    1. Who’s going tonight? Just got 2 tix and taking a new lady friend! Gonna be a fun atmosphere

    2. Alan: GAME NIGHT!

AT LAST!!! :) Now let’s roast some celts! :P

Alan: And as a bonus, the opener’s on ESPN, which means I can watch it live.

That’s even better, Alan. :) I’m counting on your wisdom during the game thread, then. ;)

    3. cgreene:
Who’s going tonight? Just got 2 tix and taking a new lady friend! Gonna be a fun atmosphere

I’m going, I think MSG will be crazy loud.

It’s so nice to be relevant again!

    4. About the wins prediction thread, we have 143 votes and those votes say that:
      – we’ll probably fall in the range 41-52 wins (this comes from 3 options on the poll, that got 123 votes – 86%)

From the 20 votes left, only 5 people think we’ll end with a losing record (36-40) and no one believes we’ll be below 36.

Above 52 wins, we have 10 votes on the 53-55 range, Brian is alone on the 56-57 range, but there’s 3 votes on the 58-60 range, and even more optimistic we have ONE PERSON that thinks we’ll win Over 60. Since it’s not swift, who’s the most optimist this season?

    5. I for one am shocked that Russell “Triple Double” Westbrook, a player who plays only one way and refuses to change regardless of who his teammates are and has clearly been on a severe downturn since winning MVP regardless of what his counting stats say, sucked in his debut with the Lakers. And you could knock me over with a feather with how stunned I am that the Lakers lost, they added so much talent in the offseason they practically a superteam.

Also, I missed the discussion yesterday but I voted for 41-45 wins though I would not be surprised to go over that. I think 45-47 wins is right around where we’ll land barring catastrophic injures/trades.

    6. I love the matchup tonight not just because it’s always fun going up against Boston but also because the Celtics are an interesting test case to me for the questions around how “lucky” the Knicks got last year (albeit just one game of course).

The Celtics are in that class of teams that everyone thought was more talented than the Knicks coming into last year but their season was in pretty much a constant state of disruption in a way the Knicks season never was. They played deep into the bubble obviously and had some serious carryover from that – Kemba out to start the year, Brown and Smart dealing with lingering issues all season, you could even put Brad Stevens burnout in this category. Their best player got COVID and on top of the games he missed was reportedly having breathing issues for months afterwards. Significant injury time missed for basically every one of their other main guys – Brown missed 15 games plus the playoffs, Robert Williams missed 20 games, Smart missed 25, Kemba missed 30.

It’s not that the Knicks didn’t face any disruption of their own, because they did, but that in a lot of ways we managed to have a fairly normal season last year while teams like the Celtics the whole season was like a slow motion car crash. Even though the Knicks won 5 more than them last year and (in my opinion) upgraded more in the offseason I know most people are picking the Celtics to be ahead of the Knicks this season. I see them more on a pretty similar level but I also see clearly why just the simple equation of Knicks better last year plus more external improvements does not equal Knicks better this year. Very excited for the game.

    7. the main thing i learned yesterday was that george hill and lamarcus aldridge are ready for the book club circuit. oh and jordan nwora might be more than just a preseason wunderkind.

    8. I’m going tonight with a friend, my sister, and her Celtics fan boyfriend (no word yet on if he’s braving the crowd and wearing some Celtics gear). Counting down the hours. Gonna be a mad house.

Agree with stam that the matchup is a good barometer for a number of Knicks related things. If we’re actually better than we were last year, we should be able to hang with them in both head-to-head matchups and the standings all year.

With Horford out, our old friend Enes Kanter figures to get a lot of minutes. We should definitely be thinking about how to make those minutes as painful as possible defensively for them. What’s the best way to do that? Mitch PnR every time down the floor? Not sure he can handle that conditioning wise yet. Toppin/Randle lineup? Possibly, but might leave us a bit vulnerable on the boards to the extent that matters. Rose, Kemba, and Barrett should attack the paint ruthlessly against him.

    9. the main thing i learned yesterday was that george hill and lamarcus aldridge are ready for the book club circuit.

Yeah, and I hope there’s room for Paul Millsap too.

    10. for all those birthday’s i missed – happy happy birthday :)

for win total, i’m feeling anything between 46 and 52 wins is a reasonable expectation…my final answer is 48 wins…

    11. did some VA exams yesterday, got poked and prodded a bit initially around my body…afterwards spoke to the shrink, man, that shit was a mindfuck…i understand doctor whomever in his new balance sneakers is just doing their job, asking questions from a script…i actually got the impression that they were being cool with me…still, i have never wanted to leave another person’s presence as much as i wanted to get the fuck out their office as fast as possible…

unreason, if you’re out there – i’d like to get your thoughts on engaging in therapy…to me right now, traumatic type life bullshit is like nuclear waste that should be buried as deeply as possible…

sure, there’s a very a good chance that stuff will creep back to the surface on occasion and you’ll have to deal with it – but, taking it out to examine and play with, yeah, i don’t know about the wisdom of that…

    12. @YaronWeitzman
Jaylen Brown, who’s recovering from COVID-19, says he had mild symptoms but did have some difficult breathing. Says that was “most concerning.”

Both Brown and Tatum have had breathing problems since testing positive. This virus is so rough. That said:

      @celtics
#NEBHInjuryReport update: Jaylen Brown will play in tonight’s season-opener at MSG.

Coach Udoka says Jaylen looks “impressively fine” from a physical standpoint considering how he’s only been out of isolation for a short time.

    13. It’s been a while since the Knicks have been competitive with Celtics, maybe even better again this year. Let’s kick their ass tonight and get the season off to a good start.

I watched the Lakers Warriors last night, very entertaining. 3 thoughts:

      – Man, the Lakers looked Old. I get it’s only the first game , but it is a long season and these guys won’t be any younger in May/June.

      – Westbrook was a complete tire fire and looks like a horrible fit for that team

      – The passing by Golden State was really beautiful. Harlem Globetrotters level

    14. Taking my kid to the game tonight! Wish us luck that it doesn’t end up being a super spreader event!

    15. MJ didn’t change teammates, nothing, it was all steady

Not true at all. Jordan and Pippen were the only players on both the 1991 and 1998 squads. The one constant is that Jordan was the best player on earth.

    16. geo: unreason, if you’re out there – i’d like to get your thoughts on engaging in therapy…to me right now, traumatic type life bullshit is like nuclear waste that should be buried as deeply as possible…

Whether it’s a good idea to engage depends on how good the treatment is, how ready you are for it, and how much you need it. Your sense that it isn’t guaranteed to be a good idea is right. Brief less effective interventions (e.g. just talking about stuff) with people who aren’t ready (e.g. don’t have good support around them and/or aren’t up for it) can bring up things and not help to deal with them effectively. And not engaging with stuff in therapy doesn’t inevitably lead to major problems, though it definitely does sometimes.

On the other hand, trauma and related anxiety are among the best understood and most treatable issues that psychiatrists and psychotherapists deal with. Chances are not small that a VA doc and team are doing effective things and able to make sure that you’re properly prepared and supported throughout treatment. But there’s no guarantee that’s the case just because they’re at the VA. I trained at both a VA PTSD center and a VA hospital. Some trauma care was really great. Some not. Generally it tends to be good.

I suggest looking into the details of the treatment being offered and see how evidence-based it is – not just in name, but as they actually practice it. And ask yourself if you’re in a good position to handle dealing with disturbing and unsettling stuff right now. And finally, how much are you experiencing problems that it’s safe to assume would be helped by an effective treatment. Then weigh all those pieces of information and go with your gut.

It’s hard to say more than that without knowing more about your situation. I wish I could be more help with your decision. I wish you the very best.

    17. Predictions:
      1) Knicke suprise on up side. 52 wins.
      2) Phila drops from #1 seed to play in tournament.
      3) Miami wins East.
      4) Lakers win West.
      5) Lebron gets 5th ring.

    18. Game Night!
I’m elated and worried at the same time, it’s the first time in a while that we start a season with some kind of expectations…

The Celtics with their dynamic wing scorers are exactly the kind of team that can test our new configuration…

      In Thibs We Trust

    19. The Honorable Cock Jowles: Not true at all. Jordan and Pippen were the only players on both the 1991 and 1998 squads. The one constant is that Jordan was the best player on earth.

Jowles, i was here for the 90s, and this is what i meant – there’s 2 periods, the before baseball and the after baseball. Let’s analyze the players with the most minutes in each period.
      (before baseball)
      1990-91 – 1) Jordan; 2) Pippen; 3) Grant; 4) Cartwright; 5) Paxson; 6) Armstrong; 7) King;
      1991-92 – 1) Jordan; 2) Pippen; 3) Grant; 4) Paxson; 5) Cartwright; 6) Armstrong; 7) King;
      1992-93 – 1) Jordan; 2) Pippen; 3) Grant; 4) Armstrong; 5) Cartwright; 6) Williams; 7) Paxson;
      (after baseball)
      1995-96 – 1) Jordan; 2) Pippen; 3) Rodman; 4) Longley; 5) Kukoc; 6) Harper; 7) Kerr;
      1996-97 – 1) Jordan; 2) Pippen; 3) Rodman; 4) Kukoc; 5) Longley; 6) Harper; 7) Kerr;
      1997-98 – 1) Jordan; 2) Pippen; 3) Rodman; 4) Kukoc; 5) Longley; 6) Harper; 7) Kerr;
      See what i mean?

    20. Thanks also to Raven and geo for the wishes!
      Happy BDay to Barrettcuda!
How possible is to get to the 50s this season?
As possible as 3 regulars having bday the same day!
6 more hours for the Good Stuff!
      Very Pumped!
      I expect Pandemonium Atmosphere!

    21. ***Jordan and Pippen were the only players on both the 1991 and 1998 squads. The one constant is that Jordan was the best player on earth.***

They were the only players on both the ‘93 team and the ‘96 team, even. The Bulls swapped out the entire roster during MJ’s hiatus for other guys to fill the same space around Jordan. Paxton became Kerr, Grant became Rodman, Cartwright became Longley, etc… It was almost as if chemistry and other human considerations didn’t matter at all.

    22. bless you unreason, for your words and the work you have done to help others try to live a better life…you chose a difficult, but very rewarding i would imagine, career path…as much as the exam sucked for me, i can’t imagine i made it too pleasant of an experience for the examiner :)

toughest part to speak on – i see shit (black shadows that move like ghosts), yeah, that’s not something you generally wanna share with any other humans :)

i’m gonna wait until this current review and rating process is finished…i would though like to address trigger points that i encounter and how to possibly mitigate the chances or effects of any triggering type event…the examiner mentioned possibly using my current healthcare plan to seek help outside the VA system…the time will come…

    23. It’s the Celtics…I don’t want the Knicks to just win…I want them to dominate! I’m hoping Kemba goes off on them.
      :-)

      geo…stay well!

    24. The way I see it, the Celtics #1 and #2 are better than our #1 and #2, but we have a deeper team.

    25. @TimBontemps
Ime Udoka says Grant Williams will start tonight alongside Marcus Smart, Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum and Robert Williams.

Randle vs Grant Williams. I like that matchup for us. Meanwhile, RJ’s defense on Tatum and/or Brown should be an interesting test of whether he’s ready to be our new stopper.

    26. Watching the Nets last night I couldn’t help but wonder if they have enough depth and defense to win a championship. They don’t look as deep or good to me as last year’s team (assuming good health).

    27. Someone is going to have to explain the purpose of adding Westbrook to LA. LA looks like a “Lebron the GM” fantasy league team. The formula for success with Lebron is to surround him with shooters, maximize the space, and allow him to dominate the ball and get to the basket. He makes very few bad shot/passing decisions no matter how they try to defend him. Russ can’t shoot and does his best work dominating the ball in space or in transition. It makes no sense . He should probably just be the 6th man in the Lebron role when James is resting.

    28. Alan: RJ’s defense on Tatum and/or Brown should be an interesting test of whether he’s ready to be our new stopper.

Hadn’t thought about this, but it’s certain that RJ can’t defend both players at the same time, so i guess we’ll start the season getting to know how bad Fournier is on defense, when facing an All-Star player (Brown).

    29. NO Deeefense: He should probably just be the 6th man in the Lebron role when James is resting.

This is actually a good idea, let’s hope they keep insisting in starting both. ;D

    30. Celtics roster ain’t scary.
More interested to see Udoka’s coaching.

Lakers look shit but i wouldn’t be surprised if they transform into a juggernaut in the playoffs and sweep em all.

Bkn is deep. Freak is Freakier and Nwora seems like a rising star.

    31. The theory of the case for Westbrook on the Lakers is it’s much easier to find good shooters on the open market than it is to find players who can legitimately give LeBron a breather when it comes to ball handling, like Westbrook. I would even say the theory was vindicated to an extent when the Lakers were able to sign Monk, Nunn, Ellington, Ariza, and a certain former Knick for peanuts.

The problem is if they’re not going to either start AD at the 5 or bring Westbrook off the bench, their starting lineup is always going to have 2 complete non-threats from 3 in Westbrook and DAJ, and 2 guys who don’t exactly terrify you from 3 in LeBron and AD. That really is wasting the open 3PA generating potential of LeBron and to a (much) lesser extent Westbrook.

My guess is they eventually make a lineup change, but since I don’t think Westbrook will ever accept coming off the bench to stagger him and LeBron, and since it seems like AD steadfastly does not want to play the 5, I have no idea what it will be.

    32. Grant Williams is a grinder with a lot of energy,
Smart is a pest and knows Kemba,
Brown and Tatum had killed us many many times (and one of them will be E4’s assignment),
Robert Williams got his money and he’s a good young center.

Better keep our guard high and avoid the usual sleepwalking start,
the Celtics aren’t contenders but they’re well into the big fight for the 3-8 spot just as we are.
This game means more than just another opener.

    33. NO Deeefense: He should probably just be the 6th man in the Lebron role when James is resting.

This is actually a good idea, let’s hope they keep insisting in starting both. ;D

      Yes Please

it’s the game for Kemba & Fournier to show what the Celtics are missing by letting them go. Hopefully both show up with their A games. Agree, it should be interesting to see how RJ does slowing down Brown or Tatum.

    34. If anyone thinks keeping the Bulls organization together and functioning at a championship level is easy, or easier than switching teams, they probably never saw a Dolan owned team.

MJ, Pippen, PJ and Krause did a masterful job winning 6 in 8 years. Nothing un-goat-like about it.

    35. ***Someone is going to have to explain the purpose of adding Westbrook to LA. LA looks like a “Lebron the GM” fantasy league team. The formula for success with Lebron is to surround him with shooters, maximize the space, and allow him to dominate the ball and get to the basket***

Yeah, I think that moments before the Westbrook trade went down the rumor was that Buddy Heild was going to be traded to the Lakers. Then when it was Westbrook instead, I was kind of scratching my head, not because Hield is great or better than Russ, but because Hield just seems like the kind of guy that would be elevated next to a LeBron, unlike Westbrook. Hield could be like a Ron Harper, who went from a #1/#2 option for a shitty LAC team to flourishing as a cog alongside a few great players.

    36. Buddy also shot 10 3PA a game last year, and is at 40% for his career.

      Head scratcher indeed.

    37. It’s definitely interesting that the Lakers won the title two years ago in pretty dominating fashion and have spent both offseasons since trying not to make improvements around the margins but instead to dramatically overhaul the central identity of the team. Both times it seems like the core focus of that was to make life a little easier for Lebron by getting another guy who could do a lot of the ball handling (Schroeder, then Westbrook), but a guy who can make life easier for your best player is by construction kind of a luxury item and doing all this overhauling in search of an expensive luxury….yeah, it’s interesting.

    38. Westbrook had a phenomenally shitty opening night, and while I don’t think he’s a great fit on the Lakers, consider this: Last year, with the Wiz, he had an uneven season, lots of down nights. His worst single-game performance per game score was 1.3. The year before, the weird season with HOU, his low was 1.2. Last night, he posted a -0.4.

Is this is the new normal? Maybe. Or maybe there’s a lot of hand-wringing about one performance and the Lakers should hold onto hope that he can become a lower-usage triple-double machine, as he is fully capable of. Although I like him as a personality and competitor, I’m not a huge Westbrook stan, especially over the past couple years, but he’s not going to be this bad very often.

    39. Is this is the new normal? Maybe. Or maybe there’s a lot of hand-wringing about one performance and the Lakers should hold onto hope that he can become a lower-usage triple-double machine, as he is fully capable of.

      Agreed.

I don’t think Westbrook will be THIS bad. It’s still an odd duck of a team though. Right now they have a bunch of wings who are banged up, so that’s why they ended up playing some of those very odd looking lineups last night. But the wings who are hurt– Wayne Ellington, Trevor Ariza, Talen Horton-Tucker, and Kendrick Nunn– aren’t very good to begin with. Ariza has had a fine career but he’s 36 and just had ankle surgery and it’s not clear when he’ll be back. Ellington is a generic journeyman.

They seem really thin on the wing and lacking in shooting. They don’t look like title contenders to me.

    40. Like others here have suggested, I don’t think the issue with Westbrook is how bad he will be because he’s just not going to allow himself to play this poorly on a consistent basis. But will he be worth the decrease in production we’re seeing from him at this point in his career? Because he doesn’t compliment the Lakers very well from a personnel standpoint. His acquisition seems like a Lebron GM level move that Pelinka will get saddled with when time for blame comes around.

    41. What happened with Westbrook last night doesn’t mean too much to me. I simply don’t see why they made that move. Last night did nothing to change my opinion. Had I seen some kind of strategy change that made sense and he just had a bad night, that would be OK. I don’t see the fit.

    42. Westbrook as the energizer sixth man can make sense (aside from his gigantic contract),
he’s past his prime, can’t shoot a lick but he’s still a premier boxscore stuffer, good or bad.

But he’s not a star anymore, he’s useless off the ball, his defense is past swiss cheese and the move smells GM-LeBron from a mile.

The Lakers are arrogantly trying to convince us that their six-HOFers retirement house is the right way to buy a championship, we’ll see…

Knicks announce Taj Gibson (personal reasons) and Nerlens Noel (sore left knee) have been ruled out for tonight’s game.

Well, Mitch is definitely starting, and we’ll probably see some of Mr. Jericho Sims. But this will almost certainly force Thibs to play the Obi/Randle frontcourt at least in spurts.

Oh, that’s bad news. How many minutes will Thibs play Mitch? The over/under is at 34.5, and i’m taking the over.

    45. Max: Clyde and Patrick joined Willis in the top 75 NBA players of all time, I’m glad they did.

That’s awesome, and they deserve it. I’m feeling proud.

    46. Pretty much all of Westbrook’s value is wrapped up in his usage. He can dominate the ball and rack up huge counting stats. Westbrook off the ball, I don’t know what or how he’s supposed to help a team. He can’t shoot and he’s always been somewhat of an inefficient scorer and that’s only gotten worse in recent years.

    47. I do like the Obi/Randle combo, but among the issues with it is that Obi is the backup 4, and the only other guy on the active roster tonight capable of playing power forward is Kevin Knox. So unless Thibs is gonna go really smallball and put RJ at the 4 for some spurts, it may be tough to pair Obi and Julius for very long. Whereas on nights when Taj is around, he can also fill in at PF.

I don’t think this is really an issue in a world where Randle is going to play at minimum like 35 minutes per game and is frequently going to be 40+ if the game is close. In fact I would go the other way and say that basically the only way for Obi to have a significant role this year is for Thibs to play him with Julius a lot (or for Julius to get hurt, god forbid).

    49. Thibs needs to work tonight,
Celtics aren’t overimposing but TimeLord’s good and Kanter’s still a good rebounder,
we’re going to prove our depth from game 1.

Well, if Thibs is going to do this, i guess against Grant Williams (6’6) is the best chance.

    51. Brian Cronin:
      Yay, starting Mitch!

It will be interesting to see how many minutes Mitch can go and who they are going to use as the backup. I sure hope Mitch doesn’t get into quick foul trouble. That would be a debacle.

    52. going with Sierra Nevada Oktoberfest to kick off the season…Amber Marzen…just popped the first one for pregame..

    53. Somehow had three beers in the middle of the day today. Hasn’t happened in years.

      Let’s goooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!

(Will put up a thread if need be but I expect Cronin is on jr)

    54. Myles Turner erased LaMelo and Plumlee in back to back possessions,
Sabonis’s playing bully ball like he’s straight from the 80’s…
