Frank:
btw earlier in the year we were “discussing” the awesomeness of Ryan Anderson and whether he was the greatest thing since sliced bread or whether he was mostly feasting while every defender was paying attention to Dwight Howard.

There’s really nothing like a before and after to decide that:

WITH Howard in lineup, here are Anderson’s per-36 #s.
18.5 points, 8.6 rebounds on a TS of 59.9 (51 game sample)

WITHOUT Howard in the lineup, here are Anderson’s per-36 #s.
15.5 points, 8.8 rebounds on a TS of 54.7 (10 game sample)

Amazingly, it appears that defensive attention paid to one player CAN in fact improve the efficiency of players around him.

It's a symbiotic relationship. Where would howard be if not for the fact that he has four guys around him who are three point threats?

But yeah, that is plain ol’ awful news.

EDITED TO ADD: Ah, I see, it is the flu. Does anyone seriously expect Chandler to miss a game due to the flu?

Frank:
@13 – Anderson still averaged 6.9 3?s per game in April (essentially the Non-Howard period), which was exactly his season average prior. The difference was that he shot ~42% from 3 WITH Howard and 27.5% without Howard. His ridiculous efficiency was based on the fact that he took such a huge amount of 3?s and hit them at a 42+% clip. But somehow, without Howard, he became a worse shooter.

Could be injuries, sure. But if someone like Owen is going to use that argument, then all his anti-Melo arguments from Feb/March go out the window too. Melo was undeniably nursing all kinds of injuries during that period.

Look at this:
http://www.nba.com/advancedstats/player-vs-player.html#Dwight-Howard-vs-Ryan-Anderson|2730,201583;year=201112;season=r

here are the numbers for Ryan Anderson on the year year with Howard on bench and Howard on court.

Look at how much lower his percentage is on the corner 3 with Howard off the floor.

Remember, that was the shot we talked about him living off of with Howard.

By the way, I guess there’s nothing for Dolan to say if he seriously is considering hiring someone else (as “no comment” would likely be just as bad), but man, to say that they’ll “reassess the coaching situation after the playoffs” just seems so harsh.

I only said Owen because it was Owen who was gushing on and on about how Ryan Anderson was having the most efficient season in NBA history or some such thing.

I believe he's moved on to James Harden. :)

lol we could go on and on – if you take away his 5-12 from 3 point range against Utah, his percentage would be positively Landry Fields-like.

Yeah, but I think there's reason in excusing away his early games back where, again, he likely would have sat out had they not needed him due to Howard's injury. When you're looking at just a 10 game sample, and 3 of the 10 games the guy is playing hurt, it throws the whole thing off.

The 1-15 he shot from three point land in his second and third games combined likely had a great deal to do with his three-point percentage post Howard. You drop his first three games and I imagine his percentage would be quite robust.
