Most would say Jennings is a penniless man’s Allen Iverson. As 5’10? 165 lb. one-man teams go, AI has no peer. Averaged 41 mpg for his career. All-NBA first team 3 times. League MVP. Not my kind of player, but 10x better than Jennings, who I would never, ever want as my PG.

Yeah, jeez, Jennings is not even in the same ballpark of Iverson. Iverson might have been overrated, but he was at least a legitimately good basketball player.

Knicks can only win if :"Famously, the stack will have to work from a foundation that would place Carmelo Anthony almost exclusively at the power forward position he worked so expertly from late last season."
Projected record: 45-37

Knicks defense was only good when Chandler was on the floor last year. Checks stats to make sure. Oh wait, we were wrong. whatever.

The Knicks offense had an offensive rating of 106.1 under Mike Woodson, but it only worked because Carmelo Anthony knew he was going to be the top option. Which is somehow different from earlier in the year. Oh, Lin and Amar'e played during that stretch, and Amar'e had a TS above .600 with Woodson? Whatever:
"the Knicks averaged 106.1 points-per-100; over the course of the regular season, that would have made them the fourth most potent offense in the league, and the best in the East.

There's a caveat, though: During that stretch, both Amar'e Stoudemire and Jeremy Lin were out of the lineup (FALSE!!!!!!!) which both removed any doubt that Anthony would be the team's top option (which had existed since Lin's emergence) and pushed him to the power forward slot, where he was far more effective (as he was the season before). The Carmelo/Amar'e problem didn't get solved; it just got tabled. Now, it's back."

After going over the few reasons the Knicks should improve from last year, the authoer provides this conclusion:

"The fear -- and, frankly, more likely outcome -- is that Stoudemire's post experiment is jettisoned at the first sign of failure in favor of a reversion to his familiar elbow face-up game, which looked creaky and fail-filled last season. That even if using 'Melo at the four alongside space-creator Novak at the three is the team's best bet for generating quality looks, 'Melo refuse it. That even if Amar'e is ineffective, Woodson won't send him to the bench because it would mean ruffling both STAT and 'Melo."

What the fuck?

I would be willing to bet major money that the Wolves and Nuggets won't both get out of the first round, regardless of health and opponents. I wouldn't be surprised if one of those 2 teams misses the playoffs even. The Nuggets made a solid improvement, so at least they might be better than 6th in the west this year, but I'm not even sure the Wolves got better than Utah, and Love and Rubio being out to start the season is going to kill their record.

Mike, good NYT blog piece, much more objective than the love letter you posted here a few days ago. Although they are quite different physically (Lin more speed, Jackson more strenght) I think Mark Jackson is an interesting upside comparison to Lin. I don't believe that Lin will be as good or as durable as Jackson turned out to be, but if (and these ar HUGE ifs) Lin stays healthy and improves, I could imagine them having similar careers.

Way back when, I was giddy about Jackson his rookie year but soured on him (as did Riley) after 3-4 years because he was a hot dog, maddenlingly inconsistent on O, rarely in top shape and generally slow afoot, and a very, very suspect defender. Look at his defensive ratings in the playoffs during his early Knicks years!

He was at his best in mid-late '90s with Indiana after he matured, trimmed down, and adapted his game to suit those good Pacers teams. Took a long time to get there, though.
