Robert Silverman: The “Ship be Sinkin’” line was during the ’81-’82 season. A year after they won 50 (losing in the first round to the pre-Jordan Bulls), they made a slew of trades – acquiring Maurice Lucas for Ray Williams, signing Mike Newlin and Randy Smith and the team collapsed. THAT I remember clearly

so my recollection was a year off about them winning 50. Holzman came out of retirement and coached those teams IIRC

Got two out of the three right on the trivia question. Forgot about the 1st Eddie Johnson. Great write up, as always, Brian.

This was one of my first Knick teams, and yet I utterly forgot about the late-season collapse.

Oh you should have left that question be. That was the first season I really remember of the Knicks and being excited about them and their future. Williams and MRR coming of age were a big deal. As for the question we had a board game for that season so I still remmeber who was who. FWIW I always thought the 79-80 NYK team won 50 games so apparently my memory is only but so good.
