2021-22 Game Thread: Knicks vs. A Team Hilariously in the Play-In Tournament

The Knicks need to lose tonight, but at the same time, it’s hilarious how bad the Nets are this season, so I can’t say that I won’t smile if the Knicks win.

vomit-inducing migraines or explosive diarrhea, dealer’s choice

A Team Hilariously in the Play-In Tournament

Maybe they think english_knick is the commissioner and are aiming to the top pick of the draft by winning the play-in. šŸ˜›

So what do you think? With Mitch out, this is a good chance for Thibs to see what Burks looks like at the C. šŸ™‚

Knick fan not in NJ: I seem to actually have a choice where to watch, YES network or ESPN. Any comments which is better?

If you go for YES network, let us know what they say about the Knicks.

Kinda weird all the national heads are going with the “RJ 2nd half surge” storyline when the far more accurate one is the “IQ 2nd half surge” storyline

Deeefense!!: So what do you think? With Mitch out, this is a good chance for Thibs to see what Burks looks like at the C. šŸ™‚

Yeah, and Taj can be the starting PG. ;P

cybersoze: If you go for YES network, let us know what they say about the Knicks.

I did pick them because I never do watch them. I was curious. So far they said the Knicks were out of contention but still playing hard. They decided to highlight Obi Toppin in their introduction and showed highlights from him. Iā€™ll try and let you know if they say anything else of note.

I see Tajā€™s role as more of a Duncan Robinson kind of thing tonight.

And I have Clyde. Donā€™t need anything else.

just noticed that addidas commercial referencing Impossible is Nothing (got the ali poster hanging up in one of the boys rooms)…the marketing folks put a little twist on it going with: I M Possible…

nice…

So Irving can finally play in NY and they have Curry back. They should win with that. Note the announcers have said some comments on the Knicks, like we play slowly but have decent defense, but nothing especially notable. They did comment on RJ scoring well after the all star break.

Obi likes getting more minutes. Claims he learns by being allowed to play through mistakes.

Likely storyā€¦.

Hey, we made a great play out of a timeout, i’m switching to team optimist. šŸ˜€

They said that talking to Knicks personnel, the Knicks are excited about playing the spoiler role.

You can tell Ruocco does a lot of Nets games, he gets WAY too excited about Kyrie

Love the fast breakingā€¦

Would rather watch them lose 82 laying like this.ball is moving very nicely.

Sims is a man child. I am on the bandwagon.

Kyrie is the best ball handler I have seen I think. Not a fringe opinion I know but truly extraordinary what he does with a ball.

RJā€™s efficiency might be a bit better if he didnā€™t start every game 1-5.

These are the RJ Barrett quarters that make you wonder if heā€™s just not good. His start has been just awful.

Quickley still hesitates to pull up from 3 too much. Aldridge was giving him a ton of space there.

We should tell RJ there are 6 seconds left in the quarter every time he gets a rebound. That was a much more convincing drive than usual.

Barrett has been bad, but that was a nice play ending the quarter

Nets announcers are knowledgeable and fair to the Knicks. Commenting the Knicks are doing well inside and they typically donā€™t allow a lot of fast break points.

Weā€™re actually playing very good defense. Might have something to do with a certain moper not being in there

Although I agree play the kids, Burks is playing like a dwarfish version of Durant with those spinning two point jumpers elevating over shorter guys.

The Nets are playing like they don’t even care.

I expect a lot more energy in the 2nd half.

Raven: Although I agree play the kids, Burks is playing like a dwarfish version of Durant with those spinning two point jumpers elevating over shorter guys.

I was thinking about him, not because of this great game, but because he’s been doing all that he has been asked to do, and without complaints. He’s one of the vets i’d keep.

Yeah I get why fans might not like what Burks represents in terms of his age and veteran status but you can’t help but root for a player like him.

Iā€™m not optimistic for the Nets in their playoffs. That just donā€™t look very good, especially on defense. They gave up 66 point to the Knicks in the half.

RJ doesn’t have the best vision on drives. I don’t think he’s selfish, he’s just not great at finding open shooters off of penetration.

Sample size is meaningless but still curious about Sims’ rim protection numbers

Nets announcers are really noticing Sims and talking about him

Jericho with 12 rebounds, 9 points, 3 blocks, 2 assists, and 1 steal. Not a bad line for the third quarter.

Chants of Jericho from the stands!

Sims is raw but he’s not getting rooted out of position by Drummond the way Mitch and Nerlens do.

The way Obi elevates, if he can hit that shot the sky’s the limit for him.

“They’re only down 13. They’re okay, as long as they can make some shots.” Wisdom from 88-year-old Hubie Brown. Really great stuff.

Z-man:
Sims is raw but heā€™s not getting rooted out of position by Drummond the way Mitch and Nerlens do.

Very true, and I also saw him take an actual shot that wasnā€™t a dunk or a tip five feet from the rim. Robinson and Noel donā€™t do that either.

At the beginning of the game the Nets announcers talked about how the Nets have a winning streak against the Knicks but all the games were very close. Looks like they were prescient.

Did we really have bots posting on knickerbloggerā€¦? My logon required a recaptcha

just turned it on and the first thing I saw was the camera on thibs and that look of angry bewilderment on his face…and that was all I needed to see..

cgreene:
IQ unusually apprehensive and lethargic

Iā€™ve watched all of 6 minutes but heā€™s playing offense like heā€™s already scared of playing defense and losing ā€¦

pepper:

Itā€™s completely justified in this situation

Knick fan not in NJ: Very true, and I also saw him take an actual shot that wasnā€™t a dunk or a tip five feet from the rim. Robinson and Noel donā€™t do that either.

If he still has it, send Sims to Hakeem’s big man camp this summer.

Toppin needs to yell in Durants face after that ā€œbox me out, bitchā€

Just tuned in for the IQ three and the Obi stuff. WTF? We were up by 20?

Maybe I’m getting too high on the Obi supply but I feel like Quickley is the only guard on the team who looks for him the appropriate amount, very much including RJ

Wait. Did we already go from Randle to RJ to Obi’s team while I was eating dinner?

Is it me or does NO ONE rise to occasion of playing physical one on one Defense ā€¦ Durant ends up driving on Sims and Sims delicately back pedals and commits the foul regardlessā€¦ like get tough bro

KB Apprentice:
Wait. Did we already go from Randle to RJ to Obiā€™s team while I was eating dinner?

RJ doesn’t have to learn how to shoot. He has to learn how to NOT shoot.

Deeefense!!:
18 for 30 from the FT line. smh

Hubie also remarked on their FT%, without talking explicitly about its consequence. Fast forward 18 minutes and he was dead on.

Nets are working their scrotums off to get this win ā€¦ itā€™d be nice to say phuck you to them

McBride looks like a very fringy NBA player to me. Iā€™m trying to squint and see a good player but I dunno man

JK47:

Iā€™ll say it, heā€™s terribleā€¦ but Iā€™d love him to be great

Looks like the Wiz are gonna lost to the Hawks so it’s hard to root for a win…

JK47:

I will say his hook is obi toppin quick so maybe Thibs
Is onto something

Gamecast ahead of video feedā€¦ Thibs to sims GET THE BALL OUTā€. I feel ya pal

RJ & IQ combined 8/33. Next year’s “core two” gotta fix that.

KJG: Iā€™ll say it, heā€™s terribleā€¦ but Iā€™d love him to be great

I will fight you both.

pepper:
rj is a friggin ball hogā€¦I would never want to play with himā€¦

Between him and Burks ā€¦

You get the impression RJ’s stylistic idol is Kobe when he’d be better served aiming for more of a Shawn Marion vibe

You guys want losses but to see our team melt like this ā€¦ itā€™s not good for psyche (mine mostly) ā€¦ itā€™s not the first time this is happening to alleged cross town rival..ā€¦ they are turning this into a double digit win ā€¦ like wtfā€¦ one game gives me PLENTY of doubts about our budding stars ā€¦

RJ with a VERY Randle box score. 26% from the field (7-27), 61% from the line, but hey, he scored 22 points with 7 rebounds and 7 assists, so he good!

Edit: Oh yeah, also 18% from three (2-11).

RJ can go 7-27 and play 45 minutes. I must be missing some of those winning plays…

The disheartening thing about games like this is they probably convince the front office RJ isn’t ready and/or able to carry a bigger load and thus we shouldn’t trade Randle and/or Burks

Nets went small in the second half and their defense got better, even their defense inside. I have to hand it to Nash. He got the Nets playing better in the second half. Having Durant doesnā€™t hurt, of course.

RJ thinks he’s already a high level #1 option that has to take over and keep shooting. He’s got to get out of that frame of mind if he ever wants to become an efficient player. You have to know what you can do well and stay within that area. Each season you try to expand your game a little so you can up your usage. Right now he’s trying to do WAY too much that’s outside his range. He took 27 shots!!! This is a guy who major problem is shooting, lmao

Yea, his number 1 flaw is shootingā€¦ does shooting get better in game or in practiceā€¦ RJ says game

Perfectly Knicksy loss. The core of young guns certainly know how to bring the energy and should make 2022-2023 season more fun to watch. We can definitely buid on them but taking the next step through will require mixing in the right veteran leadership to mold these guys into smarter winners.

Yeah, this type of game from RJ on his year 3 hurts, specially against a team like the Nets that is not a defensive team at all. It’s really just feeding my fear that he just doesn’t have star quality at the end of the day.

He already doesn’t have the athletic ability that would give me confidence, like a Giannis or Embiid, so he needs to make up for it everywhere else, but he just never consistently puts together a good stretch of games. I don’t know, it’s just starting to look eerily Wiggins-esque for all the wrong reasons and I hate it, because I like the kid and I want so badly to see him succeed and finally be the one star we actually drafted and kept.

He will need to take an absolutely major leap to be worthy of the contract he’ll probably get, and that is a scary realization going into season 4.

So wait, after one season of coaching, the Knicks decided to pick up Thibs’ fifth year team option? This is a thing that actually happened by a basketball organization with brains that allegedly fire billions of neurons in them?

Thibs is now 76-76 as head coach of the Knicks. It’s really been many years since we’ve seen this kind of sustained winning from a head coach. When you consider he’s been doing this largely without Derrick Rose and Nerlens Noel, and forced to play so many young players multiple minutes at a time, you really have hand it to him.

Brian Cronin: So wait, after one season of coaching, the Knicks decided to pick up Thibsā€™ fifth year team option? This is a thing that actually happened by a basketball organization with brains that allegedly fire billions of neurons in them?

Well, based on the fact that Dolan picked up a two-year option on Phil’s 3+2 contract, with the season going as Knicksy as ever, to then fire him 2 or 3 months later, you can still have hope. šŸ˜‰

About the game, maybe it’s my fault, all was going well in the 1st half and then i fell asleep for the 2nd and you guys didn’t manage to contain the Nets. šŸ˜›
But hey, the L is for the best. Now we need to lose the next game or it was all in vain. It’s against the Wiz and that will put them behind us and even if we win the last game against the Raptors, they’ll at best be tied with us.
After losing in the KP revenge game, we’ll go to Toronto and can aim for the 9th pick if we don’t go for the try hard meaningless win.
Pels play Blazers next, so they’ll reach 36 wins. If we lose to the Wiz, they’ll reach 36 too. The Spurs are a more challenging case, but assuming they’ll go after the Pels to have homecourt advantage in the 9th/10th game, maybe they can win 2 games. Their schedule: @MIN, vs GSW, @DAL.
