Good stuff. My e-mail was not hooked up to Google docs, so I couldn't get in (I should be able to get in next time, at least), but you guys all pretty much said exactly what I would say - we need to give him a chance at running SSOL for a season with these guys before we make any judgments about D'Antoni. The Knicks hired the guy to coach star players, so they need to give him at least one season of him doing that.

I have been considering the list of FA's this summer. For this matter alone I think resigning Billups was a great move. He is a well respected veteran around the league and likely has a great deal more pull than Melo and STAT especially on the class of player you want on your squad. Secondly, since acquiring STAT we seem to have been very much improved in our medical dept. I must admit that this is part supposition based on watching games and the activity around the players and also a few articles I have read, but clearly we would have to be to maximise the return on our investment in STAT.
This being said there are a few names, some good some bad that may warrant some consideration and may be tempted to NY. I would hasten to add that these acquisitions are not necessarily likely, just that these players have 'Knick' related reasons to take a lesser offer.

Michael Redd - His name was floated earlier and I really like the idea. He has made his money and with a strong medical team with good players and a system that would allow him to gun from 3 he could make a strong late career resurgence.

Greg Oden - Perhaps the least likely, but his knees need tending to and it would be a fresh start. But is it worth Fields and the first we would likely have to send. Big Risk but possible high reward

Nazr Mohammed - Vet Minimum and high IQ

Grant Hill - D'Antoni and STAT - would add another veteran presence as well.

Leandro Barbosa - Phoenix ties and although taking less money is unlikely he could exercise his Player Option to get out of Toronto

There are others such as Ajinca and Chuck Hayes who would be very good pickups. Two outside bets are:-

Yao Ming..... - Long shot but at the vets Minimum he could exploit the NY market for China as well as take care of those troublesome knees.

Tayshaun Prince - UFA as well and part of the Billups era Pistons. You wouldn't blame him for getting out of Detroit and playing on a playoff team for another go at it...

He's pretty much performing on the level of TD, but for a lot more $$$.

@114-115 - I think it's extremely likely that the maximum salary will be reduced to the point that we might be able to squeeze one more max in. I don't think Donnie would have said "we can sign a max FA in 2012" if he wasn't pretty sure about it. Question is whether that's the best way to go. If there IS an MLE starting at ~5M and we used it on a player this summer (ie. WC, Dalembert (will prob get more than that), etc.), that would leave us with somewhere around ~9-10M to offer to a non-max type player (or 2).

Ha! I was going to answer for Ben (that he thinks it is impossible to get a max player, so why worry about it affecting the 2012 cap), but I figured I'd wait for Ben to give his own reply. I am pleased that I was correct in what you were going to say, Ben!

Frank: @112 – not a bad idea, but we better believe that Mozgov is the future answer at the 5 because his current contract carries a $3M 2012-13 cap# which would probably make it impossible to go after a max guy next summer.

I think it's impossible anyway. Unless there are major changes, in our favor, to the cap agreement we are going to be 5-6 million under a max contract no matter what we do. Plus if we do anything other than tread water with our MLE (if it still exists) then cap space in 2012 is moot anyway.

I don't love that we picked up Chauncey's option but it's not a big deal either way so at oleast it will give us a little more stability.

I personally think we should try and get Mozgov back. He is totally redundant in Denver with Nene, Anderson and Koufos, so he should be attainable. He has played well, in limited minutes, since the new year. (14.1 pts 9.6 rebs 59% TS% in 273 minutes) He is also a legitimate 7 footer that D'Antoni likes and already knows the offense so he can spend the entire summer getting better rather than learning a new system. I think if we offered our 1st rounder for him Denver would bite and since there is no real center's in this draft anywhere near where we're picking he would be a better pick up than almost anyone we can draft.

That would give us, with Turiaf and the addition of Jordan, three real centers to hopefully give us a full 48 minutes.

I think Douglas should continue to improve, he was a better PG this year than last, and if he can keep improving he should be a great backup PG next year and maybe a starter once Billups expires. I still have alot of faith in him, he struggled during the playoffs but was very good down the stretch this season and is the main reason we were able to stay above .500.

Bringing back Chandler would be a very good move. Maybe a hidden bonus of the Melo trade is a cheaper Chandler. Chandler at the MLE is a very good deal and he would solve all of our depth problems across the wing.

I guess the best offseason for me would be to bring Jordan over, trade for Mozgov, resign Chandler and then buy as many late 1sts/early 2nds as we can and just swing for the fences and hope for another Fields.
