ummm..so..we’re poised to drop Brewer and pick up JJ..how does that make sense? Now..I doubt that either will help up in the paint..but after losin out to the Bucks for Barron, I would think that D’Antoni would want more size. And if we’re waiving Brewer, then why not drop Mason or Carter as well and go hard after Murphy or bring Sean Williams in? The fact that Brewer is being bought out does tell me that maybe Azu’s finally ready..which negates losing Brewer and gives us more shooting and the same perimeter D. No problem with waiving Brewer and adding JJ’s versatility and IQ on defense..but i’m just sayin it can’t stop there. Miami clearly out-sized the hell out of us on sunday. Billups brilliance and Melo and Stat’s effort on D saved us..not 2 mention Melo bein the 1 guy they had no answer for in the 4th.

Jeffries will fit in nicely. Its not like last year. He’ll have a very specific job to do and won’t mind doing it. And he draws a lot of charges. Charges are so important. Look at last night versus the Heat. We drew a charge against Dwade in the 3rd that forced him to go to the bench for awhile. Its a turnover and a foul! The rest of this season is going to be awesome!

Then yeah, that should make him unrestricted. The undrafted thing is interesting, because I wasn’t sure about it myself until people were debating about Fields (whether he would be restricted or unrestricted) and I discovered that it is the length of your first contract that determines your status, not where you were drafted/not drafted. Three years or less and you are a restricted free agent (so Fields will be a restricted free agent when the Knicks trade him next season, which is important because that is a lot better trade value than an unrestricted free agent).

Undrafted doesn’t make you unrestricted. Contract length is all that matters once you get past the first round. Players on contracts three years or less are restricted. What’s Azu’s deal? Is this his fourth year or his third? If it is his fourth, he likely is unrestricted. If it is his third, he would be restricted (Matthews of the Jazz is an example of a guy who was undrafted but was still a restricted free agent).

@14 That’s true, my point was just that coming off two years of not playing I don’t think there will be any kind of bidding war. “Restricted” won’t matter much.

Wouldn’t hurt to keep him, just to be on the safe side – when we could cut loose other non-contributors. But I wouldn’t be shocked to see him go.

Azubuike is an expiring contract, no? Either the Knicks think he really is ready to go soon, and play well, or he’s getting released, right?

I would imagine the Knicks would be interested in bringing him back next season. He should be a RFA, right? So they would just need to give him a qualifying offer and they’ll likely get him for another single season (which fits their time frame perfectly).

Obviously gotta hope for best and expect worst but I will say that if we’re going to try this 3 superstar model we will need to find cheap value elsewhere to fill out the roster. If Azu plays a little this year and he’s willing to sign a cheap 1 year deal to re-establish his value, that could be a good example of that strategy.
