I don’t know his motivations, but I do get the sense that he’s not as tied to max money as everyone seems to think. if Walsh could present a good case as to why it would benefit him more to sign for less, I could see him going for it.

Interesting. I suppose that could be the explanation, but it would mean 'Melo is a lot more selfless than we make him out to be. I mean, 'Melo's extension doesn't have to be the max. Do you also think that if we traded for him, he'd agree to re-sign for less than max dollars?

Frank: twitterverse just went bonkers with Carmelo saying he would “take a hard look” at signing an extension with DEN if he’s not dealt.Ouch (if you’re pro-Melo-to-NYK). Now Melo is trying to put pressure on Donnie to up his offer also. C’mon Donnie, hold firm.

Gotta agree with Z – if taking on Al’s MLE is the price for holding onto our other young guys, I’d do it too. Harrington at $6M per is not that terrible a deal – the length is an albatross but it’s not like a Curry $11M contract. And Al WANTS to be here and can play a serviceable stretch 4 if necessary. Put him on the 2nd unit where his scoring can be useful and give him 15 minutes/game to keep him happy. Not that bad.

I think if we are sold on our young guys (Gallo/Fields essentially) then we need to be ready to give up some amount of future flexibility if absolutely necessary in order to get Melo at what is basically a bargain basement price.

Yeah, right... But isn't there a chance the new CBA allows for another 1 time amnesty thingamajig like they did in 2005 (when we waived Jerome Williams in 2005). Just the possibility of that mitigates the Harrington cost to a degree.
