Jared Jeffries Returns!

Jared Jeffries will be returning this season as a member of the New York Knicks (and possibly as the starting center on Christmas). Multiple Knick beat writers are reporting that Jeffries has stated that he will be re-signing with the Knicks on a one-year contract.
Welcome back, Jared!

I wish they hadn’t signed him to a long term deal.
All the reports suggest it’s a 1-year contract. Or is, “one year” too long for Jared?
Thomas B. humor: Subtle yet Refined.
Yes. Yes it is.
Vet minimum signing this was a smart move. Jared can play without the ball and that on this team is priceless. We dont need him to shoot, we need him to grab offensive boards and play stretch defense from several positions. People that expect him to score 10 points a night will always be disappointed.
Another thing about JJ, he does not need many minutes to be happy. If he played 2 minutes a night and grabbed a rebound or blocked a shot or stopped a PG from cruising down the lane we win with the vet min.
Honestly, I’m no JJ-fan, but w/a shortened season, having someone who’s familiar w/the system (and is willing to sign for one year) might be worth it. It does seem to indicate that Crazy Eyes Thomas is going back to Chicago and Foster wants to stay in Indy.
If that’s the case, I’d say bringing back Jeffries is better than going multiple years for the likes of Kwame Brown and/or Aaron Gray, right?
This site should love Jared considering his amazing +/- numbers lol
I actually dont mind the signing at all.
Kwame scares me, I really want no part of him at all. Aaron gray is blah. I like bringing JJ in but would still like to see another Mozgov type bruiser become available for cheap. The backup SG or starting SG (Hill, Parker, etc) should be where the MLE is used. MLE $$ should not be used on Foster.
ess-dog knows how I roll.
Maybe this was done to make the 66 game schedule feel like 82 games. Lord knows the last five seasons of Jared felt like ten. Do you remember how long JJ made this 4 seconds of basketball feel?
It was Charles Smith all over again I tell ya.
JJ at the millions he was making…..Hell no.
JJ at the vet minimum taking away no valuable cap space in 2012.YES
Ugh. Whenever JJ is on the floor I just feel like we’re a sucky team. A team that is in “fake it till you make it” mode. He’s probably a more valuable piece than I give him credit for but man is he awful to watch.
I think it’s a good signing. Short training camp, compressed season – will favor teams that don’t have to do a lot of learning on the go. Jefferies is great as a minimum or near-minimum salary player on a 1 year deal. Who else is taking a one year vet minimum deal that would help us more?
Meanwhile, if I were the Clips I would be SELLERS of that Minnesota pick if it might net me Chris Paul or Dwight Howard (even if they’re probably totally gun-shy on trading a lottery pick after the Kyrie Irving debacle). Call me crazy but I think Minnesota might actually be pretty good this year, and so that pick may never be worth more than it is right now. Minny has a crazy amount of young/unbridled talent and for the first time in…I guess their entire history have a real coach. Adelman is a GREAT coach. If he had a full training camp I would say they might have a 20% chance at sneaking in to the playoffs even in the Western conference. Denver may be losing their whole team, New Orleans might trade away Paul (and any playoff aspirations with him), so those last 2 playoff spots are essentially up for grabs if you ask me.
That 4 seconds was very painful I do concur
I think Jeffries is a perfect fit on this team and exactly what we need.
So……there.
Denver is in an interesting situation. If Nene leaves (and he sure seems like he is going to), do you even bother bringing Afflalo back? I like Afflalo a lot, but he seems to be the kind of guy that helps good teams a lot more than he is a guy that you build around. So if he’s going to make a lot of money, I wonder if they’re not better off just gutting the team and rebuilding around Lawson and Gallo.
At least we get to use the past-tense verb “Jeffrightened” for another year.
Speaking of Gallo – does anyone here still think he’ll ever be more than a 3rd best player on a very good team? I know he’s only 23, but he really hasn’t grown much as a player as far as I can tell. He didn’t necessarily come to the NBA with a rep as an amazing shooter, then tore it up from 3 his 1st year – but then has been a mid 30s 3 point shooter since. His eFG was 58 his rookie year, then only 52 his second year, then 50 and 49 with the NYK and DEN respectively last year. His claim to fame is his ability to draw fouls (his FTA/FGA is ridiculous) although you have to wonder how long refs are going to call fouls on guys guarding him just because he looks so out of control when he drives. He hasn’t shown any go-to moves, doesn’t finish well at the rim, and isn’t that great a shooter from deep or off the dribble. He’s a bad rebounder and average defender at best.
I dunno, I’m just sort of disappointed at his development, or lack thereof. He hasn’t exactly torn it up in his Euroleague experience during the lockout either.

I think Denver is in some serious trouble. They’re basically losing Nene, Kenyon Martin, Wilson Chandler, JR Smith, probably Afflalo all in one offseason. By some accounts they are in serious talks with Thaddeus Young of all people. Yeech.
I think Denver will bring back Afflalo, and with Lawson, Afflalo and Gallinari they are set long term at the 1, 2 and 3. Miller is a really nice back up PG for the next 2-3 years and when he gets back from China I think they will keep Chandler and they do have Faried plus Mozgov looked good after they new year in both NY and Denver and Andersen is a very good role player.
Losing Nene is a huge blow for any team but if I was Denver I would be making a hard run at Tyson Chandler and Gasol since it looks like Nene is gone. They have cap room and young talent so one big signing and they’re good again.
Denver with Lawson, Afflalo, Gallo, Faried, and T.Chandler is THCJ’s WP/48 wet dream. WE’ll have to perform random in-season checks of their version of Knickerblogger to see if he’s secretly posting there.
Although seriously – if that is their team, it’ll be a great test of a team that is basically all low-usage high efficiency guys.
I don’t think Wilson Chandler will resign with them. He’ll be looking for more than the midlevel, and will only get it in the next offseason when teams have cap room.
Have to think Nuggets are ok with being horrible this season if it means a shot at anthony davis, although i expect them to match any afflalo offer.
I think that Jeffries is a good signing. Not sexy or exciting but he is a solid bench player. He gets a little picked on because his game is so ugly but he helps us win.
Jared Jeffries – plays basketball without the ball.
I smell a T-Shirt in there somewhere.
Jared should play without the ball.
Jared Jeffries – Great at basketball (as long as the basketball is no where near him. The basketball has, in fact filed for a restraining order to make sure that Jared never touches it again).
Maybe, that’s too long for a t-shirt, but I’m not down with the whole brevity thing
Now if we can just figure it a way to sign Jordan Hill and Houston’s 2012 first round pick to the vets minimum, we might be on to something…
The only thing I can say without a doubt is that the Twitter age makes the next 19 days feel like six months. Everyday there is going to be some beat writer spinning a new story about “inside” information that never ends up being true. Or at least not true enough to actually happen.
@29 to your point…
I love how 2 days ago it was Y! reporting that Paul told NO that he wants to play only for the Knicks and now the same guy writes an article about where Paul might get traded and the Knicks are not even mentioned in the article.

I am on the side of wanting to see the Paul deal go down immediately so the Knicks can focus on improving as much as possible right now while Amare is still healthy.
at least this one mentions us. how come none of the reporters have picked up on the theme on this board of using Melo or Amare in the trade? Do we think that this is not a consideration of the front office?

Plus he’s the only guy on our team that can guard Rondo (and, yes, that is kinda sad)
How about a picture of him with feet photoshopped into where his hands should be?
Just checked out Jerome Jordan’s recent stats for KRKA, and can see the reason for hesitation to sign him…
http://www.nba.com/knicks/schedule/
schedule’s out.
one thing I’ve already noticed – we get the Lakers in LA without Bynum (4th game of the 5 game suspension).
Also – we’re on national television 27 out of 66 games.
12 pts, 7reb, 1.3 blocks in 24 min/game on 56% FG and 82% FT doesn’t seem that bad to me…
Damn, now I gotta weigh buying league pass for 41 games…might just wait and see how azzav does.
damn 39, even worse
Robert skulks menacingly in a back alley. Spree saunters by.
ROBERT
Psst. Hey buddy. C’mere. Does youse likes the NBA?
SPREE
Why yes, good sir. I do in fact greatly enjoy watching professional basketball, especially when it is televised. Why do you ask?
ROBERT
Lil birdy tolds me youse wants to drop some serious coin for league pass.
SPREE
That is correct, sir. Alas, in these times that try men’s souls, I fear the exorbitant cost. Woe is me!
Robert opens his trenchcoat
ROBERT
Just your luck, Pal. I gots …

OFFICER KURYLO
Nothing to see here. Everyone move along now.
FIN
Gotta hit the ground running. Winnable games in that first month.
Considering Amar’e/Chauncey’s brittle bodies, I don’t think “hitting the ground” should be even used colloquailly w/r/t this team.
Last 2 games were less inspiring. Granted, Moz did not tear up his league either and at least he was eventually servicable.
I was trying to think of someone to compare Jorts to in terms of upside. Laimbeer came to mind but that is way too ambitious. Then I read today that Jorts wants to model himself after Kendrick Perkins (and Rodman, although that’s a joke!) Perkins is a good comparison, and for Jorts to set that as his vision speaks well of his self-awareness.
How much could NBALP be? With a shorter season and the lockout I’m sure the NBA will come up with a reasonable price. The broadband version will likely be under 80 dollars. That’s about 2 dollars a game for the non national Knick games. Do the right thing. Buy NBALPBB.
Don’t know if you guys saw this yet, note that there is no mention of whether Paul would sign an extension with either team, sort of an important component to a deal, dontcha think?
http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/217067/Hornets_Expected_To_Make_Decision_On_Paul_Trade_By_Friday
Do the players get a 51% split of NBALPBB, or is it not part of BRI? This could factor heavily into the decision.
I thought it was interesting as well that no article I read regarding cp3 makes mention of whether he would sign long-term with any of the 3 main potential suitors (supposedly celtics, warriors and clippers). The fact that they claim that acquiring tyson chandler would increase the likelihood he would stay tells me he definitely isn’t going into any trade scenario (at least unless it is to NYK or maybe LAL) with a guarantee of staying. No matter where he goes, sounds like he won’t commit since he stands to make more cash by inking a max contract after opting out first (a la deron williams).
I actually hope NO just pulls the trigger on a Paul trade and some deluded team like the clippers or warriors overpays to rent Paul without assurances he will re-sign. Sets up things perfectly for us in that he would likely make it to free agency and give us our only really legit means to acquire him (via free agency), while at the same time allowing our current team to blossom (hopefully), giving us more time to see what we have before embarking on free agency, and taking away distraction of a potentially groundbreaking mid-season trade uprooting several current players.
It was 125 last year for the 7 team version of broadband last year. But national games are blocked from broadband so you really are losing a good bit of value off it. That being said I’ll probably be doing it, although honestly these days it’s really not necessary.
Im old school, I still get NBA League Pass so I can watch the games on my TV not my laptop lol
Of course it also means Im an idiot since it costs alot more.
I would much rather go with Jordan than waste time Jeffries. Jeffries has no upside, Jordan might become serviceable.
This is a guy who had the ball three feet from the basket with seven seconds left in a playoff game and tried to pass it.
How much is it to buy League Pass? The Nuggets might get my patronage.
I wonder if Carmelo is happy he’s back?
Love the desperate attempts to create competition for Paul. Klay Thompson, Epke Udoh and Stephan Curry is a fr cry from Bynum, Gasol et.al. That is clearly better than the best competing offer out there because it is a media report. What it does suggest though is that every other team knows the reality is that Paul is hell bent on being a knick and therefore have pulled out. Seriously hope that is the case and that I am not bitterly disappointed.
Billups, Fields, Douglas is at least competitive with DeAndre Jordan, Aminu and Eric Bledsoe
Last year, I think I paid 109 for the seven team broad band version. I streamed it right to HDTV. It was like watching it on TV but cheaper. There were minor service issues, but overall it worked fine. If the price is under 100 this year, I’ll buy it again. If not, I’ll make do with the national games and radio.
Even better is the fact that the Clippers reportedly will not even offer Jordan if Paul won’t extend with them. So it would be Billups, Fields, Douglas (and probably even Shumpert) vs. Aminu, Bledsoe and the Minnesota pick. I probably still take the Clipper offer, if only because of that pick, but…
A. Yeah, it is way closer than the media is presenting it as
and
B. Who knows if the Clippers are even offering that much. They might not even have the pick on the table.
The $3 million limit was something I was surprised that the owners insisted on. It definitely is a competitive balance issue (as the rich teams could afford to pay more every year), but I really wonder how it will factor in to future dealings. I somehow doubt any notable deals don’t get done because of that new rule. It just saves the rich teams money.
I was going to mention this. I would probably take Curry/Thompson for an unsigned Paul. Any Clipper offer w/o Gordon doesn’t really make sense. Jordan isn’t that good. They will get a player of that caliber with their own pick the following year.
But yeah, Billups, Fields, Shumpert and a pick doesn’t look that bad now if Paul won’t sign anywhere else.
A major problem that I see is that the only spot where the Hornets are actually sort of happy is at combo-guard, as they are fans of Jarrett Jack. And the Knicks don’t have anything to offer but combo-guards. You have to figure, then, that the Knicks will work the three-team combination hard, with presumably Billups and/or Douglas being the guys shopped heaviest, as I think that they have the best trade value (Shumpert might be good, but no one really knows for sure yet).
A Paul/Monta/Lee/Chandler group sounds pretty fun. Paul should actually make Monta a lot better. It’s not a bad market either. I think if Paul goes there with Chandler he might extend.
@60 – Agreed… with the sharpshooter wright sinking 3s, its very well rounded. Chandler is the best compliment to what Lee Brings. Can cover up his Defensive shortcomings. The only problem is who guards the bigger 2s in the west?
You know the phrase, “give me the ball.”
Jared’s is “don’t give me the ball.”
The Knicks will not make a straight up trade for Paul. They need a third and perhaps fourth team to get the kind of assets NO wants.
But I think it will come down to free agency.
You know, if you look back at the debates about players the Knicks should or should not have traded to get what they have, I have to say there isn’t one I regret.
We gave up a bunch of role players, with Lee, Nate, Gallo and WC heading the list. I wanted to see the team of the first half mature together and see what happens, but I think we’ll be fine.
I like the re-signing of Jared Jeffries, it gives the Knicks a defensive Forward, which they need BAD. But, I hope the Knicks can sign Marcus Camby or somebody else that can rebound and defend instead of having Jeffries for their starting center.
Any update on the status of Shawne Williams? I really liked his game on both ends for the price. Is he reluctant to go for a 1-year deal?
I suppose the corpse of Grant Hill is about what is available for the 1-year deal scenario, does signing him make Shawne expendable?
Training camp tomorrow? WOO-HOO!!!!
