The Underrated Hall of Fame is hidden in the back of an unassuming bodega. There are no ceremonies, no statues handed out. If people figure out an inductee was actually really good (relative to their contract) they are removed from the Hall. It’s a pretty cool spot, not many people know about it.

    Interesting quote from our owner-

“I can tell from what we’ve heard, I think we’re going to have a very successful offseason when it comes to free agents,” Dolan said, without naming any specific players.

Hopefully this is the time after DECADES that Knicks will resurrect and playoffs will be just common and the title drought finally will end. Durant with ring in New York > Kobe / Lebron.

Yeah, I was just about to say that we need to trade Knox at halftime….

I like the fact that no one posted until Mitch came in the game….

Grocer, as always, I like what you did there. It probably should be located in a bodega bathroom…

  4. ptmilo

marvin williams and thad young are going to retire in complete anonymity with like 75k minutes

  5. Hubert

I know I should be watching the Knicks but this Murder Mountain release on netflix about missing people in humboldt county looks pretty dope. Might just have to catch the Mitchlights tomorrow.

Mitch really is amazing. The way he outjumped Mcdermott was kind of hilarious. The defense has totally fallen apart around him but you can see how wary people other than Sabonis are becoming. Domantas will learn too.

Great deflection from Robinson on the fast break…]

And then another block and a third foul….

I’lll be back in the third quarter…. ;-)

Extend Knox before he asks for a trade! :-)

  9. DRed

If you’re wondering “Is DRed going to make that dumb fucking Kerry Kittles joke every time Mitch is in foul trouble” the answer to that is yes, yes he is.

They edited the part where he said he thought giving Kemba and Tobias Harris a max contract would be a huge success.

Seriously though, he’s a pinhead. How else could Mills still be there so long? Mills could tell him anything and he’d believe it even if we were 25-57 next year.

DAJ is a much more complete ball player than I thought.

He’s not the athlete he was when he was younger, but he’s not washed and can pass a little.

  12. Z-man

I still don’t get why he seemed okay with not getting bought out…he could have really helped a playoff team.

Dotson still vanishes or goes cold at times, but there’s a really good player in there trying to break out. He’s either going to break out next year and be a very good two-way player or they should rein him in a little and let him score more efficiently in a more limited role spotting up and doing what he’s good at.

I read some interesting quotes that suggested he feels like it’s part of his job as a veteran to help young players and he enjoys it doing it. Maybe it’s as simple at that or maybe he knows who’s coming to NY next year and wants to be part of it.

  15. Grocer

I still don’t get why he seemed okay with not getting bought out…he could have really helped a playoff team.

My best guess is he’s looking for another multiyear contract and thinks that extending playing time with the next is better for that than 5 or 6 minutes off the bench for a playoff team. Or maybe the offers just weren’t there? I’m very curious about this.

  16. bockadoo

A first rounder (17), a late third rounder and Jabrill Peppers for OBJr. WTF. Every game I watched he was the best player on the field. Barr rejects Jets. Knicks suck. Rangers suck. Giants suck. Jets suck. I hate the Yankees. Mets better get Kuechel and win the WS. Tough times for NY sports fans who hate the damn Yankees.

  17. Stratomatic "I'm tired of the Knicks paying lip service to DEFENSE. Get defenders & two-way players. Then play them!

Someone has to explain to me why Mudiay is getting more minutes than DSJ. It’s not like I think there’s a huge difference between them right now on merit, but Mills has been hot for DSJ for awhile. Now he has him. He’s younger and is under control for longer. Unless you’re seriously contemplating bringing Mudiay back, what’s the point? Mudiay seems like a good kid. Play him so he can work towards getting another contract, but more than DSJ?

  18. bockadoo

Knox shooting over 50% for an entire half of NBA basketball. Sit him out for the second half so he can savor the feeling and he can say he actually did it it for a whole game.

I used to have a running joke with a friend of mine about something called “Obscurity Magazine.” We often wondered whether you were more obscure if you were on the cover of Obscurity Magazine or if you were briefly mentioned in the next to last page.

  20. Brian Cronin

A first rounder (17), a late third rounder and Jabrill Peppers for OBJr.

That’s pretty much fair market price for an injury-prone star like OBJ.

  21. Stratomatic "I'm tired of the Knicks paying lip service to DEFENSE. Get defenders & two-way players. Then play them!

This is getting sloppy and too ugly to watch. Time for Master Chef junior edition?

  22. Brian Cronin

I think he wanted to maintain his Early Bird Rights with the Knicks.

  23. Hubert

The Giants are actually below the knicks on my confidence scale. Like, way below.

And I say that as someone who loved the Barkley pick.

  24. d-mar

    My favorite Mudiay move:

    1) take 10-12 dribbles 2) take more dribbles and back your man down 3) pick up your dribble 4) look around to see who’s not open.

  25. Stratomatic "I'm tired of the Knicks paying lip service to DEFENSE. Get defenders & two-way players. Then play them!

Hardaway Jr is playing off the bench for Dallas tonight. He has to be miserable. He was happy to be back in NY. Now he’s back on the bench for a semi-tanking team in Dallas.

It seems like they are trying to improve his shot selection. He’s shooting fewer long 2s, more 3s, and doing less off the dribble. But so far he’s been bad from 3. He had that pretty good run in Atlanta, but maybe Mike Budenholzer is just that good.

  26. Hubert

If you’re wondering “Is DRed going to make that dumb fucking Kerry Kittles joke every time Mitch is in foul trouble” the answer to that is yes, yes he is.

Zero fouls in the 3Q tho. They must have Skyped at halftime.

that’s both hilarious – cuz, it’s such an easy visual to conjure, and, sad – cuz it’s so true, so often…

  28. bockadoo

@37 At least the Giants have a history of fairly consistent competency. None of the other franchises mentioned other than the Yankees do.

It’s probably got a false cover over the cover, like some porn mags had. And, like porn mags, the next to last page is probably ads. My initial take is that if you’re advertising you’re trying to be less obscure while on the cover of OM (not to be confused with OMM Magazine, a quarterly meditation digest) folks are probably wearing dark glasses and some sort of hat pulled low, trying to maintain obscurity.

  30. Stratomatic "I'm tired of the Knicks paying lip service to DEFENSE. Get defenders & two-way players. Then play them!

Popovich almost has to be the greatest coach ever.

It looks like the Spurs are going to win their 6th in a row and get into the playoffs again. I don’t see how he got that roster into the playoffs in the west, but somehow he got enough out of the role players and a somewhat overrated scorer like DDR to get it done. He should write a book someday.

  31. Grocer

This has felt like a terrible game on our part, but we’re only down 4 with 40 secs to play. Am I just so accustomed to horrific play that I’m just defaulting to seeing that? Or have we actually been terrible and just lucked into a close-ish game?

  32. Grocer

Or is it the terrible arena music that’s coloring my perception? Pretty sure I heard the Vengaboys a little bit a ago.

  33. Stratomatic "I'm tired of the Knicks paying lip service to DEFENSE. Get defenders & two-way players. Then play them!

We need to lock up Mudiay now before he asks for a trade. :-)

  34. Z-man

Tell you what, Mudiay doesn’t seem bothered by crunch time (if there is such a thing for a tanking team) and his shooting stroke is much improved.

  35. ess-dog

I know I’ve said this before, but I’m ready to bail on this team after this recent shitfit from pudgy baby Dolan. What a thin-skinned jackass! I honestly think he will keep this team from ever being legitimate. This blog has kept me around, but I’m definitely going to start boning up on the Nets players, and they still have a chance at Zion…

  36. Brian Cronin

Man, Bogdanovic is getting PAID by someone this offseason.

Dolan was talking to the agents for Bogdanovic and Cousins. Boogie and Bogdanovic in 2019!

  37. Stratomatic "I'm tired of the Knicks paying lip service to DEFENSE. Get defenders & two-way players. Then play them!

Tell you what, Mudiay doesn’t seem bothered by crunch time (if there is such a thing for a tanking team) and his shooting stroke is much improved.

I don’t see why people think DSJ is so much better than Mudiay.

There is some enthusiasm for one and utter disdain for the other.

I see the athletic and PG skill difference in some areas, but at the end of the day DSJ’s decision making and overall play is poor and they are close enough that I’m not even sure which will ultimately be the better player. DSJ is a year younger and will probably be better, but Mudiay did lose some development time overseas. The real problem is that’s hard to be confident either will be the PG of the future. It feels like they battling to see who is going to be the better backup.

  38. Stratomatic "I'm tired of the Knicks paying lip service to DEFENSE. Get defenders & two-way players. Then play them!

If Perry doesn’t add 1-2 legitimate stars, do something productive with that cap space, or roll it over, I’ll have to officially hand over my Knicks card until Dolan and Mills are gone. There’s only so much pain a man can take. The problem is that Dolan is so twisted, the more people tell him to sell the team, the less likely he is to do it even if it makes economic sense for him. He’ll do things that aren’t in his own self interest just to spite use.

  39. Brian Cronin

There is some enthusiasm for one and utter disdain for the other.

    and then…

DSJ is a year younger and will probably be better

    So…huh?

That’s precisely it. DSJ is younger, affordable for a couple of years and has actually improved in his second year while Mudiay really didn’t in his second year.

  40. JK47

Well, DSJ has the more point guard-ish 34.6 AST%, while Mudiay is down there at a rather un-point guardy 23.9. DSJ does actually try to pass the ball sometimes.

    He still stinks tho

  41. Brian Cronin

Yeah, I’m not a big DSJ fan, either, but come on, there’s real reasons why you would be more up on DSJ than Mudiay.

  42. Z-man

I personally don’t get the outrage about how Dolan treated an asshole fan. It’s not like Dolan is some unknown commodity and the fan had no idea that he was likely to get thrown out if he said something rude to him. (we’re not debating whether or not it was rude, are we?) To me, this is small potatoes compared to throwing Oak out or defending Isiah. I mean’ seriously, if you are still rooting for this team after the million asshole things that he has said and done, this would be a heck of a time to quit.

  43. Z-man

I don’t get why anyone would have a preference between Mudiay and DSJ at this point. Both are seriously flawed players with some tentative strengths. DSJ is younger and more talented but his body language is a real turnoff for me; he seems to make one stupid play after another. He’s like a poor man’s Starbury. Mudiay at least seems hungry when he’s out there. His court vision and decision-making is terrible but I like that pressure doesn’t seem to bother him.

  44. Z-man

re: rookie deal, if Mudiay signs for say 2 years @ $5 mill, which is something like DSJ’s rookie deal, wouldn’t it make that argument moot?

  45. JK47

Mudiay has seen a 50-point bump in his TS% this season, and he still sucks, because his assist and turnover numbers are shitty. His defense is also horseshit, as evidenced by his low steal rate of 1.1 per 36.

Smith, with a 50-point bump in TS%, might be a decent player. He’s had pretty good assist and turnover numbers as a Knicks, and he at least flashes occasional decent defense, gets more steals than Moody-A.

The way I see it there’s like a 0% chance Mudiay turns out to be useful, and maybe like a 15% chance Smith turns out to be useful.

  46. thenoblefacehumper

The question is pretty nonsensical, but less so if you view it through the lens of someone who has never bothered to google “win curve” or “NBA salary cap”

  47. Bruno Almeida

    @66

Not really, because Smith Jr. is already guaranteed under control and the last season is a team option, so he can be cut after next season if necessary. Plus to re-sign Mudiay we’d have to keep his cap hold around for a bit and find a way to get rid of DSJ’s contract which is guaranteed for next season since the option was picked up.

So unless you think Mudiay is clearly better, and at the same time he’s willing to sign the same contract that DSJ has right now, keeping DSJ is simply easier.

I agree with JK that DSJ has a slight chance to improve more and he’s younger, so that only makes the decision easier.

  48. Z-man

The larger point is that they are similarly bad players on similar career trajectories, so I don’t really care one way or the other. In terms of improvement arc, Mudiay and Smith Jr. have both made significant improvement…one at age 21, the other at age 22…and both from worst player in the league to very mediocre. I don’t think their chances of becoming useful are all that different. My understanding is that if they renounce Mudiay, they can still re-sign him to a near-minimum deal, or let him walk. The cap hold is only in play if we want his bird rights, and that if we immediately re-sign him, his cap hold becomes his deal. My understanding is also that DSJ can’t be renounced for next year, his option has already been picked up, so dumping his salary before the FA period would require finding a taker. My understanding is that there is a theoretical scenario where keeping Mudiay over DSJ possibly makes financial sense. If that’s wrong, then whatever. Like I said, it’s likely to end badly in either case.

  49. Hubert

I personally don’t get the outrage about how Dolan treated an asshole fan.

Yeah, it was a fairly benign reaction from him, too. It was blown out of proportion bc there is an industry desperate for content.
