I guess he's on contract in Greece for another 2 years, so we won't see him at all for a while (minimum 1 more year if we exercise a $1 million buyout).

What's his nickname going to be...above average-sized papi? Better than Pap smear. And that's an epic beard on Wikipedia. Jorts now has some competition in that department.

Some good Youtube videos on Kostas:

Defense highlights from Euroleague Final 4: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0FTS9fvm7g

Offense highlights from Euroleague Final 4:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6qurAC4BVw

Gotta say - since these are just from a game or two (and not like a collection of highlights over a whole year - anyone can fill up a highlight video given 2 years to collect them!) -- I'm pretty impressed. He showed a pretty good handle, spin moves, and toughness around the rim. He looks to have a pretty quick release on his J also. And the defense video shows what everyone says about him - that he plays hard and never gives up on a play. He feels like a bigger (but probably slower) Manu -- if he can even be 60% of what Manu is, this is a great pick.

Unrelated to us, but what a sh*t sandwich for Daryl Morey IMHO. Unless there's another big move to be made, you traded your #1 pick, Chase Budinger and Samuel Dalembert (both on GREAT contracts btw) for Jeremy Lamb, Royce White, and Terrence Jones? And you still have Scola, Marcus Morris, Parsons (listed as a PF), Jon Leuer, and Patrick Patterson? Can you start a whole team of PFs? That team is starting to feel like the Othella Harrington Clarence Weatherspoon Knicks.

Frank:
One thing this pick seems to indicate is that the Knicks are very much expecting to win the Bird Rights case appeal and that they really expect to resign Novak and JR (Lin was coming back regardless).Without Novak and JR, not getting more shooting would have been a total abdication of GM duty.

It also tells us that they expect to sign at least one backcourt guy with the mini-MLE (duh). Assuming it’s someone like Jason Kidd or Kirk Hinrich, we would basically be two deep at every position:

C- TC, JJx2
PF- Stat, Harrellson
SF- Melo, Novak
SG- Shumpert, Fields, JR
PG- Lin, Kidd/Hinrich, TD

We were already arguing about minute distribution last year- I seriously doubt any daft pick would have played at all, and we would have wasted 1 year of a nonguaranteed cheap restricted rookie contract.

I dunno- I think Grunwald has done enough for us to give him a little slack. If they love this Greek kid and don’t think there was a player who would play more than TD does this year, then I agree with taking the best draft and stash guy on the board.

That was exactly what I was thinking with the Papa Doc pick, a Greek man's melo; they must know that JR is coming back. And I really like Hinrich since he can play both guard spots and play D - not sure what his MV is.

Robtachi:
If the favorable Bird Rights decision gets overturned on appeal, do the Knicks have any sort of grievance they can file on the NBA considering their draft strategy was likely predicated on the idea that they’d be able to re-sign most of their existing depth?Gotta think that if it turns out they have to use the MLE on Lin and lose Novak/JR/others, they would definitely have gone into tonight looking to replace those guys with some rotational players who can contribute this year.A successful appeal would be a pretty huge screwjob at this point.

Howard Beck reported last night that an agreement to settle this will likely be worked out today or tomorrow, which will presumably let these 4-5 players keep their Bird rights, but not players in the same situation going forward, so NY will likely be OK on this.
