Game Thread: Knicks vs. Spurs

The return of J.R. Smith!

This is an early statement game for the Knicks. A win not only gets them to .500 on the season but also shows the rest of the league that the Knicks are right up there with the top teams in the NBA.

It will be interesting to see if Bargs can duplicate his impressive Friday performance.

Shump maintains his starting spot (it seems highly unlikely to me that Shump will lose his starting gig with Chandler out – you can’t very well start JR at the 3…or can you?).

Here’s hoping that J.R. was not out late last night!

Let’s go Knicks!

I love how Isola saying “Maybe a trade of Shump for Faried could make some sense” suddenly became “The Knicks are looking to trade Shump for Faried?!”

  2. Kahnzy

This could be an ugly afternoon…the offense doesn’t look bad, just missing wide open looks. The defense however looks like we might give up 120 today.

  3. Brian Cronin Post author

Just checking – it’s still dumb when Pop changes his lineup to match up with the other team, right?

  4. Brian Cronin Post author

Last year the Spurs opened up a big lead on the Knicks and the Knicks came back to steal the game, so this game is far, far from over. And that game was in San Antonio!

  5. d-mar

I sometimes question why Shump has a reputation for being a superior defender, seems like opposing guards are constantly blowing by him

  6. Kahnzy

Thank goodness J.R. Smith is back to chuck up the airballs that Hardaway would be throwing up. Also, the defense is painful to watch.

  7. Owen

    Defense is truly poor.

Spurs are a great team. They run their offense the way I dream about the Knicks playing.

  8. coyle022

Jr Smith with arguably the worst 7 minutes of basketball in Knick history. Throw in the Orange Uniform curse and 5-man Matador defense, this one could end in the 150’s for SA.

  9. coyle022

And does anyone here have any faith that Woodson is going to make the right adjustments/at least competently coach the team? We saw it last year against IND in the playoffs, but any top-tier coach just coaches circles around him. Dislike Vogel and Popovich but would love to have them on our sideline instead of this Switching nonsense and uninspired play.

  10. er

Breen’s go to criticism is that “the ball is sticking” Does he even watch the game or just have that queued up for when the knicks are playing bad lol

  11. coyle022

What will it take to get Cole Aldrich some burn? obviously we struggle with Rim Protection-isn’t that what a 6’11 250 Lb center is for? again Woodson neglecting common sense and it has lead to a 21 pt deficit and we’ve only scored 21 points

  12. d-mar

There is a serious problem when an opposing player grabs a rebound and goes the entire length of the court for an uncontested layup

Or they just have better personnel than Woodson does.

  14. Owen

The spurs are playing patty mills and Jeff pendergraph. And Marco bellinelli is starting. Plenty of scrubs in their rotation (although wp has always loved ayres-pendergraph)

  15. Will the Thrill

Shumpert doesn’t look like anything special on defense anymore like he once did. If they could trade him for Faried (doubtful), I’d be all for it. Woodson either isn’t maximizing his talents or he just really isn’t as good as we all thought he could be.

  16. Kahnzy

If we can keep the lead under 30 entering halftime, maybe we can prevent getting blown out by 50 by the end of the game.

  17. Kahnzy

I wonder if Spurs fans on their equivalent of Knickerblogger are upset that they’re only up 16 and only scored 61 in the half.

  18. maxwell_3g

we all know that Stat plays no defense, but know whats really awesome???? when he commits stupid, pointless off the ball fouls to ensure that the other team shoots lots of free throws. if you are not going to play defense, at least don’t commit fouls

  19. Brian Cronin Post author

Cut the lead to 16. That’s not awful. At least Bargs’ shot is cooking again. His defense has been atrocious (he had lots of company there), but if he can shoot like that in the second half, he’ll still be a net positive for the game.

  20. Kahnzy

Did anyone see the end of the Heat game? Major brain fart by Wade whoa

Actually, I thought it was a good decision. 0.6 seconds left, and clock starts ticking as soon as the ball hits rim meant Boston would have had a helluva time getting it in time to call timeout to set up anything other than a lob.

He totally botched it though, but even then it took a ridiculous cross-court pass, and an absurd fadeaway jumper over LeBron for Boston to steal that game. I’d be willing to place bets that Wade only botches it that bad and Green makes that incredible shot less than 1 time out of 100.

  21. Brian Cronin Post author

Who takes out Bargs for Amar’e on a defensive possession? That’s beyond terrible.

    Bargs did have two fouls.

  22. Owen

But Bargnani got his first board, so there is that….

Precious few rebounds to be collected with the way the Spurs are playing….

  23. EB

Probably want to guard Green better.

I think our goal for the rest of the game should just be to not let Green score again.

  24. Brian Cronin Post author

Dolan has officially left his seat. I feel bad for the shouting Woody is going to get from Dolan. Hell, I bet Mills is getting an earful right now, too. Dolan is such a dick.

  25. Owen

This is a pretty classic demonstration of why defensive rebounding is so important. Spurs only have 3 o-boards and we are down 30….

    Hard to watch.

  26. BigBlueAL

Really hope Melo sits the entire 4th quarter. Last thing we need is to get blown out and get Melo injured.

  27. Brian Cronin Post author

While there is no excuse for this deficit, it is fair to note that the Spurs are a very good team. It’s not like this is against the Raptors or something like that, ya know?

  28. Frank O.

I’m out guys. I’m not wasting time on a beautiful Sunday watching a team that mails it in.
    Fuck Dolan

  29. Brian Cronin Post author

I love that Aldrich just cannot get off the bench. Down 34 but no, can’t play Aldrich.

  30. Brian Cronin Post author

Cole already for the game tied for second on the team in rebounds and tied for first in assists.

  31. Kahnzy

Games like this make me really wish I could just shut off my loyalty for this team and transfer it to a team like San Antonio…but God help me, I’ll be right there for the next game.

When I talk to people about the NBA, they ask me who my team is. I almost always respond with “the Knicks, unfortunately.”

  32. Brian Cronin Post author

So can we try Cole instead of Stat

Right? Aldrich did pretty much exactly what he has always done. He’s not some great player, but he is a solid guy who will do what he did today every time out there.

  33. JK47

What a pathetic miserable shitty joke of a basketball team. I get it that none of the guards on this abortion of a team can throw a basketball into an ocean, but allowing an opponent to come on your floor and torch you for a .618 eFG% and 30 free throw attempts means you either don’t know how to play defense, or you just don’t give a shit.

This is a soft, weak and incredibly stupid team, playing completely incompetent basketball on both ends of the floor. There isn’t a single player I would want on this team beyond his current contract. Not. A. Single. One.

  34. JK47

Rooting for the Knicks is a lot like rooting for the Raiders and Mets, which I also unfortunately do. The only hope is that the owner of the team dies.

  35. Brian Cronin Post author

There’s still way too big of a swing here based on whether the Knicks win or lose. The stuff after the win on Friday was over-congratulatory but the sourness over this loss is too much, as well. The answer lies in the middle.

  36. BigBlueAL

My frustration with this team is that I had a real strong belief this team would match last season’s win total and possibly do better in the playoffs. Right now unfortunately all I see is a mid 40’s win total with their hope of advancing to the 2nd round depending on who they face in the 1st round.

  37. d-mar

Sczerbiak nailed it on the post game. Very first Spurs possession, Knicks switch, Bargs ends up on Parker, Parker blows by him, dishes to Green in the corner for a wide open 3. And the whole game was like that. I just don’t get the never ending switching, when we have the ball, does Felton ever end up with centers guarding him?

STOP SWITCHING GET OVER THE GODDAMN SCREENS LIKE EVERY OTHER TEAM DOES! that is all..

  38. er

Although I unfortunately follow the Raiders i dont feel your despair about this team. Give em more than 6 games to get it together. To me there are three big issues.

1.Felton shooting terribly on wide open 3s
    2. Defensive rotations on the wings(probably due to constant switching)
    3. guards getting blown by

  39. er

You are right but most posters online are diehards so they die hard lol. I think Woodson needs to change his switching philosophy, and maybe start someone else other than Felton because his shooting on unguarded 3s is HORRID.

  40. JK47

Switching rather than fighting through screens is just lazy, fundamentally horrific basketball. And it seems to be a feature, not a bug. It’s like this every game. It’s SO easy to get the Knicks to bite on a switch. Set one mediocre screen, run your point guard around it, and boom. Every goddamn time. They do it on purpose. That is the team’s strategy.

That’s why it is impossible for them to be a truly good team. They might go on a hot 3-point shooting bender and put together some wins at some point in the season, but in the big picture this team ain’t winnin’ shit. They don’t have the talent to make up for the terrible coaching.

  41. coyle022

The switching is all Woodson. You see other teams do it but only with a “switching” lineup . Obviously having Bargnani on the floor does not consitute a “switching” lineup.

  42. EB

    Actual issues with the Knicks:
    1) We don’t have Tyson Chandler
    2) We don’t have Tyson Chandler
    3) We don’t have Tyson Chandler

  43. Jack Bauer

I cannot wait to see Dolan’s reaction to that abortion of a game. Should be epic.

Agree on the switching nonsense that makes up the Knicks defense. They seem to be the only team in the league that does it to this extent, and perhaps there’s a good reason for that.

  44. BigBlueAL

There is a reason Woodson has never coached a Top 10 defense over a full season. He is not good at coaching defense.

  45. EB

The year he was Defensive Coach for the Knicks and took over halfway through the season they were 5th in Def. eff.

  46. EB

ok, I can’t wait to see Dolan’s reaction to that TRAINWRECK of a game.

I think I liked abortion better. Trainwreck makes the problem seem unavoidable.

  47. BigBlueAL

Woodson’s teams in Atlanta defensively ranked 29th, 27th, 23rd, 18th, 12th and 13th. Last season the Knicks were 18th. I think thats a better indication of his ability to coach defense than a lockout shortened season when he was only the head coach for 24 games. He is not some kind of defensive guru.

Whats up with the use of abortion as an adjective? Is that a thing?

He used it as a noun.

  50. ephus

The Knicks were dominated in every aspect of this game.

I am not panicking. San Antonio executed its plan: make someone other than ‘Melo score. It worked because everyone else was awful.

I was shocked by how badly JR Smith played. Bad decisions are not shocking, but slow and low energy is.
