Yeah I don’t think Lakers at 9 is crazy. They’re at 11 in the Hollinger Power Rankings. Overall, while they’re still just at .500 they have a positive scoring margin while playing a VERY difficult schedule. Factor in that they’ve been playing better recently and I’d say they deserve to be somewhere around #10. It should be fun to actually have a somewhat intriguing playoff race in the NBA. Doesn’t happen often.

jon abbey: well, even if it is true, it’s a very Ruru-esque reading of events. what “helped lead to a competitive finish” was being up by 14 at halftime, so when MIA kicked the crap out of us by 20 in the second half, we only lost by 6.

I'm not ghost writing for Zwerling. My only point was that Melo had good possessions on Lebron, as he typically does, which was never talked about or juxtaposed with the "Lebron shut down Melo" because the Heat trapped Melo pick and rolls.

That sloan study is interesting. People are trying to pick it apart, with mixed results from what I can see. It’s interesting to see how different defense is when played by Sanders and Howard (and Lee). I suspect they are going to refine these results considerably down the road.

But I am all for the Sloan stuff. It’s a little crazy though. When this site started it was basically one of the very few go to sites for nba statistics (when did b-ref debut) and Mike K was one of a bare handful of people who cared at all about basketball statistics. That was what? 2005? Now there is an event featuring boldface names and billionaires and stuffed to the gills with MIT phds, all dedicated to basketball statistics (ok, some other stuff too.)

Just kind of amazing….

jon abbey: because is it really true? LeBron had 12 points in the 4th, he scored baskets at 10:33, 10:04, 4:05, 1:38, 0:23. I tend to think Zwerling is just wrong here, but if he’s not, then Woodson is at fault for not keeping Melo on LeBron more.

I actually think it is true. i dont remember lebron ever scoring on melo. But the same could be the same the other way lol

If I remember I think those baskets where off of transition and rebounds where Smith and Felton where guarding him on 3 pointers. Against Melo Lebron didn't drive to the basket and settled for long 2s. They usually play each other very well but I think Melo would get into foul trouble trying to guard Lebron for a long time.
