      Merry Christmas
Look at the games today and the NBA has the whole day covered so the viewer can spend the entire day watching basketball
I quite surprise at how badly the Lakers are performing this year but with addition of Nash I expecting a more competitive match today
It must suck for the Knicks players to travel all the day to LA rather than spend more time with their families at Xmas
If I was representing the the Knicks players I would much rather have a game with less travel time say for example against the Nets

      Z-man:
I wonder what your students would think if they knew that you went on record wishing a slow and painful death upon someone who had the temerity to disagree with your take on NBA basketball players, teams and stats. There is something very twisted about those posts that can’t be explained away by the “professional performance” stuff you offer. Would it matter to you if Jerry Sandusky’s former player raved about his positive influence on their lives (and flocks of them did), or if a Catholic priest was a pillar of his community to all in his parish despite being a monster in his private life?

As someone who is responsible for screening, hiring, and evaluating educators, I can say without reservation: if I became aware that a teacher at my school was the author of the posts you made in this thread, it would raise some character concerns about that person.

Calling someone stupid, ignorant, an a-hole, etc. is one thing. Being unable to express frustration with a nemesis on the topic of NBA basketball without resorting to crudest, vile, boundary-less invective is inexcusable for anyone professing to be learned abour anything important. Honestly, I feel sorry for you, and for the students that only know the sanitized facade you display to them when unthreatened by intelligent dissent.

This is total bullshit, Z-man. You have no basis to make assumptions about what I do, how I conduct myself, or how I spend my time outside of the board. Do you think that I actually want jon abbey to commit suicide? Get real.

And to compare me to a child molester? You can go and drink bleach, Z-man. I don’t care what kind of higher moral fabric you believe yourself made of, but don’t you dare come on this board and compare me to a fucking kiddy rapist. Fuck you for making such a foul and baseless analogy.

I apologize, didn’t mean to imply that you were a child molester, only that being respected in one’s professional realm does not mean that somebody isn’t a weirdo behind the scenes. All I have to go on is what you write here. If you’re telling me that you’re a kind, gentle, beloved soul in real life, yet take on the persona of a shit-spewing, know-it-all intolerant asshole on this board just for kicks, IMHO that is fucking weird. Seriously, don’t you think your standing in the minds of your students, colleagues, and supervisors would be negatively affected if they read your posts?

I have always endeavored to respond fairly and reasonably to your posts, and have weighed in many times in your favor (as I just did regarding the Kobe assist thing.) I hope you don’t get banned because I generally find even your more hate-drenched posts entertaining to read. Are you a great guy or an asshole? No way to know for sure via this forum, but my money’s on asshole.

I prefer slow, internal self-immolation via single malt scotch. Merry X-mas, y’all and here’s to Melo lighting up the Lakers and _’Antoni.

    8. jon abbey

so it’s not looking good for Avery Johnson winning back to back coach of the month awards, huh? :)

    9. Juany8

So out of all the lineups the Knicks have played for at least 20 minutes this year, Novak appears in exactly zero positive ones. That is not a joke, every single lineup Novak appears in for serious time has had a negative differential, regardless of who’s next to him.

Since half this board seems obsessed with attacking Felton, I’m going to take it upon myself to highlight the actual worst player on the Knicks, and one who has a bigger contract than Felton! The truth is Novak NEEDS to be just about the best 3 point shooter in the league to justify any playing time. Last year he was taking 10 3′s per 36 minutes and making 47%, which is better than it looks since the 3 point average of the league was lower than usual. This year he’s taking 7.2 3′s per 36 and only making 42%, which is kind of sad considering that the team as a whole averages 40%.

He’s one of the absolute worst defenders in the league, is a terrible rebounder for his size and position, doesn’t pass it off quickly around the perimeter like… every other 3 point shooter the Knicks have. He’s a black hole on offense and he’s a guy that can singlehandedly ruin your defense.

Most importantly, the Knicks hemorrhage points when he’s playing. The 2 lineups he’s used in most (Chandler-Melo-Novak-JR-Felton and Chandler-Novak-JR-Kidd-Felton) both get blown out by at least 10 points per 100 possessions. Flip Novak for either Kidd or Melo, and the Chandler-Melo-JR-Kidd-Felton lineup has been dominating the league at a rate of +30 points per 100 possessions. Switch him out for Brewer, and the Chandler-Melo-Brewer-JR-Felton lineup outscores opponents by 16 points per 100 possessions. Those and the starting lineup are the only Knicks lineups that have played together more than 30 minutes this season.

    10. Juany8

Actually I made a mistake, Novak has played in exactly one positive lineup that has played more than 20 minutes. It’s the immortal Copeland-White-Novak-JR-Prigs lineup. It seems the Knicks garbage time lineup has done an excellent job of lighting up the other team’s scrubs

    11. Douglas

Interesting. I don’t know if any lineups with Brewer are going to be a viable option anymore, though…

    12. johnlocke

I join filled with Christmas cheer to see posts filled with bile, bleach and venom. What’s really funny is that it’s the raging debates (sometimes tiresome and repetitive) that keep this board alive, but it’s also the same thing that drives some of us to the edge. I for one don’t think my posts necessarily reflect who I am in real life, although I generally try to not be an ass on both places. Juany8–how does Brew come out in those lineup stats? To me, he’s mediocre on defense and terrible on offense over the last 10+ games. Novak is submediocre on defense but can still hit an open shot and spread the floor.

    13. The Honorable Cock Jowles

Juany8: The truth is Novak NEEDS to be just about the best 3 point shooter in the league to justify any playing time.

I actually agree with this. He does almost nothing aside from shoot well. If you list him as a SF/PF, he’s a below-average player according to WP48 because he’s only an average player w/r/t efficiency this year.

    14. JK47

It’s pretty satisfying watching the Nyets regress to the mediocrity for which they were always destined.

      Joe Johnson – mediocre.
      Brook Lopez – mediocre.
      Deron Williams – mediocre.
      Kris Humphries – mediocre.
      Gerald Wallace – mediocre.

Add it up and you get one big pile of mediocrity.

    15. Juany8

      Douglas:
Interesting. I don’t know if any lineups with Brewer are going to be a viable option anymore, though…

That’s a good point, the starting lineup has basically become even overall (+.8 points per 100 possessions) and Brewer is a net negative when he’s on the court, but I do attribute that at least partly to his injuries. He’s also a min contract player and could be pretty reasonably well replaced by Shump, so it’s not a huge deal. Novak is signed at $3 million per year for 4 years, and at this point I’m pretty close to sure he should be the first person to get kicked from the rotation if everyone is ever healthy.

    16. Juany8

And we even agree on Amare’s issues! It’s a magical Christmas after all :)

You compared my actions to that of a child molester. I write over-the-top statements to jon abbey because I think he’s a mouth-breather and, honestly, I do not give one damn about his experience on this board or off it. If you think this extends to the people that I work with, the students I mentor and teach, or the people that I love, you are constructing a false analogy if I’ve ever heard one.

Yes, it pisses me off that I have to defend the entirety of the field of economics against Juany8′s bullshit attacks (for which, if he put his mind to it, he could potentially win a Nobel Prize) or to remind ruruland that like other “knowledgeable” basketball minds, he may think that he understands causality better than he actually does (i.e. “If we sign this player, I’m sure we can turn him into the all-star he’s never been”). But if you think that you know me because of what I post on here, and make outrageous comparisons that attempt to equate my behavior with the behavior of a convicted kid rapist — well, I respect your intelligence enough to know that you need no explanation of the sad irony therein.

    18. jon abbey

The Honorable Cock Jowles: I write over-the-top statements to jon abbey because I think he’s a mouth-breather and, honestly, I do not give one damn about his experience on this board or off it.

heh, this position in general is kind of awesome as I’ve been accused of many things, but not being smart has never been one of them. I can take all the insults anyone can dish out, but honestly some of your recent replies have come across as sociopathic, which part of me kind of likes as that’s how deeply I’ve gotten into your head, but a little part of me expects to find you waiting outside my front door one day, frothing at the mouth about the inarguable merits of offensive rebounding.

the amusing thing is I’m just doing the exact same thing that the first wave of alleged “advanced stats” tried to do, looking for problems in the existing sets of numbers which now include the wildly off-base and worthless WP48.

    19. jon abbey

so just now there was another example of where the smarter basketball play was the worse play in the box score, a variation on the “Kobe assist”:

2 on 1 fastbreak for the Nets, with Williams ahead of the play and Blatche trailing. if Williams tries to force a pass to Blatche to finish, he runs the risk of the ball being thrown away/Blatche not being able to handle it, so the correct play is to get the shot up and make Bass commit to stopping it. either the shot goes in or it misses/Bass blocks it in which case Blatche is the only one left underneath and easily cleans it up, which is what happened.

so Williams just gets a missed shot in the box score, but it was a better basketball play than going for the possibly easy assist would have been.

    20. jon abbey

that idiotic “Brooklyn” chant almost makes me want to root for Boston, and that takes some doing.

    21. Juany8

      The Honorable Cock Jowles:

For a second I almost thought this was meant as a kind of backhanded compliment, like you honestly thought I could win a Nobel prize if I just fixed up my perspective. I was actually kind of touched for a moment, and you even followed it up with a very reasonable counter to Ruru’s arguments instead of the usual spiel about how our brains are made out of bull fecal matter.

Not even a slight mention of drinking bleach in the entire post, and I would have been offended if I was compared to a sex offender too, even if I know what Z-man is talking about with people who live double lives.

    22. daJudge

I am actually rooting for the Celtics, who I have hated (along with the Cowboys) for 45 years or so. One of my best friends, who lives in the Heights, has morphed into an insufferable Net’s fan and he has made me irrationally hate the Nets. It’s really quite interesting. BTW, Merry Christmas to all, and I mean all of you. Where I live it is very beautiful and white outside. We got a few inches last night. I’m stoking up the fire, picking up my grand kids and getting ready for our boys. Go Knicks.

    23. Thomas B.

I’m giving the posters fair warning, I’m going to remove posts that are personal attacks if those things continue. It is one thing to call a person an “idiot” for viewing a game in a manner inconsistent with your own ideas, but wishing or threatening harm, will not be condoned.

C’mon people, it is Christmas day. And before you tell me about your faith and how you practice it, keep in mind that you don’t have to believe in a particular deity to show goodwill and decency to each other.

Get each others email and go to war there. It can not continue here.

Thank you and Merry Christmas to you all.

    24. Douglas

Thomas B.: And before you tell me about your faith and how you practice it, keep in mind that you don’t have to believe in a particular deity to show goodwill and decency to each other.

I don’t remember that ever being an issue…

    25. Thomas B.

Douglas: I don’t remember that ever being an issue…

I was expecting someone to say something along the lines of “Well I can say whatever I want because this holiday means nothing to me.” Some people just love to argue any point they can.

    26. Z-man

Again, my apologies, THCJ, that’s not what I meant to do.

I simply wish that you would make more of an effort to attend to the KB “line of civil discourse” and not cross it as frequently or as far as you do. You are clearly intelligent enough to be witty, sardonic, sarcastic, and profane without offending not only those you attack but those who read what you write. Nobody is asking you to like anybody you don’t like or agree with anythng you disagree with, just that you don’t go off the rails to the point that it evokes concerns about your character, justified or not.
