BREAKING: Deron Williams to the Nets/Trade Deadline Open Thread

Well, kinda, sorta breaking… Here are the details: NBA.com reports that Williams goes to the Nets for Devin Harris, Derrick Favor, and two first round picks.

I suspect that makes things harder for the Knicks if they had their eye on him.

Damn that hurts. Personally, I think Carmelo would have helped the Nets more, and DWill would have helped the Knicks more.

Ken Berger is also reporting that Deron is not happy with the trade, so they will have to sell him on NJ/Brooklyn before his deal is up in 2012. I don’t know that this really improves the Nets either. Kind of a weird deal. Still have mad admiration for Prokhorov and the stealth way in which he got the Knicks to outbid themselves for Carmelo, and then sneak in for the kill on DWill deal.

  2. BigBlueAL

Also apparently Williams is not even eligible for an extension until July which means he can not be extended under the current CBA like Melo was. So the Nets cant even use the next CBA as a threat per say to Williams and have him extend now.

Doesnt help that many reports state he is not happy at all with being traded to NJ.

  3. jon abbey

I actually think this is great for NY: it means that Williams will almost certainly not be moved again before summer 2012, and I highly doubt he’ll resign in NJ/Brooklyn before exploring his options in free agency.

    Tweet from Alan Hahn:
Source tells Newsday the physicals are all complete. Carmelo, Chauncey and Co. will make debut tonight.

This deal definitely has Prokhorov written all over it. I’m sure it was killing an egomaniac mogul like him to be hearing all over the airwaves that he was all bluster and no results, so he said pull the trigger, damn the torpedoes and we’ll worry about extension later. A short sighted move to try and grab attention away from the Knicks.

I will be very interested to see D-Will’s press conference, and how difficult it will be for him to sound positive about this.

  6. Frank O.

    Speaking of positive…
    Ray Felton was pretty unhappy.
He said the Knicks didn’t want me and Denver did so that’s how it happened. He asked Denver through his manager to keep the four Knicks together so Denver could see how all four could do together.

  7. d-mar

Of course if you review the various reports from many of our insightful Knicks beat writers, the Knicks got “trumped” by the brilliant and shrewd Prokhorov, who can now “tweak” James Dolan with another billboard across from MSG. If I were Mikhail, I would make sure I get a 1 year lease on that billboard, or at least make sure he has the right to transfer it to the Knicks so they can paint a new uniform on D-Will.

  8. Ben R

I know basketball is a business but I think all the Knicks have a right to be a little upset, we were really building towards something and Felton especially left it all on the floor for the Knicks and then got tossed aside for a shiny new toy. We all had our beefs with Felton’s tendancy to shoot too much but the guy is a warrior and a leader and has more heart than anyone left on the Knicks. I love his attitude about keeping the four Knicks together, shows how much he really thinks about his teammates, not secretly plotting to replace them with his buddy.

  9. latke

Yeah, I do feel bad for raymond and hope he gets his wish of keeping the team intact. I would be happy to see Ray and the homegrown ex-knicks surprise the NBA. Now that Utah doesn’t have Deron, there’s no reason Denver can’t hold onto the seventh seed and at least make some noise against Dallas. They’ll be a very very quick team. Perhaps it will be Warriors v. Dallas part deux.

You don’t think this team pre-trade was building towards something. We were the 6th seed in their first half season togerther, we were one of the top 5 youngest teams. How were we not building towards something? Are building towards something now?

what were we building towards? certainly not a title. are we building towards something now? like I keep saying, it depends entirely on the recruiting ability of Amarmelo, and Dolan’s sudden death wouldn’t hurt.

  12. BigBlueAL

Just saw footage of Melo in his warmups saying hi to a bunch of teammates on the Garden floor, biggest greeting was for Allan Houston. Maybe he could come out of retirement and just spot-up from 3pt range spacing the floor for Melo and Amar’e lol.

we were the 6th seed cause the rest of the east sucks. we were a pretty average team and Felton at the end of the day was starting to hurt us. He shot too much and didn’t make enough of them

Unlike what it seems is most people here, I am excited and fired up for tonight. Cant wait to watch this team play.

  16. Robert Silverman

I agree BBA – I have MAJOR issues with the trade, but I’m geeked to watch. Alas, I’m acting in a play so it’ll be the MSG late nite rebroadcast

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — since I’m writing this from not too far from the new Brooklyn arena being built.

Prokhorov isn’t looking to get the Nets to 60 wins. He’s simply looking for a name brand player to get a new fan base in Brooklyn to buy some tickets. In this context, he did well for himself even if he can’t keep D Will past 2012.

Who loses in this trade? Likely Deron’s wife, Amy. Expect it to rain Ukrainian hookers upon his head the closer we get to 2012.

    Break a leg!! :-)

  19. endyendy

I’m looking forward to Amar’e and Melo forming a dynamic tandem while Chauncey spreads the ball around, Landry continues to hustle his way into our hearts, and Ronny claps excitedly. Will it happen? Who knows.

As for Felton, well, trades suck sometimes. He was always a rental himself, though obviously if he had improved and the Knicks missed out on CP3/D-Will he’d have been extended, but to that point he is a free agent the same year as those two.

  20. David Crockett

While we’re at it, why don’t we just make this the “trade deadline” open thread? (That way I can feel like I make the occasional contribution around here.)

  21. BigBlueAL

WOW, shocked that Dolan is doing the opposite and not giving Isiah credit at all for the trade and even mentioning his name and saying he had nothing to do with this. Now he is praising Walsh and talking about Walsh’s future with the Knicks????

WTF is this the Twilight Zone!?!?!? There may still be hope for Dolan yet!!!! lol

  22. BigBlueAL

Also Dolan mentioned Walsh’s option looks like needs to be picked up or extended by June not April.

but if Williams leaves, he’ll never play in the Brooklyn arena. I find it hard to believe many people will buy tickets based on his presence before knowing whether he’ll actually be there.

I have a feeling Dolan doesn’t know when Walsh’s contract ends.

I want to apoligize for all my negativity, I really do hope the Knicks do well, I hope I’m completely wrong and this turns out to be a great move. I think I’m going to skip tonights game get some distance. It’s going to be really hard to root for Melo, he’s probably my least favorite NBA player, but as long as he’s wearing a Knicks uniform I’m going to root for him and hope he does really well.

I do think we need to make at least a small move to give us some roster balance. The only center we have is Turiaf and he can’t even consistantly play 20 minutes a night and the only PF we have besides Amare is Sheldon Williams and he is a terrible offensive player who is a 10th, 11th man at best. Another big man, that is better than d-league fodder would make me feel alot better.

    Go Knicks.

Definitely, I hope the Knicks win 60 games next year and Melo wins MVP. By next week I’ll be fine with Melo, I’ll never be a fan of Melo but as long as he’s a Knick he’s got my full support.

  28. jon abbey

I’ve never been a big fan of Melo either, but I am curious to see how he reacts to the pressure he’s put on himself with this forced trade.

one thing I was glad to see is that Billups seemed to be in pretty good spirits, since we all know he’s a Denver boy, born and raised, and we need him to be huge if this team is going to hold on to the #6 spot.

  29. bommmbo

    Hey

I’m a parisian fan of the Knicks and of this blog. I learn lots of stuff and waste a lot of time thanks to you all.

I didn’t like the trade. Our two stars are poor team players and defenders, so i hope that it will at least be fun because we’re never going to win it all with those two.

I’d rather have watched Gallo and the others grow together, with a slim chance of winning one day, with good management from Walsh.

I’ve got two teams in my heart. The Psg is doing great in the french soccer league this year and the Knicks are kindda back to. So i’m just going to enjoy the rest of the season (starting with tonight thx to leaguepass) and keep reading this blog.

    Two questions :

I don’t understand stats geek site enough because of my poor english but i was wondering about Melo abilities in the PnR. I don’t recall him being much involved in that kind of plays or being very efficient. So first am i wrong ?

And if not, do you think it could make both, stat and him, better by playing of each other on pnr ?

Why do you call Shawne Williams Extra-E ?

And why the Tyler Durden thing TDWWDWW for Toney ?

    In order of difficulty:

    1. Extra E because the “E” at the end of Shawne is unnecessary.
    2. Tony Douglas, as a rookie I believe, once said something along the lines of “I’m just gonna do what Tony Douglas do” – which, when he’s doing it, is awesome. So it TDDWTDD, (right?) Tony Douglas Do What Tony Douglas Do.

I think Hat Tip to Posting and Toasting on both of those.

    3. Can’t find the article now, but I believe that Melo did really well when the PnR was run in Denver, they just rarely ran it. The question is, was that because Melo is stubborn and only likes isos, or is it a coaching flaw.

The answer could very well determine the fate of the knicks!

Bienvenue, mon gros! We call Shawne Williams “Extra E” because the normal spelling of “Shawn” doesn’t have that “e” at the end.

TDDWTDD is an acronym – during an interview after he was drafted, a reporter asked him what his best skills were and Toney responded. “Toney Douglas do what Toney Douglas do” describing himself in the third person. So from the above statement, you get “TDDWTDD”

Et finalment,J’adore Paris. C’est ma deuxième ville préférée dans le monde

  32. BigBlueAL

According to D’Antoni no surprise that for now the main 3 guys off the bench will be TD, Extra E and Walker. Curious to see which if any of the extra new players finds their way into the rotation.

  33. Brian Cronin

It is hilariously ridiculous that D’Antoni foresees a scenario where Mason will get minutes, but not Balkman.

  34. BigBlueAL

To be honest Im not sure if Balkman is 100% healthy. Of course George Karl didnt bother giving him minutes when he was healthy either.

  35. Ben R

That’s garbage, I really want Balkman to get some minutes. He’s probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite player on the Knicks now. (Under Fields, tied with Douglas and Turiaf) He is our best defender and great on the break and supposedly D’Antoni likes undersized bigs and that is exactly what he is.

  36. bommmbo

    Nice,

After what was my first post, i was refreshing the page very often, so thx for the quicks answers. I had a good laugh once again. I like toney but i think he’s kind of crazy, not the artest kind, more the “on another planet kind”; not sure he’ll ever be able to play PG.

I’ll be coming to ny in the spring but it we’ll be to late for the Knicks (start of june). Do you have any adresses for a nice playground. I’m not looking for high level, just for a good place. any ideas ?

for the french speaking people :

J’annonce une victoire ce soir 99-88 avec un gros match de Melo. Fin de saison à la sixième place et élimination au deuxième tour par Miami genre 4-1.

  37. BigBlueAL

From what Ive read Brewer is probably the best Knick defender now. Although unfortunately he is as bad offensively as Balkman.

  38. Brian Cronin

Yeah, good point. I swear, his treatment by Denver is more bizarre than New York’s handling of AR. They gave him a three year extension, but then proceed to never ever play him. So odd.

  39. Brian Cronin

I think as a 4 he loses a lot of his luster (sorta like Extra E).

Yeah, I think Brewer and Douglas are both better defenders than 2011 Balkman. 2007 Balkman might have been a different story, but not 2011 Balkman.

  41. JK47

It’s weird, three of the dudes we acquired would seem to be valuable niche guys for us– Brewer for his wing defense, Shelden Williams for his rebounding and Balkman for his combination of those two attributes. Yet somehow you wonder if any of these guys will ever get any PT.

But then again the next time Ronny Turiaf sneezes he’ll get hurt, so I suppose that’ll force D’Antoni’s hand.

  42. DS

@55 – Where do you see that?

I see Gerald Wallace for Andre Miller and Camby(?) is almost done. That could make the ‘Cats a tough #8.

  43. DS

    ESPN Roundup on ‘Melo:

    5. Who will be New York’s starting PG in 2012-13?
    Abbott: Chris Paul.

    Adande: Chris Paul.

Begley: Chris Paul. Walsh insists that the new CBA — whenever it’s signed — will not affect the Knicks’ ability to go after a free agent in the summer of 2012.

Hollinger: Toney Douglas. Knicks don’t have the cap room to get CP or Deron Williams and no longer have the assets to trade for one of them.

Sheridan: Since they didn’t get the rights to Ricky Rubio in this recent three-way trade, and since I am unconvinced they will have enough flexibility under the new labor rules to make a max offer to Williams or Paul, I will go the safest route possible and say it’ll be Toney Douglas, who will have four years of NBA experience under his belt by then.

Stein: Chris Paul is the more likely free-agent signee than Deron Williams on this scorecard. They will try to trade for Steve Nash and Ricky Rubio, too. But if the new labor agreement makes it impossible to afford a lead guard of that caliber, New York is going to have issues, because the two hardest positions to fill in this game remain unfilled after this Melo blockbuster.

Thorpe: Ricky Rubio, who will be very good in time, and cheap enough to acquire. D-Will and CP3 will just be too expensive.

Zwerling: Chris Paul. That toast at Melo and LaLa Vasquez’s wedding is all coming together now. In 2012, the “Big Apple Big Three” will be debuting on Broadway.

  44. Ben R

So the Nets-Warriors trade hasn’t gone through yet. Supposedly the Warriors are interested in Nate and Boston in Brewer. Why not a three way trade:

    Brewer to Boston
    Nate to GS
    Wright to NY

Steal a player out from under NJ and get a cheap, young big to help us out.

Yeah, that’d work. I’d prefer they focus on size, though.

  46. Ben R

Brandon wright – 6’9″ PF – Career 15.9 pts 8.5 rebs 2.0 blks per 36 in over 1200 minutes with a career 57.8% TS%. GS doesn’t want him and is thinking of moving him and Gadzuric’s expiring contract to NJ for Murphy, whom they will buy out, and a 2nd round pick.

I think if they truly want Nate he is more valuable than a 2nd round pick.

  47. Brian Cronin

    Ha, Ben!

You know what I think I did? I think I confused Brandon Wright (who I knew Golden State had basically benched) with Dorrell Wright’s OLD numbers (before he got good) so I was thinking he was a 3. So yeah, Wright would make sense. What I don’t get is who does Boston plan on playing the point? Pierce as a sort of point forward? Do they like Barkley that much?

  48. daJudge

Ben R–Grab a beer or two and watch the Knicks tonight. If you’re still sad at the half, play some Hank Williams (Junior, if you must), drink another beer, or two, and then put the damn game back on. If you’re still down, just keep repeating CP3 over and over and, of course, drink another beer. Just some friendly advice from a fan who lived through Clyde’s exile. Go Knicks.

  49. Ben R

I’ve actually got a rehearsal tonight, I’m headed out right now, but I decided last minute to record the game. I will grab some beer and watch the game when I get back. FWIW – Hank Sr over Jr any day of the week.

  50. jon abbey

thank you for beating me to this, it’s like comparing Amare to Jackie Butler.
