putting it together and everything goes right we can become a .500 team and compete for a spot in the play-in….

Z-man:

I’m wondering who’s available in the lottery this year

Every time I watch Jokic play I remember that some people on this board said they’d rather have KP than him

And yeah, the defense of the centers has been atrocious. I think this is now officially a position of need, because we’re getting nothing from the Mitch/Noel tandem

Campazzo would be a good guy to put Deuce on. And on offense he would have the height advantage.

Time to put in McBride if he’s available because we’re not winning this game

Raven:
New poll: Would you trade all five starters for Dame?

We don’t have enough draft picks to dump our starting unit

Wow. Down by ~ 30. Is it that they don’t know what they’re doing? Or is it that they don’t have the skills to do what they’ve been asked? I’m not sure now.

Some of these threes are of the bad luck variety, but I continue to think our defensive scheme is just way too permissive of leaving guys open from there and it’s showing today.

Jokic man…putting on a hell of a show.

Z-man:

It’s not even slightly apparent what they’re being asked to do.

pepper: tucking and rollin on the ” I need the next 10-15 games to see what this team is made of” or something like that…

Not really but getting there…

Problem is I keep expecting RJ to snap out of it and it just isn’t happening. That’s becoming a major concern.

cybersoze:
Oh December 15, please come faster

yep…moves need to be made…hopefully leon and co were playing the long game or something like that but given recent franchise hisotry…doubtful…

Obi missing that dunk feels like Donny missing a strike towards the end of Big Lebowski …

Reminder Part 2:
The Denver General Hospital entered the game with a 10-11 record.
They were 1-7 in the last 8 games before this one.
Right now they are NOT the Denver Nuggets.
Right now they are NOT a good team.

We lost by a lot and were humiliated at home.

This was the last game of the dreaded “hard stretch”.
We went 2-5 (1-3 at home), 1-3 after Kemba’s demotion.

This team is lost and Thibs is lost too.

KB Apprentice: Two nice passes in a row from Grimes to Randle. Denver’s not looking, but still …

Garbage time is like preseason…can’t red much into it.

I lost my over/under on Jokic because he didn’t play in the 4th quarter at all. That’s how bad this L is.

Crazy awful game. Neither the Bulls loss nor the BKLYN loss were as demoralizing.

In performance theory, it’s understood that working harder will not solve every problem. Periods of recovery/reflection are necessary. I wonder if Thibs gets that. For sure, I don’t know what’s wrong with this team right now, but our guys are always a step slower than the opponent from the jump. Again, is that their physical limitations or is it fatigue or indecision or what? I don’t know.

Knicks are doing two things wrong.

Offense, and defense.

If they can fix those two things, they’ll be fine.

Raven: If they can fix those two things, they’ll be fine.

That’s funny. 😉 At least we keep the sense of humor. 🙂

Well, we weren’t sure if last year’s great season was sustainable or if it was like in 2013. Now we have the answer. 🙁

I had a family event that started at 2:30 so I couldn’t watch the second half.

I am SO grateful for family events

I would rather have Jokic and 11 minimum players than the roster we have now. And RJ is looking more and more like a player that needs to get traded before a Wigginsesque decision is made about his next contract. He looks really, really bad out there.

At the risk of sounding like e, I think we’re firmly planted on the 25-to-38-win Orlando Magic hamster wheel of mediocrity.

Enjoyed a lovely afternoon in Williamsburg with an old friend (Diner is still great) and didn’t watch a second of basketball. Jokic carve us up?

The biggest difference I see is that if Randle is not hitting three’s, the offense really bogs down. There is no one on the team that command a double team consistently. I can’t see them maxing RJ, the way he’s playing. He doesn’t look like a SF to me and never has. This team plays with three guards most of the time, but still can’t break down defenses. Maybe we should be sellers at the deadline.

Well, watching Jokic work was worth the price of admission. Few thoughts:

-For the first time I can recall, Thibs sounds less than pleased with RJ’s work ethic. If he doesn’t get it together soon, I bet we see a reduction in minutes in favor of Grimes (who by all indications Thibs had some say in drafting, unlike RJ). He won’t go full Kemba for all sorts of reasons, but Thibs probably doesn’t feel all that invested in letting RJ work through this at the expense of wins.

-Just gonna keep saying it: I think our defensive scheme is fundamentally unsound in today’s NBA. We got away with it and then some last year due to ISM luck, but this year we’re seeing that packing the paint and trying to recover on 3PT shooters is just not a viable strategy. Most teams simply play too many guys who will hit open threes.

-I don’t know whether the comically low usage of our centers is by design or due to their lack of skill. Probably a little bit of column A, little bit of column B. Regardless, it’s going to be very hard to have a good offense if the opposing defense can largely write off a player on the floor at any given time.

-Randle is playing a lot better lately, which includes taking more shots at the rim. So that’s good.

dang, i thought the game was on tonight…too funny, i was just wondering why there wasn’t a league pass feed later this afternoon – ha, guess i’ll cancel the 8pm re-broadcast i was gonna record…

oof, tough times in knick land…

Overlooked fact, silent and smooth as a ninja Quickley is 15-47 (6-24 3P) in the last 4 games,
also known as A.K. (After Kemba).

Re: Barrett
As Jowles and others pointed out he’s going to become a “political” problem with the nearing of his next contract, we’re better scour the trade market to see what’s available for him…

Re: Randle
He’s playing better, attacking the rim instead of taking a lot of threes, but…

– at Brooklyn he had the infamous technical foul with 1:36 to play, followed by a turnover in the next offensive possession.

– vs. Chicago, he missed two FTs in the clutch and, with the game tied with and less than 1 minute to go, had the game-breaking turnover

– tonight, 3rd quarter, a Burks triple cut Denver’s lead to 6, Jokic turned the ball over (yeah!), Randle dribbled into three Nuggets and turned over (noooo!), Denver scored the next 3 baskets, we never recovered.

He looks a lot like 2019-2020: empty numbers (with a lot of garbage time baskets, see tonight’s useless dunk) and a meltdown when it counts.
And his defense tonight was a nightmare for the better part of the game.

For the first time I can recall, Thibs sounds less than pleased with RJ’s work ethic.

This is how things start going really south; I’ve kind of made my opinion clear even when things were going real well that I don’t want Tom Thibodeau having these kinds of impacts on this organization. (*) (On the merits, the idea of plugging Quinton Grimes in for RJ Barrett so as to win more games is laughable on its face, but that’s a discussion that hasn’t ripened and is for another time.)

I’m not sure where things should go. It’s certainly looking more and more clear that Thibs is a culture shocker and not much more (or as BC calls it, the Scott Skiles effect). I find his doubling down on AB at PG as marginally weird and eccentric and it’s not really working. I mean, it can work as a change of pace in spurts, but there’s simply no sense whatsoever in which AB is an everyday, 82 games/30 MPG point guard.

I think the only rhetorical commitment I want to make at this point is that the lottery is much preferable to a play-in seed, and probably even to a 6 seed. I still think their best path was to have been in the lottery last year — they’re clearly at least a lottery pick short personnel wise — and they still have time to “catch up” next summer. Obviously that idea doesn’t remotely jibe with having Thibs as the head coach, but I’ve never really cared about that even when things were going well and I really don’t care about that now. It’s a poorly constructed basketball team and I doubt all the component decision-making parts are pulling in the same direction.

(*) I mean, it looks like RJ Barrett doesn’t really like playing for Tom Thibodeau. and that when things go bad and it’s time to start the scapegoating, Tom Thibodeau is going to go (well, after Kemba Walker) to RJ Barrett. Is that where we wanted this to be at this stage in his Year 3? I certainly didn’t. (And I give exactly zero fucks about what “Thibs sees” by way of purported internal justification.)

It looks for all the world that the bill on Thibs is coming due earlier than even I would have thought. I’m not sure where you go from here. To me, he’s completely dispensable.(*) We’ll see how things go.

(*) Is he actually acting out a bit with the full benching of Kemba and the AB at full time PG thing?

For the first time I can recall, Thibs sounds less than pleased with RJ’s work ethic

really didn’t see that coming at all. is this the first time we’ve heard even an inkling of rj easing off the gas pedal? countdown to drew hanlen tweet defense in 3, 2…

RJ’s got an efg of .460. That’s not Thib’s fault. He showed some improvement last year, but has regressed badly this year. He’s been given a much longer leash than he deserves.

It really looks like they might be best off making a big deal for a star if only to get RJ off the team before they max him.

I’m a tad less nervous about RJ’s contract than some others because I don’t see him as having earned a reputation as a “max guy” around the league, even though for rookie-scale players that tends to be a pretty low standard.

At the time of the Wiggins extension, criticism was fairly limited to analytical types, which would seem to cut against my point, but he kind of snuck in just before the widespread proliferation of efficiency stats. Good for him.

I don’t have a firm grasp of RJ’s reputation around the league but it definitely feels worse than, say, Fox’s at the time of his extension. I dunno, you just don’t get the impression anyone would criticize the Knicks for holding firm at something below the max at this point.

I’m not against any sensible trade, including moving RJ — but Thibs shouldn’t get a single thing that he wants personnel-wise. The warnings of Karl-Anthony Towns are starting to resonate pretty loudly at this point. Honestly, if RJ Barrett’s obvious work ethic doesn’t work for you, it’s probably right about time to take a look in the mirror.

The delta between a contractual max and something short of a contractual max isn’t even worth the effort to discuss. It’s essentially irrelevant. An overpay to a motivated RJ Barrett isn’t going to hurt you.

ptmilo: really didn’t see that coming at all. is this the first time we’ve heard even an inkling of rj easing off the gas pedal?

When things start going sideways, Thibs’s nature is to alienate and scapegoat, almost always his younger players and then to try to lower his downside risk by leaning on lower-risk veterans. He’s done it forever.

At the time, I thought the Knicks’ offseason was bad, in terms of longterm thinking. But then Kemba fell into their laps and I was pumped about that, while still not loving the moves overall longterm. However, shit, even while I didn’t like the moves, I thought they would work out for at least one more season! Like I’ve said a few times, the Skiles Effect tends to at least last two years, so this is very, very strange. I am very surprised by how this is all falling apart.

things will get better in a few months…maybe…

what the heck, tuned in to enjoy the demise of the crimson tide – and, they’re lighting up the georgia defense?!?!

-Just gonna keep saying it: I think our defensive scheme is fundamentally unsound in today’s NBA. this was from one of the denver players after the game:
“There were a lot of looks on 3s just because of how much they were helping inside,” Nnaji said.

Dont think we have to worry about an RJ max contract unless he actually earns it which he is far away from now

I think RJ has enough shine to be part of a star trade package but not enough to earn a max. So that could work out well for us

Big Chiefin’ as Phatt Geo: this was from one of the denver players after the game:

That Denver player had his career high tonight, as so often happens to the Knicks…

🙂

A Point Guard! A Point Guard! My Kingdom for a Point Guard!

And for a Center that can score too!

I think RJ has enough shine to be part of a star trade package but not enough to earn a max. So that could work out well for us

Yeah, but this also feels unsustainable for obvious reasons. I’m already starting to wonder if in a hypothetical superstar trade, the other team would prioritize Quickley above RJ. I wouldn’t rule it out…and I wouldn’t necessarily say they’d be wrong.

DRed: didn’t watch a second of basketball

We will let you know when it’s safe to come back.

I just up and saw the terrible score. Vincoug might be right. (“ well, I guess Kemba wasn’t the actual problem.”). This feels like when Elf was finally out of the lineup in the playoffs against Atlanta. We all thought “finally” but the team didn’t play any better and maybe was actively worse. Now maybe our starters are better with Burks, but our second unit is worse and we don’t seem to be playing better overall.

RJ really is the most concerning piece of the puzzle right now. We all expected Randle, Mitch etc to be better, we hoped Kemba still had anything on the tank and none of it has happened, but these were outcomes we could live with if Barrett was still progressing and showing signs of becoming a star. Instead he’s regressing and right now he’s right back where he was in his rookie season, unplayable, below NBA level.

We knew we had limited upside with this roster and it had to come from Barrett with some help from the Obi / Mitch / Grimes group, but this is just depressing. It’s been 23 games and it feels like the team has truly fallen apart and nobody has any idea how to pick the pieces and build anything coherent out of them. At this point the plan of building slowly through incremental improvements is showing its ugly side, that is the fact that it’s hard as hell to improve with relatively know quantities and very little real upside on the roster. If the whole plan was to get back to respectability and then become a landing place for stars, well, I don’t think any star in their right minds would willingly join this team right now.

Max: There were a lot of looks on 3s just because of how much they were helping inside,” Nnaji said.

I never even considered it was a scheme, I assumed it was Randle being a lazy ass on D. Makes sense that they’d plan to leave a guy with a lifetime 46% 3pt average and is shooting 66% this year wide open in the corner time after time.

I’m gonna say it and I know it will make some people angry, but right now we look like when the Detroit Pistons got Blake Griffin, made the playoffs and decided to build around a non-existing core. Or when the Pacers had a good Oladipo season and went with it. This is a big issue.

***Lillard is a smallish PG, and that usually doesnt bode well for longevity…***

I’m not sure what you are referring to here. It’s not just Paul. Lowry, Conley, Rondo, Dragic, and Hill are all playing in the league at 34+ years old. And none of those guys have been doing the prep that Lillard has done: diet, conditioning, sleep, meditation… his process is legendary and his durability is in the top 1% in league history.

For a while there was close to a consensus on this board that you should almost never be decent-but-not-close-to-contending and capped out. Last year’s good vibes challenged that for a lot of people, myself 150% included.

We may have all been right the first time.

thenoblefacehumper: For a while there was close to a consensus on this board that you should almost never be decent-but-not-close-to-contending and capped out. Last year’s good vibes challenged that for a lot of people, myself 150% included.

We may have all been right the first time.

I also include myself on this because i absolutely bought that this team had a real chance to break the trend of mediocrity, but it’s just been too disheartening for me to stay on the positivity. Maybe I’m trending too much towards the negative side as the overall situation in the league is still relatively manageable, we’re just a game behind the world-beaters Atlanta Hawks and there’s a bunch of unreliable teams ahead of us on the east, there’s still a scenario where things get somewhat fixed and it’s not all doom and gloom… but yeah, the whole project seems like a failure now.

Randle is playing like 2019-2020 Randle.
RJ is playing like 2019-2020 RJ.

Most of the rest of the guys have been passable, but Randle and RJ have been bad and horrifically bad, respectively.

The rest of the team has been passable enough, but those two guys stinking out the joint has killed the team.

Also Alec Burks at PG is dumb and they should just play Quickley with the starters, and let Grimes run with the second unit if Kemba is not going to play.

Bruno Almeida: it feels like the team has truly fallen apart and nobody has any idea how to pick the pieces and build anything coherent out of them.

Start Miles McBride. There, fixed it.

It’s not that Kemba is good anymore, he isn’t; it’s just that if Burks is our best starter at PG we clearly have roster problems that weren’t solved over the summer.

Burks at PG was doomed from the start. Yes we gain size in switchability and some shot making but hes a SG/SF not a PG.

Start Rose or Quickley

How did Grimes look today? I see he got some decent playing time-was it all in the 4th?

How did Grimes look today? I see he got some decent playing time-was it all in the 4th?

He was fine, but it was almost entirely in garbage time.

I still think it’s too early to completely panic. They’re 11-12 and really should have 2 or 3 more wins considering the amount of double digit leads they’ve blown along with some tough 4th quarter losses they could’ve easily won.

But yeah the PG situation is a huge problem, Rose or IQ needs to start and Burks should return to the bench to lead that unit. Hey listen if they suck again this year they have their 1st rd pick and their cap situation in 2 years is still excellent with no current albatross contracts on the roster.

Remember how up and down and at times flat out bad this team looked last season until the 16-4 finish so again I think it’s still way too early to give up on this group but this has certainly been a very disappointing stretch after the 5-1 start.

We all loved the Immanuel Quckley pick at 25, but you know who would have been a bigger home run? Desmond Bane, he’s having a way better career so far than our beloved IQ, tearing it up lately for the Grizz.

I’m not a huge fan of trading for Lillard even though I think we need a #1 option. I think we’d have to give up too much talent plus picks. It doesn’t make sense to me.

I’m still not worried about Barrett. I think he’ll be fine. He’s being defended better and really pressing. He’ll snap out of it.

***Maybe we should all just focus on the fact that Frank’s back…***

Without that ball hog Doncic plugging up the backcourt, he should have a clear path to stardom this coming week.

Oh, I forgot. I have a question for the community. A friend, who is a regular in the show, “guaranteed” me yesterday that I’ll like the show Barry. But that’s one of the few shows that I’ve never seen mentioned here, I don’t think. So what do you think? You think a guy like me, who doesn’t like anything except Damian Lillard, could like a show like Barry?

Barry’s good. It’s won a number of Emmys, so it is probably in that “acclaimed enough that there’s no need to hype it” category.

I liked Barry but somehow haven’t finished it somehow. My wife didn’t like the premise.
