TJ is a base year contract that's why the deal doesn't work in the ESPN trade checker. It won't work for another two weeks until Free Agency opens so it won't be official until then. I think the Raptors need to include a small contract too, looks like it'll be Maceo Baston (possibly Graham instead).

I put Anthony Parker in the deal, because I couldn't get ESPN's trade checker to work otherwise. No one else mentioned him in the deal, but just Rasho & TJ doesn't work with respect to salary.

As a couple other people have said: this seems like a win-win deal.

Toronto had to do something with Ford (trade him or change his mind, which seems more likely?). Also, putting O'Neal next to Bosh is not like bringing in O'Neal and expecting him to be your best bigman, he'll be part of a rotation that includes Bosh and (a hopefully improved) Bargnani. The Raps are a playoff team even if JO's hurt all year and a contender if he's healthy. A change of scenery might be what JO needs to get healthy.

Indy finally gets the PG they've been as incredibly desperate for as most posters on this board... Ford isn't All-NBA but he's a good starting PG whose won everywhere he's been. I don't like Augustin's chances of being better than Ford anyway, but saying we hope this guy can perform at the NBA level is different from saying this guy has performed at the NBA level. Ford's also 5 years younger than JO. On top of that they get a mid-first and a pretty solid defensive big is Rasho... If they get Anthony Parker as well than they also address their outside shooting issues in some way other than Kareem Rush and Travis Deiner.

As other people have pointed out, the injury risks balance one another out.

I don't know, both O'Neal and Ford are such question marks in terms of health, it's hard to say. it seems like it leaves Indiana superweak inside also, but it's not like they were going to be contending for anything this year anyway.

Jon, do you agree with Hollinger's opinion or not. It does seem to me that this is a good trade for both teams although I like it more for Toronto. As he notes, Ford was redundant there (they do need a backup now though) and O'Neal won't be a huge disaster even if he is washed up. I think Hollinger overrates TJ Ford a bit though. As a shoot first point guard he seems like the kind of player who PER likes a little too much. Still, as he notes, a noticeable upgrade on Tinsley and gives them more flexibility in the draft and cap room and probably a high pick next year when they trade Jeff Foster and Mike Dunleavy remembers that he's Mike Dunleavy.

I'm familiar with the WOW take on O'Neal, but watching him, I always think -- even if he's way overrated as an offensive threat, he does seem to be a huge impact player on defense -- not just blocking shots but off the ball as well. His plus-minus has been very good, even though his backup, Foster, is a strong defender, too.

If he's healthy, and doesn't mind playing a small role in the offense, I think he could make the Raptors a lot better.

"Just off the cuff, I think the Pacers won this trade and will likely be playoff bound. J O’Neal is a fantasy star, not basketball star.
Since I’m devoting most of my time to the draft, I’ll be interested to see what a full analysis would say…"

Hollinger's take:
