Based on Lowe's analysis, what should the Knicks do in their front court as the basic set? BTW, awesome article (thanks Frank) and it would sure enough be nice if the Knicks finally had a philosophy/strategy/identity on offense. It would be a welcomed change. Maybe this is obvious to some, but describe where STAT, Melo and Chandler should be spatially on the basic set. Would it help to have a stretch shooting guard in that set? Would a slashing guard disrupt the set spatially? Anyway, really getting psyched.

Some more numbers from Point Forward:

James Harden shot 77 percent on shots taken after qualifying drives in 37 recorded games, a shooting mark that’s both insane and the highest of any player who recorded at least 40 drives with any outcome (pass, shot, drawn foul, turnover, etc.). Manu Ginobili, Harden’s double, matched that 77 percent in fewer games, and Steve Nash (78 percent) edged it in a tiny 10-game sample. Keep an eye next season on Kyrie Irving, who (in just eight recorded games) shot 70 percent on drives and recorded the second-highest points per possession mark among all sampled players, trailing only Harden.

Those who shot poorly on drives included: John Wall (43 percent in 26 recorded games), Danny Granger (48 percent in 14 games), Raymond Felton (46 percent in 13 games), Klay Thompson (39 percent in 31 games), Monta Ellis (47 percent in 37 games) and Derrick Williams (33 percent in 22 games).

Chris Smith 24 Years old rookie with no oversea professional experience. He wasn't good enough to get an invited to Portsmouth invitational.
Also check out his awesome summer leagues stats.
http://www.nba.com/summer-league/2012/players/sl_chris_smith/

If he doesn't get cut, I'm 99.9% sure this is a wink wink favor to JR. Nepotism at it's finest.

His contract is at least non-guaranteed and so is Copeland's.
I say Knicks should bring in max of 20 player into camp and let the last two spot be earned through hard practice and preseason performance.

jon abbey:
I don’t watch much college hoops, but I thought Chris Smith looked good when I saw him in the Big East tournament. I think he’s got at least as much of a chance to succeed as Andy Rautins did (close to zero, admittedly).

I think it's 98% likely that they signed Chris as a favor to JR, but it's not like the dude can't play - he was a very valuable contributor to a team that made the final game in the tournament. If you read some of the scouting reports written during the final 4, a lot of writers thought his combination of defensive pressure and 3 point shooting could make him the key player in the final. And by the way, we had a similarly sized/skilled shooting guard on our team the last 2 years that until last year played like an actual NBA player: Toney Douglas.

College (senior year) per-40#s comparing Toney Douglas and Chris Smith:

TD: 23.5p/4.3r/3.2a, 38.5% on 3P, 16.8 FGA, career TS ~56
CS: 14p/5.2r/2.8a, 39.9% on 3P, 10.7 FGA, career (at Louisville) TS ~56

So basically TD scored more but had a much higher usage. Chris Smith also barely turned the ball over despite being the primary ballhandler a lot for that team.

I'm not saying that Chris Smith is great or even good. But given that he was a legitimate player at a legitimate big-time college program, the idea that the NBA could conclusively prove that the Knicks only like him because he's JR's brother is just so unlikely that they won't even bother. And c'mon, he's only making $473K -- that's "hanging out" $ to most of these guys (hat tip to Kenny Anderson). If that's the extent of the monetary cheating, it's about as mild as it gets.

I think the Teletovic thing should be investigated. Guy's agent says he's going to get the full MLE, then he just conveniently gives away $2M, no problem?
