Game Thread: Knicks @ Pistons

For your in-game sputtering rage and bile-filled rants…

Hey, did you know that in addition to banging the keys here and occasionally for the NY Times, Robert is a playwright, an actor and a wand'ring mendicant/gadfly? He also once wrestled a bear...and lost.

“SHUMP SHUMP” is 1-0 this season, but it wasn’t a very convincing win. Hopefully today the Knicks will give the ritual a definitive victory.

I know it’s been said here a lot but Landry Fields is really slow defending around screens. Gordon could kill the Knicks tonight.

Great movement so far on the offensive end.

Exhibit #1 in the case against Melo

  12. 12
    xduckshoex says:

…and just as I praise the ball movement, a Melo iso results in a contested 20 footer over a taller defender with plenty of time on the shot clock. Ugh.

    GREAT pass by Melo.

  14. 14
    xduckshoex says:

Shump shump had Amare open on that roll, he got the offensive board and the score anyway but it would have been nice to see a good pick and roll from this team.

    JK47 says:

Landry’s defense is atrocious. Dude just doesn’t seem to have the foot speed to defend NBA guards.

  16. 16
    Robert Silverman (@BobSaietta) says:

Much better ball movement so far. Liking it. Maybe DWTDD can regain his mojo chasing Gordon around screens – we’re gonna need that tonight

    U were referring to the oop to Chandler right? (;

    xduckshoex says:

Some things for this team are already coming together; Chandler seems to be learning the tendencies of his new teammates and fighting for position as shots are going up instead of rebounding reactively after the carom like he was in the first few games.

    SeeWhyDee77 says:

I like Shump starting but I’m not sure it should be at the 1. However, he looks great so far..alot quicker against smaller PG’s than I thought he would be. I just hope it’s not 2 tough a transition to play off the ball Davis is healthy considering that by the time he gets back that Shump will have gotten used to having the ball in his hands. This sounds a little ridiculous, but why not start Bibby at the 1 with Shump at the 2 til Davis gets back? Bibby can run the P&R and Douglas is gonna get alot of minutes anyway. Apart from that, I think Fields can give us more than what Walker gives backing up the 2 & 3, so maybe we could package Walker and Douglas for a better PG like Augustin, Maynor or Sessions.

  32. 32
    xduckshoex says:

I actually like that sub of Shump for Walker. I was scared when I saw Shump check in that Bibby or Fields were being pulled, when they each just hit a shot. Bibby-1, Shump-2, Fields-3, I’m guessing?

  55. 55
    xduckshoex says:

See, Melo isolating against Wilkins I can understand. He has the size and quickness advantage, it makes sense to some degree. It’s not the best thing for the offense as a whole, but it’s not the worst.

Against Prince it makes no sense, he’s bigger and arguably stronger and is a great defender.

Everything’s good – reflexes, hands, spacing – everything just looks crisp. A big part is they have about a +10 in rebounding – when’s the last time THAT happened? (my guess: last year against Detroit, when Mozgov pulled his double-double and Randolph played…)

Spree8nyk8: This was my argument before with you duck, you WILL see more of this as long as they are making their shots.I don’t think Melo WANTS to shoot 33 times in a game, but if it’s needed….

It’s NOT needed. The Knicks are 1-2 in games where Melo has taken 24+ shots so far, so it’s not like he’s actually pulling out wins by playing hero ball.

Also, the Knicks missed some easy looks off Melo passes, according to the “Melo should be the only one shooting when other people miss” philosophy Melo should have “taken over”; instead, he has continued to move the ball(most of the time) and the Knicks offense ended up having what was arguably their best quarter of the season.

That’s what happens when you trust your teammates. Amare got the ball in rhythm and scoring which puts more pressure on the defense, if the ball wasn’t moving that wouldn’t be possible. The Knicks should ALWAYS be playing like this, even if a couple of people brick some shots and the other team is ahead a little bit.

  125. 125
    marxster says:

Shump again to Amar’e for the dunk. Shump splits the trap on the PnR beautifully.

LOL @ everyone who thought the sky was falling because we got off to a shaky start. Seriously the amount of negativity displayed on this blog is maddening. I am disgusted at the lack of faith in your team, your coach, and your organization. That being said I am a huge fan of KB and believe you are all just the most knowledgeable bunch of ranting lunatics around:)
Last year was the same exact way; we thought we were wasting yet another season watching a bunch of scrubs who couldn’t get the job done. By mid-season we fell in love with our bunch of losers because they suddenly seemed to be playing like a playoff team. It took some time to gel last year, and its going to take some time to gel this year. tonight is hopefully the beginning of a stretch of dominance. 6 of our next 8 are at home, and shump shump appears to be a great fit with the starting lineup, his presence just seems to make everyone hustle more. This team has much better pieces than the team at this point last year. We have a core that is comparable to any championship team, we just need the right role players. I realize the team looked terrible at the beginning of the season, but none of the guys on this team are going to accept mediocrity for very long. Thats better than i can say at any time in my knicks watching life. (started watching the year marbury took us to the playoffs, go figure)

yea detroit is one of the bottom 4 teams in the league but we still played great on both ends. barely any defensive breakdowns and mad assists. we made it look easy, got some burn for our reserves, and some sitting time for our stars, and thats what we’re supposed to do.

this is nowhere near long enough to be lecturing us, thanks.

so if you listed all NBA starters in history in order of average winning margin in career games they’ve started, Shump Shump would have a good shot at being 1st, right? :)

easily the best game of the year, nice to see the ball over halfcourt in 3-4 seconds almost every time. I can’t believe Shump Shump was only credited with three assists, I guess all of them were to Amare for dunks.

I love how the frontcourt looks playing alongside one real guard, this made me even more excited about Baron (heh, if that is possible).
