2020-21 Game Thread: Knicks vs. Future Knick Terry Rozier’s Team

Big game tonight as the Knicks go for their seventh win in a row against a banged-up Hornets team.

Ball is coming back soon, so it is good to get them now.

Let’s go get that #4 seed, Knicks!

I continued to be impressed with the Knicks and Knickerblogger. The tone of the discourse is very friendly this year, and it is fun to care about actual basketball stuff.

Obligatory: fuck NeptuneBob.

Hopefully the Knicks don’t come out sleep walking today. A win tonight pushes us to fifth in the conference and that’s a big deal.

Overexcited for the SuperLeague flop I barely remembered this a game-night…

Let’s go Knicks!

From the last thread…

Deeefense:
I hope the Knick splay the Nets in the playoffs. It’s even money Harden and Durant will be hurt and Kyrie will be AWOL.

Harden is now out indefinitely. My gut says torn hamstring.

Random question while we wait for the game to start: who are you ranking higher on the all time list – Durant or Curry?

I’d almost say Durant because he’s unguardable with his height and more valuable on defense

Rose for DSJ & the Hornets’ 2nd round pick was the trade of the season – not just for the Knicks, but league-wide.

Edit – Not counting Harden.

our last Burks and Bullock were Trier and Dotson.

yikes, that’s some serious bad ol’ days, that wasn’t so very long ago…

The defensive stand with 8 minutes to go in the 1st quarter was beautiful. They shut down a fast break, set up on the perimeter and then stopped the drive. Playing “on a string.”

If we do manage to defy the odds and end up in 4th or 5th, Randle really does deserve MVP consideration. He probably shouldn’t win but should get a few votes.

Thanks, Geo. The whole quote, left dead on the last string, was

I’m with Noble on this one. We tend to be very cavalier here about churning through personnel, but our last Burks and Bullock were Trier and Dotson. I’m not sure that worked out so great.

The Hornets keep driving under the basket, leaping, and throwing a pass out. If Clyde were announcing for Charlotte he’d blow an artery.

This game went into the crapper fast. The Knicks have to run Charlotte off the 3 point line.

What is wrong with IQ’s shot. Is he just tired after the All Star break?

the babies have all made grown up plays. an obi post move. a knox hard foul to deny and and-one. and quick just doubled his rim attempts per 36.

On IQ, his 3 pt release is slow and low. Early in the season, he was getting wide open looks, which he was drilling. Now that he is facing more aggressive close outs, he is speeding up his shot and his accuracy has decreased.

During the summer, IQ should work on (1) quicker release and (2) layups to go along with his floater.

ephus:
Debunking my theory, Is just drilled a contested off-the-bounce 3.

Yeah, maybe he just needed us to call attention to it 😉

this is the noel downside. if you can put a genuine 5 out lineup in against him you can devalue his defense without getting punished on the other end.

If there was ever a game where we could use Frank’s perimeter defense this is it.

All this talk pregame about wanting homecourt advantage in the playoffs and the Knicks proceed to put out the laziest, worst defensive effort of the season in the 1st half.

Got here late and only watched a couple of minutes. For now, i say Rozier looks like the kind of player Thibs likes, what do you guys think?

DudesTown: If there was ever a game where we could use Frank’s perimeter defense this is it.

Lately he wasn’t very good at it, a lot more fouls than stops

John Hollinger, renowned Knicks’ troller, praised our perimeter rotations in his last piece,
but tonight we’re not defending well.
I don’t think they could shoot 69% from three the entire game if we clamp the D a bit, IQ and Rose kept us in the game but we need Randle and the ice cold Barrett to step in.

well then it seems like one of those incovertible 😛 truths – you may lose the game in the first half, but, the grass is always greener on the toasted side…

I think i’m seeing Hubert in the stands with a Knicks Bradley Beal jersey 😛

The loss to the Timberwolves was the most disappointing of the season. The Knicks not only lost to a bad team, they gave up a huge lead.

Raven:
RJ is mad we’re making fun of him.

You know I’m Theo Pinson, right? It’s my job to report.

d-mar:
Is RJ guarding PJ Washington? If so his plus/minus should be around-40

RJ +5 and Elf somehow …. +15

We were behind and are getting away in the 3rd quarter… this is new! 😀

One of RJ’s best traits – he never loses confidence — and deservedly so.

fixed that.

Payton looking off RJ twice leading to a missed layup then a charge. Hope we don’t see him rest of this game.

is the asking price for rozier a 1st? or would toppin+2nd work? i didn’t realize how much better rozier has gotten… and he’s probably pretty attainable?

d-mar:
Our new lives as Knicks fans – up by 9 points and we’re bitching (-:

Add: Clyde, “Knicks looking to pour it on.” When did we last hear that?

djphan:

I’m all in on Brunson, but if you can have Rozier for an asset worth no more than the 2021 Dallas pick, I think you have to consider it.

Just watching the box score while at work and saw RJ’s turnaround. Kid just not get down on himself.

Wouldn’t have touched Rozier with the offer the Hornets originally gave him, but to his credit he has made himself a pretty valuable commodity on this team.

Z-man:
34 threes and we’re still in the 3rd Q…who are these guys?

Thibs doesn’t understand how to run a modern offense!

the upside to trading for rozier is that a lineup with rozier… randle… rj.. bullock and noel… could be named the redeem team…

Surprise surprise … we play guys that never get minutes and their rotations are suspect.

ephus:
Knox has been trash on defense for the entire night.

Obi might get put in for defense. ;).

Knox gives us nothing out there when he’s not making threes. I’m betting that he’ll be on the bench after this timeout.

Rose will get the assist, but Randle made the play breaking down the defense. He got the Hornets into rotation. Rose passed an open 2 to get Bullock a wide open corner 3. Swish.

Gotta keep Bullock on this team. Not just for his shooting, he’s a really good defender too.

You could absolutely build a top 12 offense around Julius Randle if:

1) You gave him a P&R point guard.
2) Let him finish in the P&R 4-5 times a game to supplement all the iso stuff.
3) Had three shooters around him at all times.

I just want Julius Randle dunking the ball more and using his gravity to attack off balance defenses.

The fully healthy Hornets are pretty feisty so I don’t think they’re looking to trade Rozier without a ridiculous offer

Is the 24 second clock broken? Why don’t they shoot the ball?

Quickly needs to make the play there… then when he didn’t, most certainly bullock right … then … sad face

Randle with his mandatory offensive foul,
IQ this summer needs to work on using the glass more on his penetrations…

RJ is making a habit of hitting big shots at crucial moments in games. Huge 3 to steady the ship.

Watching Derrick Rose makes me want the Knicks to draft Tre Mann and have Derrick Rose teach him everything he knows.

Speaking purely about basketball,
I’m trying to imagine Rose’s career without injuries… the man can REALLY ball…

I must apologize for disliking Derrick Rose’s game, he’s been really good lately

The value we are getting from Rose in the deal with Detroit is unbelievable. Honestly did not think we would be able to say that about him, but good to be wrong sometimes.

I ripped the Knicks defensive intensity in the 1st half but holding the Hornets to 31 pts in the 2nd half was a helluva response.

It’s nice to have someone you can trust with the ball who can also get a shot off … Randle and RJ can be a bit clumsy … Rose has been that guy

Tomorrow’s game against Atlanta is going to be the most important game so far this year. I don’t know how we’re going to contain Capela and Young, but if we can beat them we’re in sole possession of the #4 seed.

RJ won’t get to play Cam Reddish tomorrow. I don’t like that.

SEVEN IN A ROW!
Never in doubt about this one,
after a not sustainable 13-19 first half Charlotte shot 3-20 from three.

Solid game, not perfect (2 24-second violations) but great defense in the second half and so many players contributing.
Rose, Taj and second half RJ are my MVP, but in the first half IQ kept us in the game.

Huge game tomorrow, both team on SEGABABA.

…and Bogdanovic, and Huerter, and Collins. Hell of a starting five. Thank goodness their bench has disappeared. Outside of Sweet Lou, who has 22 in 23 minutes so far.

Atlanta has players banged up plus some who have recently returned and have lately rested guys on back to backs, will be interesting to see if they rest anyone tomorrow.

Very good and steady win. I really don’t remember the last time we were on a 7 game winning streak. Let’s fry some birds tomorrow. 😉

I looked it up.
2013-2014 – 8 game streak under Woodson.

KB Apprentice: Did Elf ever play again after looking off RJ on that break?

If they also selected “the STUPIDEST play of the game”, Elf would bring the award home. Not dishing to RJ was stupid, but going to the rim and miss it makes it two times stupid.

Raven: …and Bogdanovic, and Huerter, and Collins. Hell of a starting five. Thank goodness their bench has disappeared. Outside of Sweet Lou, who has 22 in 23 minutes so far.

Two through four we’re tougher and well coached so I’m not too worried there. There’s a decent chance this will be the actual 4-5 match up so we have to win at home, and I think we’re going to beat them up all night. The problem? If Payton doesn’t show up, we’re going to be punting the first 5-6 minutes of each half.

Z-man:
I’ll be there tomorrow night, so 8 would be gr8!

Great game to be attending, hope you have a fun night and of course get to celebrate a Knicks victory!

Popper on Twitter: “Quickley and Toppin are out on the floor shooting now as Thibodeau holds his postgame press conference.”

BigBlueAL: Great game to be attending, hope you have a fun night and of course get to celebrate a Knicks victory!

so much pressure…

Knicks played RJ and Randle 40 mins and Bullock 38 mins. ATL had no one over 32 mins.

Sigh…at least they have to hop on a flight!

So it will be interesting to see which team winds up with the 10th spot in the East…TOR, CHI and WAS are essentially tied. I suppose IND is still in the mix. None of these teams seem to be tanking out of the play-in just yet…

I couldn’t watch the game, but from the box score it seems like maybe the Hornets decided to shut down the Knicks inside game and make the Knicks win by shooting three pointers; and then the Knicks did just that. Is that a fair impression on my part?
