I’d like to go on record predicting a crushing defeat, with us likely down 20 by halftime.

    ??? ???? Jowles????? ???? ?

  3. Unreason

    My predictions:
Chandler plays better and longer than last game
Anthony and JR are more efficient than last game and more Knicks get involved in the offense
Kidd doesn’t have as many big plays
    KMart hurts somebody
Boston’s bench plays better than last game
KG still struggles though not as much
Boston’s offense stagnates again and they start to get testy and lose their cool

The Knicks kick the Cs asses from start to finish and win by 15.

  4. max fisher-cohen

yeah that first game didn’t impress me much, but I’m a big fan of Prigioni. I think he makes a big difference to how the Knick offense runs, just like Kidd. We all saw the difference Kidd made in the second half after playing limited mins in the first.

Still, it will be interesting to see how NY matches up now with the Celts’ size —

    Chandler -> Garnett
    Anthony -> Bass
    Prigioni -> Jeff Green??
    Shumpert -> Pierce
    Felton -> Bradley

I guess maybe Prigioni guards Bass…

Woodson said yesterday Felton will guard Pierce and Shump Green. Dunno if he was bluffing or not though.

dogrufus: If you knew our record when I predict doom and calamity you’d thank me

guess ill find out… let’s just hope that feeling in your bones is faulty, as going into boston tied at 1 would not be opportune

  8. mokers

dogrufus: I give you points for showing up and making fun of yourself a little bit. I hope this prediction is just as good as your predictions from Saturday!

  9. Spree8nyk8

What was the call there? Watched the replay 3 times and can’t see what they called on Chandler.

Mighta used his arms/elbows. But credit Chandler and Shumpert for that play. It was very pretty… it would have been anyway.

  11. AnonymousODG

Green looking to blow up again. Screw this guy. Hopefully he runs out of gas like he did last time.

  12. AnonymousODG

    BigBlueAL:
    Knicks offense looks AWFUL.

    Except when it doesn’t!

As for the previous offensive possession, it pays for Melo to test these guys in iso. He was drawing fouls left and right before being shut down right there. I’m happy with him going full-tilt balls-to-the-wall while Garnett sits.

  13. Nick C.

JR with a pretty spectacular one man show in the last ten seconds of the quarter: bails out a possession with a bucket, forces a turnover then nails the buzzer beater three!

  14. Hubert Davis

They just manipulate us into going ISO so easily.

Fortunately they can’t score for shit so it won’t matter. But fucking hell guys. Move the ball.

  15. AnonymousODG

Reading ESPN comments is hilarious. People listening to ignorant sportswriters who pretend that Knicks cannot score, much less win, without over-relying on the 3 ball.

Just shows you the difference between fans who read about basketball, rather than watch it.

  16. Hubert Davis

Wasn’t the point of calling TO w 2.7 on the shot clock so we wouldn’t hoist that kind of shot?

  17. AnonymousODG

Having Copeland out there without Prigs is a really bad idea. All Copeland is doing is hanging at the perimeter opposite Novak. With Kidd doing the same and KMart not an offensive threat, that only leaves JR to be defended. Sometimes it’s as simple as that.

  18. Hubert Davis

We are such a stupid basketball team sometimes. Intelligence & savvy is all these guys have on us.

  19. MeloDrama

I’m fine with isoball if it helps us cut out the damn turnovers tonight. Boston isn’t going to get many easy shots on rebs or in transition … unless we turn the ball over.

  20. yellowboy90

Since KG is out it might be smart to put Copeland in for Tyson. Especially since Prigs is in too.

  21. AnonymousODG

Refs helpin us out finally. Celtics’ defense has been stellar this quarter. Felton needs to start jacking up some threes when he’s got the space and can’t ge an entry pass to Melo. Celtics are backing off on us at the perimeter.

  22. max fisher-cohen

Nice to see the Knicks learned nothing from last game. Playing lazy defense again. The Celtics are not going to turn the ball over a million times again in this second half.

  23. BigBlueAL

Think the fear of a coaching mismatch this series in the Celtics favor is beginning to show up.

  24. AnonymousODG

Celtics with some defensive gaffes to help bail us out of a double digit deficit… gonna need one hell of a halftime talk.

  25. Hubert Davis

Melo you fucking idiot. When they send the second defender at you it doesn’t mean hurry up and take a bad shot.

Ruru he’s making the shaughnessy article look prophetic.

  26. MeloDrama

I would really rather they not drop this game, since God knows we won’t get a single call that first game in Boston.

  27. Hubert Davis

Good work by Woodson benching Melo for final minute. If he doesn’t tear Melo a new one for that 1st half he ain’t a coach.

Boston has one thing that’s working for them:

Goad Melo into taking a contested mid range jumper.

    Move the god damn ball.

  28. mcliff05

No ball movement, 4-17 shooting in the 2nd, terrible defense…and only down 6. Lets go!

  29. AnonymousODG

    MeloDrama:
That was as well as Boston can play. I’ll take down 6.

Yeah, that was the best defense I’ve seen from them in years. However, all credit goes to Woodson for that. Woodson having Kidd/Cope/Novak/JR/KMart for several crucial minutes helped them regain their defensive bearings.

    What a boneheaded lineup.

  30. BigBlueAL

    mr.JayP:
i missed the half. how the heck are we down!?!

Be happy they are only down 6. Celtics shooting 56% compared to the Knicks at 38%.

  31. maxwell_3g

    mr.JayP:
i missed the half. how the heck are we down!?!

zero ball movement. shaky defense. melo not shooting well and making poor decisions

  32. Will the Thrill

The TNT “analysts” pretty much unanimously chose us to win the series without even speaking about our troubles in the first half of this game, all because of Kenyon Martin? Weird (even though I know he’s been great for us)

  33. mr.JayP

BigBlueAL: Be happy they are only down 6.Celtics shooting 56% compared to the Knicks at 38%.

Smh. They shouldnt be shooting 56% at all…lol

maxwell_3g: zero ballmovement.shaky defense.melo not shooting well and making poor decisions

    yeeeea…that would do it…

  34. mr.JayP

Just when i think the bucks can get an upset win in MIA. Those douchy heatless come out of the 4th qt gunning. 12-0 run.

    freaking bucks…

  35. Owen

Speaking of in season power forward acquisitions, Chris Anderson just led the charge there on defense for the Heat. 12-0 start to the 4th, Heat blew it wide open….

  36. AnonymousODG

    MeloDrama:
8 turnovers and Celtics running hot from the field. Cut the turnovers, we’ll win.

Stop missing easy free throws and we’d be down 1. Anyway, Chandler and KMart need to set better screens.

  37. maxwell_3g

good job by shump getting us going. why teams dont crowd him and make him shoot crazy layups is beyond me

  38. AnonymousODG

Except for the awkward fouls, Felton is having a good game. Melo is having a subpar game. We need our defense to come back reinvigorated and lively and/or JR to have a good scoring game to win this.

  39. bidiong

    MeloDrama:
And just like that, a perfect half of Celtics ball erased.

That’s the thing, the Cs can play their best ball and the Knicks will not get blown out by them. They are that much better. I just wish we’d see the Knicks A game for more than 2 minute stretches.

  40. Will the Thrill

Say what you want about Chandler, but he is obviously injured and contesting a lot more layups than he has in previous games.

  41. maxwell_3g

felton is really playing great right now. and the refs have been kind as well. im sure i will be back to complaining about them soon

  42. MeloDrama

This Celtics team can’t sustain offense. It shot really well in the first half, but that isn’t who they are. They can’t suppliment a bad offense with offensive rebounds or through their PG getting them easy buckets so they need to rely on forcing turnovers and running. If we starve them from that, they can’t score enough to win four games in this series.

  43. elikint

Reporting from behind enemy lines here in Boston. Local bar has a smattering of Knicks fans but mostly locals. They insist on showing game the Comcast sports network. Never heard their color commentator before, Tommy Heinsohn. My god. He has the meanest things to say about each of the Knicks (after Chandler got fouled he said “one of the dirtiest players” ) Makes Clyde look like Tim Russert in terms of objectivity.

Third-quarter beautiful in terms of defensive intensity. Go Felton go. Jeremy who?

  44. mcliff05

    Frank O.:
I have the same kind if visceral dislike for Pearce that I had for Reggie Miller.

Haha, for me pierce is more along the lines of Zo. No one will ever be on Reggie’s level.

  45. AnonymousODG

    Frank O.:

Meh. Miller beat us in heartbreaking games when we were good. Pierce beat us soundly when we were bad. For me, it’s not even close. I hated Reggie Miller. I literally wanted him to die in a horrible accident.

After watching that fantastic 30 for 30: “Reggie Miller vs the New York Knicks” though, I’ve grown to appreciate that rivalry though. Just because I miss those days so much. Now I don’t want Reggie to die… just contract a terrible STD or something.

  46. Juany8

Steve Kerr and Marv Albert being pretty fair to Carmelo and the Knicks today. Refreshing to hear, even Barkley is saying the Knicks will win this easily and probably make the ECF.

  47. Hubert Davis

My faith in our team’s basic IQ has been restored. But it would be nice if we didn’t have to keep waiting so long to play intelligent basketball.

Does Shump even participate in the layup line

lol. i dont understand why he cant jump and shoot a layup at the same time. its either a weird scoop without jumping or a flying triple clutch brick high off the glass. and he never tries to dunk. maybe next year

  51. maxwell_3g

    marechal:
Garnett is disgusting. Trash talking even though he’s been humiliated this quarter.

disagree. you would love him if he were on the knicks. hes always trying to get himself going. i miss the old time nba where guys disliked eachother, so you have to respect him

  52. AnonymousODG

    Juany8:
Also this game seems to be over. Melo simply started dominating.

Melo definitely helped. But this was definitely Felton on offense and Chandler leading the defense and the Knicks as a whole keeping the Celtics to only 11 pts in the 3rd.

We just need one or two more dagger shots and we can take this win comfortably.

  53. Will the Thrill

This has VERY perplexing. Maybe it is because he is still coming back from his injury? I hope so.

Feel sorry for Novak if he reads this game thread.

lol. should we include some defensive tips just in case he does read it??

  57. marechal

I need a gif of that block on Pierce. These last 2 minutes were possibly my favorite of the season.

  58. AnonymousODG

This is the Felton we’ve all been pining for. “Playoffs” Felton who gets the offense rolling when it’s stagnant and calms the scorers down and makes plays and all of a sudden, your leading scorers are shooting nearly lights-out in the 3rd and 4th quarters.

That is what I am talking about. This, more than anything, is what will get us over the playoffs hump.

  59. bocker84

KG SUCKS KG SUCKS KG SUCKS!!!

…anyone else sporting wood when the crowd starts to chant that? …no? Yeah… Uhh me neither.

  60. yellowboy90

    BigBlueAL:
    Felton is saying Lin who????

    Sorry had to :-)

Wow I just posted the same thing and apologized in advance too on another board. Felton deserves it.

  61. smokinjoe

Man this is awesome!..I love the feeling of just slowly breaking the Celtics spirit..its like whatever they do..we have the answer..I saw it in that lazy almost nonchalant oop from Felt to JR

  62. ephus

I cannot wait another moment. I have to shout it from the mountaintops:

THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO BE A KNICK FAN!

  63. maxwell_3g

it is kind of shocking that both benches emtied this early. i know its 14, but the celts gave up with 4 minutes to go

  64. Juany8

Wow Woodson actually rested the starters. And the Knicks are going to be 2-0! We haven’t even seen hot shooting Melo or a 100% Tyson Chandler yet. This is pretty awesome.

  65. AnonymousODG

Steve Novak a whopping -16 on the night. lawl

He’ll still see minutes and hopefully redeem himself this series. Him and Copeland need to do something like get drunk the night before to get all these jitters out of em.

  66. llcoolbp

Ironically it’s the Knicks that have turned up the D in the playoffs and not Boston. They need to step on Boston in game 3 and really finish this team off. It looks like the heat will sweep. Knicks need to do the same and get stat back in the mix in the second round. Copeland and Novak shouldn’t see minutes if stat is healthy.

  67. johnno

Did Breen just say that that was tied for the fewest points EVER scored in the second half of a playoff game? Wow again.

  68. Kikuchiyo

Gotta give Felton some love. His feisty play with Amare two years ago ended the Isiah curse, and he’s quietly very important to this team now. Has a little of the ’90s Knicks in him.

  69. Kahnzy

I know the guy is a fool and all, but I’m really looking forward to Bruce Bowen explain how the “young and inexperienced” Knicks defeated such a poised and veteran Boston team by holding them under 50 points combined in both second halves.

  70. AnonymousODG

    llcoolbp:
Wonder how Barkley and Mitch Lawrence will spin this dominating performance?

To be fair, Garnett played like a complete idiot. And Jeff Green’s steroids got lost in the mail. Beyond that, Terry reverted to good ole “can’t hit the broad side of a barn” Terry. And Pierce is too old to mount a solo 20 pt 2nd half spurt.

He’s no Melo. And that’s why I’m liking our chances in these playoffs.

    bidiong:

    Chandler finished with a line of: 3 pts, 5 rebs, 1 blk, 2 to’s, 3 pf’s

… and yet we all know that is not even close to being indicative of his impact on the game. So glad something finally clicked in him tonight. I’d go so far as to speculate that it was him being benched at the end of the first game in favor of KMart even though the minutes dictated otherwise. Never saw that happen to Chandler before (and usually he comes back to have an ok 4th quarter after 3 qtrs of garbage). But so glad Woodson made that call. It was common sense, but not common practice. So I appreciate the decision all the more.

Now I’m just hoping we never EVER see the lineup of Kidd/Novak/JR/Copeland/KMart on the floor again. Gawd.

  73. Hubert Davis

I think the Knicks D is getting too much credit. That’s what the Celtics do. They suck on offense.

Chandler and KMart scored only 3 pts each but their impact on the 2nd half cant be overstated. They were both HUGE defensively.

  75. johnno

Cool stat — the Celtics are a combined 14 for 63 in the second half of the two games. 14 for 63. That’s hard to believe.

  76. jon abbey

    1) horrendous officiating both ways in the first quarter, WTF was that?

    2) huge 3s by Shumpert to start the second half.

    3) nice to see Chandler wake up a bit, he needs to keep getting better, but that was a step in the right direction.

    4) NY closed that game on a 48-23 run, from late in the second quarter.

    5) Boston sucks. Boston sucks. Boston sucks.

    6) it is essential to win one of these next two in Boston and close these fuckers out in 5 max. a sweep to get them back for 2011 woudl be quite welcome, but one game at a time.

    7) Kenyon Martin: team savior. dude is a man’s man, saved our season.

  77. jon abbey

    Your predictions:
Chandler definitely played better and (lucky for us) didn’t have to play longer than last game
Anthony only became more efficient when he hit his groove in the second half and somehow we are thriving without assists
Kidd doesn’t have as many big plays was spot on
KMart didn’t hurt himself which is all I care for
Boston’s bench actually scored today, but beyond that defensive spurt in the 2nd quarter, they basically laid down and died on us
KG struggled like crazy… it was like Chandler raped his mother or something
Boston’s offense stagnates again and they start to get testy and lose their cool — this was spot on

The Knicks kick the Cs asses (just not from start to finish but rather int he 2nd half) and win by 16 instead of 15.

Refs had our back tonight (not on Garnett mind you, I had no issue with any of the fouls called on him). But there were at least 3 fouls that could have been called +1 on made layups for the Celtics.

Which is gonna bite us in the butt on Friday. Will just have to grind out that win and expect nothing from the refs but egregious playoff fixing. And they’ll have a pretty intense home crowd (moreso than usual for obvious reasons) to deal with. It’ll be a test of character.

If we truly are a better team, we should be able to do it. Can’t wait.

Everyone who predicted that Doc Rivers would outcoach Mike Woodson, the sound you just heard was Mike Woodson pointing out the 47 points that the Celtics have scored in two second halves combined and saying STFU.

  82. JR Sec 112

Was at the game tonight. Shump needs to get an A+ in the recap. Besides those huge 3s, having him guard Pierce in 3rd quarter was absolutely key to turning the game around. I know he was in foul trouble, but still dont understand why he only plays 18 minutes.

as i mentioned before, he had shump play pierce instead of Felton. 2nd quarter, Celts ran everything through Pierce high post – Knicks had to double and left shooters open. Shump is physical enough to negate that. Celts took a lot more time to get into offense and as a result didnt get good looks.

Felton actually did a hell of a job on Pierce. Used his leverage, relative strength, got Pierce off balance, probably traveled on half his touches on him.

Great move by Woody. Shump was great, too.

Alright, apologies for the incredulity. Could be I’m not thinking straight what with the copious alcohol. But I don’t see how Copeland engenders spacing better than Amare. They don’t respect his 3 pt shot, and he’s not hitting his shots at all. At least with Novak, even when he is missing everything, they respect his shot.

Copeland won’t be getting the job done unless he starts hitting outside shots. Teams like BOS, IND, MIA will be shutting down his surprising (but less-than-middling) post-up play without effort. Amare couldn’t come back soon enough if only for Cope’s 5-10 minutes a game.

STAT is still the key to the whole thing. I know we’re going to disagree on this, but Amar’e opens up everything.

There is no one in the conference who can match up with him.

The Knicks are initiating virtually every set 20 feet from basket.
There would be ample opportunities for Amar’e with the Celtics overplaying, and he would bring an entirely new dimension with his post ups.

If he plays defense like he was the couple weeks before injury, and there’s plenty of reason to believe he will, he gives the Knicks a legitimate chance to beat Miami and win a title.

There’s no else in the playoffs like him.

Three point shots are so much harder to generate in the playoffs against defenses like Boston.

The Knicks issues on offense aren’t spacing, it’s initiation proximity that would allow the spacing to flourish.

Amar’e in the post, as a cutter and diver allow you to better maximize spacing.

Not gonna lie, the idea of amare coming back and giving 15min, hopefully 20min a game will be a sight for sore eyes. you know he’s going to give you everything he has…ugh…cant wait!

i thought they would win the series until D Lee got hurt…..shit maybe they still will

  95. d-mar

Yep, it’s really true, if the Knicks aren’t hitting their 3’s they can’t win.

Tonight 7-19 from downtown, final score 87-71. Yeah, pretty obvious they’re completely reliant on 3 pointers, and if they aren’t falling, well, they’re screwed.

    Stupid fucking NBA “experts”.

Agreed on Amar’e esp. since with Martin and Chandler he should never have to play center- play him the 10 minutes Melo sits and another 6 with Melo in a big lineup and he can make a real difference. He’s a very tough matchup for both David West and Chris Bosh.
Also- Felton’s played 80 minutes and has a grand total of 2 turnovers.

its fair to say Felton has been an upgrade from Bibby and the baron in last years playoffs

I know the lineup data doesn’t suggest that Amar’e can function defensively, but the Knicks defense is highly reliant on continuity and communication, and there is a trend where the Knicks defense struggles most after substitutions and obviously in the first three quarters of games.

You’ll notice that the most used lineups are also the best defensively, and the least used the worst.

Amar’e has the ability to properly function in a cohesive team defense, and he’s been so much more alert under Woodson.

He will struggle with lateral quickness at times and pick and roll coverage, but he’s also show a level of aggression on defense when he blitzes pick and roll and attacks penetrators that not even Chandler has.

When the game is slowed down, I really think Amar’e can be at least passable on defense, even with Melo, who as we’ve seen is good defensively late in games and when the Knicks need stops.

Offensively, there isn’t a frontcourt (non-Lebron) player that combines the ability to make mid-range jumpers, dominate a post-match-up, and the ability to quickly dive to the basket against slower footed defenders, and find seams and finish against a flattened out defense.

The Knicks are going to absolutely wear JR, Melo and Felton out if they have to create everything every game.

not only can Amar’e create, but he can take serious advantage of the strategy opposing defenses use on the Knicks without Amar’e.

serious question, how is it that the heat get to play every other day and we had to wait two between each of the first 3 games?

    Steph Curry is pretty good.

Denver defense absolutely atrocious as well. Typical Karl team in terms of the regular season style of play not translating in post-season, especially without the needed ball pressure.

    it just doesn’t work anymore.

The Nuggets should also be scoring a lot more on a bad defensive team at home.

The egalitarian approach is great until the noose tightens and you have to have an identity to fall back on. Or else chaos reigns.

Karl likes chaos. it just doesn’t work in today’s league.

Maybe it’s just a lack of shooters, but as Dean Oliver insinuated in our interview, the Nuggets are going to struggle without transition offense, and they can’t organically create transition offense in the playoffs because their trapping is far less effective (much more scouted.)

Its simple to me, the half court offense is horrid. They got lucky last game Andre Miller played like Melo in the second half or they would be down 2-0

You know George Karl played his centers for 27 minutes tonight, right? McGee played 14 minutes, bro. What do you think is going to happen when Karl pulls shit like that?

“Hey Corey, just keep taking those shitty three-pointers. Something will happen. We’ll win or we’ll lose. One of those. I don’t give a shit. Just shoot. That’s how Kobe wins, right?”

Yep. Andre Miller and Al Harrington were the Nuggets best half-court creators last year until Lawson came on in the second half of the series.

Yeah, but those bigs were really ineffective in a lot of ways, too.

So it’s better to have Wilson Chandler and Kenneth Faried at the 5 on defense?

But you’re right about overusing Brewer offensively. At the same time, they don’t really have any great half-court options to play off of. Dribble hands can’t be the staple diet.

yeah, GS went tiny. it’s funny how many of the best coaching decisions are because they basically have no choice because of injuries.

GS scored 35 in each of the last three quarters, wow.

Golden St reverted back to the Don Nelson days tonight which is funny since when Mark Jackson took over he tried to distance himself as much as possible from that type of team. Always talked about defense and adding big men like the trade for Bogut last season.

Yet tonight they won strictly by playing Nellie ball.

That’s what good coaches do. Jackson was much better than GK tonight. See if Karl decides he wants to coach this series (sometimes he does, sometimes he doesn’t), or take Bruce Bowen’s job.
