To all those folks who might have thought me saying the Celtics would be better without Rondo was nuts…they’re 4-0 since he went down, and looking pretty damn good.
Not that I’m happy about this…but I think Rondo is a bit of a cancer. Why else would the Celts be constantly floating the idea of t reading him…?

    2. Frank

Per nbawowy.com, Tyson/Amare/Melo combo now up to +21 per 100 possessions (Offense PPP 1.22, Defense PPP 1.01) over 236 possessions. That’s only about ~120 min worth of sample, but still. This is out of control.

Re: Rondo, the Celts are a net negative with him on the floor. He presided over one of the worst offenses in the league, and general consensus is that he’s an uneven defender at best (because of effort). There is a lot of offensive talent on that team, even if it’s an old team. In that light, I guess it’s not that surprising that they’re playing well without him, even beyond the whole pride thing.

    3. Frank

More from nbawowy re: Amare — arbitrarily looking at the last 4 weeks (since 1/7), Amare has a 25 usage with a TS of 73.5. 55.4% of his shot attempts are from 0-3 ft!

Well, I”ll give them credit for beating Miami, but the other 3 games were home wins vs. Sacramento, Orlando and the road weary Clips without Chris Paul. I think we should withhold judgment, just like when the Nets went on their streak under Carlisemo by beating up on bad teams.

      Knicks are back!!!!!

So strong it’s scary. Monster team. Got to love it. Let it last.
      Watched both games yesterday(Mil&Sac)…good times.
Am grateful to have super functioning league pass(and a new laptop – thought the problem was bad feed but it was the old processor)
      .
@Frank O…Knicks lost to Celts in garden wo Rondo and won against them with him dishing a triple double.I think that’s strange.

they’re missing Sullinger too, not just Rondo. I’m not surprised they’re doing well in the short term, especially given the weak schedule, but they’re certainly less dangerous in the playoffs without Rondo, I think. there are also rumors they may move Garnett to the Clippers, that would seem to certainly kill them as a relevant team this year.

    7. flossy

Ugh, please no Kevin Garnett to the Clippers. I like rooting for the Clippers. How can you not like a team with Chris Paul, Griffin, Jamal Crawford and Ronny Turiaf (and Matt Barnes, superstar)?

What a tear Stat has been on. Its tempting to insert him back into the starting lineup but I think he would have less of an impact than his current all-NBA bench role. He’s developing great chemistry with the second unit and keeping him on the bench for the first 6-8 minutes gives Melo and Felton a chance to set the tempo, stretch the defense and get in an early groove. I could see giving Stat a start in the playoffs against the Bulls just to improve our rebounding and interior D, but I love the pressure and ‘Melo-mismatches’ that a Felton/Kidd/Rook/Melo/Tyson starting lineup provides.

And did I actually see plays run for Novak to get open off of screens on Sat? More please!

Nice P+T piece, covered the basics we’ve talked about for weeks.

Trying to cover the Amare/Chandler double pick and roll is like trying to defend an in-prime fly/ post route combination to Jerry Rice and Randy Moss, and with Melo on the other side of the field as, say, Michael Irvin with his defender well off the LOS. (Irvin couldn’t be tackled 1-1)

The only question becomes, does your quarterback ( Felton) get blitzed up the middle, which could force an errant pass, or does the defense put 8-9 guys back in coverage?

That’s probably we you can only run it a few times when they’re in there together, but Chandler high screen and role, clearing out the middle with Amare flashing or curling to elbow has a similar effect ( that was the unstoppable play I brought up prior to Amares return, the kind he was highly successfull with far inferior dive threats).

The Knicks offense may now be the most potent and versatile half court attack in the league.

The Knicks may very well have the two best rollers in the league, at the same time having two of the best post players, and some of the best surrounding 3 point shooting.

Moreover, when Smith, Felton and Melo are in the game, you have three bonafide screen and role passers/scorers/penetrators.

That action has so far opened up wide lanes for Smith and Felton to penetrate and dish for easy dunks with two premier finishers occupying each side of the basket and one defender forces to leave his man.

      It’s a little intoxicating

Just as we had hoped, Ray Felton is shooting the ball a lot less now that Stat has returned. Felton has taken a very sensible 9.2 FGA per game since his return and has even scored efficiently, putting up a .576 TS% with 17.2 USG% in that span. He has also shot .429 from 3PT and has 38 assists against 11 turnovers.

Obviously the efficiency is a mirage, but the 9.2 FGA is a very encouraging number.

Amar’e is just putting up insane numbers, 7th in the whole league in WS/48 (minimum 200 minutes played). Durant, LeBron, Chris Paul, Tyson Chandler, Tiago Splitter (!), Tony Parker, and then Amar’e. Melo is 16th, so all three of our main frontcourt guys are in the top 16 in the league overall, pretty remarkable.

What I look forward to the most now when the Knicks play is to see if Amare can continue this amazing run he is on, it’s just a joy to behold. Almost feel like I could fast forward the first 8 minutes of the game to when he makes his first appearance.

    13. Owen

Yeah, it’s good to have the Knicks playing so well. They are pretty fun to watch in the last three quarters too….

Rondo is a great player and the idea the Celtics are better without him is pretty insane. Not sure why one 4-0 stretch matters when we have watched him lead two teams to the finals and one to the championship. The guy was a flat out stud. I hope he comes back from this strong next year after the Celtics gut their team.

Garnett to the Clippers is interesting. I guess they move DeAndre to the bench? Or bring KG off it? Just having a frontcourt guy who can make free throws would be a big help. Not that they need it…..

Isn’t there a way to automate game threads in wordpress or something? This is getting a little bush league here.
