I agree that we are not looking enough at JJ as a movable asset to a contending team. His defensive versatility should be in demand. I could see Dallas, Phoenix, Boston (which desperately needs depth), Denver and others being interested in him for a playoff run. So if we can’t move Long Duck Curry for $11M maybe we can at least move JJ for $6M.

Not sure he’s in positive territory yet – I still think we’d have to give an additional asset to move him. But he’s getting closer to breaking even!

I don’t think this effects trading him at all. Any team desperate enough to have considered him before this suit only wanted him for his post scoring. Not for his defense, not for his rebounding, not for his salary, and certainly not for his ability to keep his private parts to himself around his limo driver.

Agreed. Building on that, however. Let’s say Curry is convicted down the line (these things take forever, so maybe in a year). Grounds for cutting him without penalty in summer of 2010?

Point of order. As this is a civil suit there is no “conviction.” There can only be a determination of civil liability, or no civil liablity. Generally, performance contracts are not voided for the filing of a civil suit unless there is a morals clause within said contract. A good number of NBA players have been the subject of paternity suits and they have not lost their contracts because of that.

The most likely outcome is it being harder for us to trade him. But that isnt so bad. We can still sign Lee and a top free agent in 2010 with Curry still on board. We can go shopping again July 1 2011 when Curry and JJ come off the books.
