Game Thread: Knicks @ Pistons

For your in-game sputtering rage and bile-filled rants…
Hey, did you know that in addition to banging the keys here and occasionally for the NY Times, Robert is a playwright, an actor and a wand'ring mendicant/gadfly? He also once wrestled a bear...and lost.

SHUMP SHUMP
Firsties
…darn…
Shump Shump means firsties in French.
C’est vraie.
Wow…way to start a game Fields!!
C’est vraie means fifthies
“SHUMP SHUMP” is 1-0 this season, but it wasn’t a very convincing win. Hopefully today the Knicks will give the ritual a definitive victory.
I know it’s been said here a lot but Landry Fields is really slow defending around screens. Gordon could kill the Knicks tonight.
Great movement so far on the offensive end.
Exhibit #1 in the case against Melo
…and just as I praise the ball movement, a Melo iso results in a contested 20 footer over a taller defender with plenty of time on the shot clock. Ugh.
GREAT pass by Melo.
Shump shump had Amare open on that roll, he got the offensive board and the score anyway but it would have been nice to see a good pick and roll from this team.
Landry’s defense is atrocious. Dude just doesn’t seem to have the foot speed to defend NBA guards.
Much better ball movement so far. Liking it. Maybe DWTDD can regain his mojo chasing Gordon around screens – we’re gonna need that tonight
Quick side note – does anyone agree that it would be nice to have auto-refresh on this blog? There are plugins for it.
Melo playing PG now.
U were referring to the oop to Chandler right? (;
Some things for this team are already coming together; Chandler seems to be learning the tendencies of his new teammates and fighting for position as shots are going up instead of rebounding reactively after the carom like he was in the first few games.
This Detroit announcer just said “Amare Stoudemire” and “rebounding prowess” in the same sentence. He instantly loses all credibility with me. lolz
Stoudemire open J– BRICK
Knicks killing the Pistons on the offensive glass right now.
Why was TD playing soooo off his man right there? Smh.
I like the move to put Walker on Gordon.
Jorts 3-point shooting needs to stop. Now.
Wow, big hit on Douglas. I thought the Giants game was tomorrow.
Not a whole lot to complain about, 9 minutes in…
Except for that Melo shot, of course ;)
That’s why it seems so quiet in here….
I like Shump starting but I’m not sure it should be at the 1. However, he looks great so far..alot quicker against smaller PG’s than I thought he would be. I just hope it’s not 2 tough a transition to play off the ball Davis is healthy considering that by the time he gets back that Shump will have gotten used to having the ball in his hands. This sounds a little ridiculous, but why not start Bibby at the 1 with Shump at the 2 til Davis gets back? Bibby can run the P&R and Douglas is gonna get alot of minutes anyway. Apart from that, I think Fields can give us more than what Walker gives backing up the 2 & 3, so maybe we could package Walker and Douglas for a better PG like Augustin, Maynor or Sessions.
Ugh. How can anyone defend that shot from Melo?
i dont get that melo double teamed 3 in the corner with time on the clock?? the ball is finally moving and finding the open man… drives me crazy!!
That was wow, um, that was brutal
heroball, as someone put it last night. Or “bad shot” as I would tonight.
Toney Douglas, wide open 3, BRICK
Well that’s it, Douglas won’t get another pass from Melo.
There’s another one (fade away 20 footer with time on the clock…)
But who’s counting, anyone?
Someone REALLY needs to be calling those screens out to TD, he always gets caught on them
I take back everything i said about melo
Well at least that was better than last night’s first quarter…
Shump +6
Douglas -3
The Hawks just lost to the Heat without Lebron and Wade, now they’re blowing out the Bulls.
The wacky start to this NBA season continues…
I guess the Knicks aren’t much of a road show. The Palace looks only 1/4 full.
The way they’ve been playing I’m surprised NYers want to watch.
Knicks with 3 team fouls in first 24 seconds of the quarter.
Jorts!
Fields!
Two Knicks start to close out on Gordon; zero Knicks finish the close out.
Great pass by Jorts to Fields!
Nice to see Bibby find his stroke.
Guys, how is the weather in NY supposed to be tomorrow?? Just curious how the weather will be for Giants game.
Bibby looks re-animated
I think thats 4 team fouls already with 8:47 left in the half. Ugh.
I actually like that sub of Shump for Walker. I was scared when I saw Shump check in that Bibby or Fields were being pulled, when they each just hit a shot. Bibby-1, Shump-2, Fields-3, I’m guessing?
See, Melo isolating against Wilkins I can understand. He has the size and quickness advantage, it makes sense to some degree. It’s not the best thing for the offense as a whole, but it’s not the worst.
Against Prince it makes no sense, he’s bigger and arguably stronger and is a great defender.
STAT starting feel comfortable again from range.
Bibby’s playing well again. Smart ballplayer. He’s still a sieve on D, but he’s a pro
The Lions playoff game is tonight.
Have been loving posts on here for so long and after being a viewer for a while….decided to become a poster. The real Stat looking like he’s reappeared!
Good help D by Melo.
Melo completely lost his man while he was watching Prince’s shot, I’m glad that the tip didn’t go in. Melo’s gotta be more careful when Chandler is out though.
Melo with 3 blocks, 3 rebs and 3 asts so far. Good things come in 3′s lol
Loving the aggressive Fields tonight.
YES. Love that basket in traffic from Stat.
How is this the same team that nearly lost to the Wizards? Knicks are looking great right now.
Now thats something that frustrates the hell out of me. He loses his man on defense while ball watching ALOT.
STAT looking good in the 2nd quarter.
Yay
yes, the old STAT was supreme at tough makes in traffic….by FAR so far the best half of basketball all around from this team so far this season.
Melo Facial!!!!!!!
D’Antoni is breathing a sigh of relief right now.
Key stat of the night so far? Melo and Amare each with 3 assists, no turnovers.
Never mind, Amare has 4 assists now.
Lets be honest, who was expecting Melo to shoot that jumper in that 1 on 3 instead of passing to Bibby?? lol
Okay. This is good
Melo has 3 blocks as well.
Of course, then STAT gets the “gimme” foul to go to the bench.
*raises hand*
Both Melo and Amar’e with 4 assists tonight so far.
Bibby is on FIRE.
Bibby is absurd right now.
Bibby is feelin’ it!
WOW. That Bibby three was insane.
Fields a +24.
Im raising both my hands lol
Not a bad shooting night from Bibby so far, maybe we get the 2002 Playoffs Bibby
I expect Bibby to shoot like this every night now.
Like Scot Van Pelt “on fiyah!”
Which of you guys invented a time machine and brought back 2002 Mike Bibby? Fess up!
Jerebko is a good 3pt shooter, whichever big man is covering him has to be aware of that.
Bibby’s a +18 in just 9 minutes.
I expect that +/- differential every game now, too.
Has Jorts hit a three since the Kings game? I think he needs to stop shooting them.
Knicks are up 20 in the first half, yet Toney Douglas still manages to post a -5.
Brandon Knight. Why are you outletting to Greg Monroe?
Cold, unlike Mike Bibby. High of 42.
Bibby looking like Corey Webster there.
Melo with a great pass to Jorts. That’s what I want to see.
Just hope no rain or wind cause Eli struggles in those elements.
Well, I WAS just looking up Arizona’s basketball schedule…
Fields 3pt stroke still looks broken but I like to see him be this aggressive.
This is by far Amare’s best offensive game this year. Much more under control, passing off when his drives are stuffed. Active on the boards. This is the man we want to see.
Best half of the season.
Look at Jorts extend the lead!
This is what good teams are supposed to be doing to bad teams consistently. See Heat at Nets tonight for another example. That Hawks beating of the Bulls though is just weird.
TD must be so depressed right now. He went from starter to 3rd string PG in the course of 5 minutes 43 seconds…
Best half of basketball of the season and don’t care if it’s against the Pistons…given our track record over the last 3 games
I want to watch THIS Knicks team every night. Loving the aggression on both ends.
Everything’s good – reflexes, hands, spacing – everything just looks crisp. A big part is they have about a +10 in rebounding – when’s the last time THAT happened? (my guess: last year against Detroit, when Mozgov pulled his double-double and Randolph played…)
This was my argument before with you duck, you WILL see more of this as long as they are making their shots. I don’t think Melo WANTS to shoot 33 times in a game, but if it’s needed….
5 assists for Hoggy McBallstop. 25-16 edge on the glass and 11-4 turnover edge for NYK. 14 points on 5 shots for Nosferatu.
of course everything looks better when the shots go in.
Paramount Pictures presents: “Dead Man Ballin”" starring Mike Bibby
@108
It better. Because unlike the other top 3 teams in the east, we don’t really have a defense to back up on.
The defense is much much sharper…and Amare playing a lot better D too.
You think Bibby can see his reflection in a mirror??
Unrelated note: Happy to see Nate back in the league.
True. If Bibby’d bricked those threes we’d all be lamenting the Knicks over-reliance on long range shooting.
Zombie Bibby: “TREEEEEEEEEEYYYYYYS”
Same Brooklyn bar same beers same prego wife same seats much better result. Pistons will make a run this IS the Knicks
@116
“These are” the Knicks
True…16 3s in the half is a bit much. We’ll need to tamper that down a bit in the 2nd half
Hawks are a good team – it’s not weird.
Would be great to be able to sit the Big 3 for the entire or at least most of the 4th quarter.
Ditto
I haven’t seen the game but they’re offense was painful to watch against the Lebron-less, Wade-less Heat. I guess that’s just my current engraved version of them in my head.
Err. I mean I haven’t seen the current Hawks vs Bulls games.
It’s NOT needed. The Knicks are 1-2 in games where Melo has taken 24+ shots so far, so it’s not like he’s actually pulling out wins by playing hero ball.
Also, the Knicks missed some easy looks off Melo passes, according to the “Melo should be the only one shooting when other people miss” philosophy Melo should have “taken over”; instead, he has continued to move the ball(most of the time) and the Knicks offense ended up having what was arguably their best quarter of the season.
That’s what happens when you trust your teammates. Amare got the ball in rhythm and scoring which puts more pressure on the defense, if the ball wasn’t moving that wouldn’t be possible. The Knicks should ALWAYS be playing like this, even if a couple of people brick some shots and the other team is ahead a little bit.
Was just checking in on the Knuggets as I miss Mozgov and Gallo. But, I think we’re actually getting more productivity out of Jorts than we used to get out of Mozgov. Still miss Gallo though.
Melo killing us again, only 4-9, what a chucker (oh, and 3 reb, 5 assists, 1 steal and 3 blocks, but that’s irrelevant)
Lebron is playing in this one…has 20+ pts at the half
Nice feed by Shump-Shump
Detroit announcer: “Carmelo’s not the league’s best defender.”
@115 thing is – the Knicks really do have pretty good 3-point shooters. Odds are that over the long haul, they’ll make them. Real PG play will make it more consistent.
Let’s not get too excited, but also the Pistons are HORRIBLE
SHUMP SHUMP
Welcome to Shumpert Alley
Shump looked like he didnt even jump that high and he dunked in that alley-oop with ease.
Anyone see that Fordham is going to simulcast the Giants game at their home basketball game tomorrow?
Weird.
It is selfish I know, but I really wish Shumpert would stop making me look like a fool for lambasting the decision to draft him. Also, Landry should stop making me look bad for supporting the decision to keep him out of the Melo trade. Just saying.
I don’t think Shumpert went to Georgia Tech…I think he played at Hogwarts.
Jimmy Graham just made a spectacular one-handed catch for the Saints. Yawn. Ho hum. It’s probably not in his top five.
That guy… jeez.
Loving this Amare….no more contested 18 footers
Actually, this is the best game he’s played all season. HE’S MAKING EVERYONE AROUND HIM BETTER
Graham led my ff team to the title. Love that cat
Is that Melo or Magic Johnson?? lol
Shump makes easy baskets for people.
NICE drive and dish by Shump.
Looking forward to some Jeremy Lin action hopefully
post of the year……
I hope it gets to the point where the big 3 get to rest because of a gigantic Knick lead.
Jort’s first 3 since Sacramento…game officially done
A Balkman sighting
This should be a great opportunity for Jeremy Lin and Jerome Jordan to work on their pick-and-roll chemistry.
Ben Wallace has the chest of a 27 year old…and the hair of a 40 year old
Why is Amar’e playing right now?? Hopefully he only plays first few minutes of quarter and thats it.
Shump again to Amar’e for the dunk. Shump splits the trap on the PnR beautifully.
Shump has split the trap beautifully many times this game, kid’s got game.
Can we take Stat out now? PLEASE?
TD hasnt played yet in 2nd half.
I dunno why they needed to keep STAT in as long as they did. I’d have let him just take the fourth quarter off.
What a great win (I know I am tempting fate with that statement, but screw it, they can’t blow this one).
Refs trying to get the Pistons back into the game.
This Detroit team beat Orlando last week by 11. Go figure.
Balkman!!!
Balkman cleaning up!
LOL @ everyone who thought the sky was falling because we got off to a shaky start. Seriously the amount of negativity displayed on this blog is maddening. I am disgusted at the lack of faith in your team, your coach, and your organization. That being said I am a huge fan of KB and believe you are all just the most knowledgeable bunch of ranting lunatics around:)
Last year was the same exact way; we thought we were wasting yet another season watching a bunch of scrubs who couldn’t get the job done. By mid-season we fell in love with our bunch of losers because they suddenly seemed to be playing like a playoff team. It took some time to gel last year, and its going to take some time to gel this year. tonight is hopefully the beginning of a stretch of dominance. 6 of our next 8 are at home, and shump shump appears to be a great fit with the starting lineup, his presence just seems to make everyone hustle more. This team has much better pieces than the team at this point last year. We have a core that is comparable to any championship team, we just need the right role players. I realize the team looked terrible at the beginning of the season, but none of the guys on this team are going to accept mediocrity for very long. Thats better than i can say at any time in my knicks watching life. (started watching the year marbury took us to the playoffs, go figure)
GET LIN IN THE GAME
Great defensive sequence
This Detroit team might be worse than DC. Still, nice hustle out there. Christ, I sound like Jeff van Gundy
He seems to have shoulder problems flare up again, and he is horrible but that may be why he is horrible
Yeah, not like the great teams that have been punking us all week.
JJ & Lin coming in!!!
Jorts is bringing down his game with all of his 3 pt shots.
And I dont see how Walker gets minutes before Balkman.
Oh- and i knew i didnt like douglas… he’s rooting for the falcons tomorrow
Jordan on the throwing end of the alley!
Is he the player wearing the icepack on his shoulder?? Im watching Pistons broadcast so no mention of it but has MSG mentioned it??
yea detroit is one of the bottom 4 teams in the league but we still played great on both ends. barely any defensive breakdowns and mad assists. we made it look easy, got some burn for our reserves, and some sitting time for our stars, and thats what we’re supposed to do.
Lin swooping and hooping!
Lin!!!
There it was: the Lin-Jordan pick and roll!
Needs work.
Knicks have had a pretty favorable schedule to start off with just Boston and Lakers as decent teams.
Also it will be teach to move up in the pecking order, as Indiana and the Sixers have improved. Only the Hawks may have fallen a bit, but they also beat Miami.
Recap’s up
Gallo just hit a 3 to get to 30 pts and bring Denver within 3 with 7 secs
this is nowhere near long enough to be lecturing us, thanks.
so if you listed all NBA starters in history in order of average winning margin in career games they’ve started, Shump Shump would have a good shot at being 1st, right? :)
easily the best game of the year, nice to see the ball over halfcourt in 3-4 seconds almost every time. I can’t believe Shump Shump was only credited with three assists, I guess all of them were to Amare for dunks.
I love how the frontcourt looks playing alongside one real guard, this made me even more excited about Baron (heh, if that is possible).
and seriously, every game thread needs to start with SHUMP SHUMP and nothing else. f****ies will only bring doom and dismay, did we not learn this in the playoffs last year?
